Kochi: The Union govt on Friday sought two more weeks to inform the high court its decision on the matter of loan waivers for the victims of the landslides at Chooralmala and Mundakkai in Wayanad on July 30, 2024.
Assistant solicitor general ARL Sundaresan made the submission in response to the suo motu petition concerning the rehabilitation of the Wayanad landslide victims. He added that deliberations on the matter are ongoing between the ministries concerned. Accordingly, the court adjourned the petition to July 25 for further hearing.
Additionally, advocate Renjith Thampan, the amicus curiae, suggested that a report be called from the state govt regarding the utilisation of the Rs 120cr from the state disaster response fund (SDRF), which had been permitted by the bench earlier in March 2025 for the rehabilitation works in Wayanad.
Advocate general K Gopalakrishna Kurup, in response, informed the court that the report in that regard can be furnished on the next posting date.
The state disaster management authority also placed before the court videos and photographs showing the removal of debris from the disaster-affected areas in Wayanad.
The AG further informed the court that environmental clearance from the ministry of environment, forests and climate change (MoEFCC) for the proposed four-lane tunnel corridor from Kozhikode to Wayanad was granted on June 17, and that a detailed project report has also been prepared.
The Court instructed the AG to produce the report and share a copy with the amicus curiae. The court also directed the amicus curiae to review the report and assess its feasibility.

Recovery cell to be set up in Revenue dept for builder dues under RERA

In a major move to safeguard the interests of homebuyers, the Karnataka Real Estate Regulatory Authority (K-RERA) has proposed the creation of a dedicated Recovery Cell within the Revenue Department to recover over Rs 650 crore in pending dues from builders who have violated RERA norms. The decision comes amid growing criticism that K-RERA has failed to enforce its own orders against builders who have not delivered flats on time or violated other regula-tory conditions. Despite issuing Revenue Recovery Certificates (RRCs), several builders have continued to ignore the directives, prompting the need for a more fo-cused mechanism for enforcement. Currently, the task of enforcing RRCs lies with district collectors and tahsildars. How-ever, their existing administrative burden—including handling elections, census du-ties, and national events—has resulted in minimal focus on recovering these amounts. According to officials, just 62 out of 565 RRC cases have resulted in actual recovery, amounting to only Rs 18.7 crore, while the remaining 594 cases involve a backlog of Rs 347.44 crore yet to be 10 major builders account for nearly Rs 347 crore in unpaid penalties. Among them, Ozone Urbana Infra Developers Pvt. Ltd. leads the list with Rs 201 crore pending across 229 cases, of which only Rs 7.53 crore has been recovered so far. The idea for the Recovery Cell was supported by a proposal submitted by Forum for People's Collective Efforts (FPCE), a citizens' rights group advocating for strict im-plementation of RERA provisions. Welcoming the move, National General Secretary of FPCE, MS Shankar said, 'We commend the decision to consider setting up a ded-icated recovery cell to handle builder defaults under RERA. If implemented, Karna-taka will become the second state in the country to have such a system.' The new cell is expected to ensure swifter enforcement of K-RERA's compensation orders, prevent fraudulent practices by errant builders, and offer long-overdue relief to affected homebuyers. The formal proposal has now been submitted to the state gov-ernment, and discussions are underway to operationalize the cell in the coming months.

BJP leader accuses CM of spreading fake news on Covid-19 vaccines

Bengaluru: BJP MP Lahar Singh Siroya on Friday accused Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of spreading fake news with his recent remarks linking Covid-19 vaccines with a spate of heart attack deaths in the state's Hassan district, saying there is no vaccine against 'dissident' activities. The CM has suggested that the recent heart attack deaths in Hassan district may be linked to the vaccination drive. He also claimed the vaccines were 'hastily' approved. Taking a dig at Siddaramaiah, the BJP MP said that the Karnataka government has been speaking about tough legislation, including a seven-year jail term and fine, against the promotion and spread of fake news. 'At the rate at which Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has been speaking, I think someone will register the first complaint against him for spreading #fakenews on #Covid vaccines. The Union government has already clarified on this issue,' he said in a post on 'X'. According to him, the Congress' effort is to demoralise the scientific community, which saved millions of lives during the pandemic. 'I hope someone in the Congress cautions him (Siddaramaiah). Perhaps there is nobody left to caution him because nobody in his own High Command or locally think his government will survive for long. There is no vaccine against dissident activities,' Siroya said in the post.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Dalai Lama will turn 90 on Sunday. He resides at the Tsuglagkhang, the main Tibetan temple in Dharamshala. Rijiju's visit to greet the spiritual leader comes a day after China asked India to handle Tibet-related issues with "caution," saying this could affect efforts to improve bilateral relations. These remarks by a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson followed Rijiju's statement that the Dalai Lama's "reincarnation" should be decided "according to his own wishes." The Union minister's statement was in response to the Chinese asserting earlier this week that the selection process for the spiritual leader's successor should be through a process "approved" by Beijing. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday that India did not have "any position" on the process of selecting the next Dalai Lama. "We have seen reports about His Holiness the Dalai Lama's statement on the continuation of the Dalai Lama institution. The Government of India does not take any position or speak on matters concerning beliefs and practices of faith and religion. The government has always upheld freedom of religion for all in India and will continue to do so," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters at a media briefing in New Delhi. The current Dalai Lama recently said that his successor would be chosen by the India-based Gaden Phodrang Trust — a non-profit organisation he set up — and not by any other authority. This statement was seen as a message to China.
