These creators won Aurora Awards, which recognize Canadian sci-fi and fantasy writing
Social Sharing Canadian creators of science fiction, fantasy and horror were honoured at the annual Aurora Awards on Aug. 10. The awards are given out by the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association (CSFFA). They celebrate Canadian science fiction and fantasy writing across 10 categories, including fiction, YA, poetry, comics, illustration and fan writing. Members of the association nominate the authors, poets and other artists for the various prizes, and then vote on the winners. Edmonton writer Premee Mohamed took home the award for best novel with The Siege of Burning Grass, which tells the story of two empires — Varkal and Med'ariz — that have always been at war, and the imprisoned pacifist resistance founder who must make difficult choices to try and stop the fighting. She also nabbed the award for best novelette or novella with The Butcher of the Forest. Mohamed is an Indo-Caribbean scientist and speculative fiction writer. Her series Beneath the Rising received nominations for the Crawford Award, British Fantasy Awards, Locus Awards and Aurora Awards. The Siege of Burning Grass was also shortlisted for the prestigious Ursula K. Le Guin Prize, a prize named after the iconic science fiction writer for the best work of "imaginative" fiction. Her book The Annual Migration of Clouds won the 2022 Aurora Award for best novella. The award for best young adult novel went to Vancouver-based author and YouTuber Xiran Jay Zhao for their fantasy title, Heavenly Tyrant, which is a sequel to their debut novel Iron Widow. In Heavenly Tyrant, Zetian finds herself on the seat of power in Huaxia. But when an enemy dangles one of her loved ones as a hostage, Zetian is forced to share power with a dangerous man in order to take down their common enemy and stoke a revolution against the systems of exploitation that plague their world. Zhao is a first-generation Chinese immigrant who is passionate about Chinese history, cosplay and anime. Iron Widow, a YA fantasy featuring aliens, giant robots and a quest to battle evil, was a New York Times bestseller. The other Aurora Awards went to: WATCH | The 2025 Aurora Awards ceremony:
