Miles McBride provides Knicks another jolt in Game 6 — on both ends
At 6-foot-1, Miles McBride is not exactly known as a rim protector.
Yet with just over five minutes left in the second quarter, there was McBride chasing down Derrick White on a fast break and emphatically blocking his shot off the backboard.
Josh Hart corralled the rebound, raced down the other end of the floor and got an and-one. It sent the raucous Madison Square Garden crowd into a tizzy.

Then, a few minutes later, McBride's 3-pointer with less than a second left in the quarter sent the Knicks into the halftime break up 64-37 and had the crowd at full voice.
He finished the Knicks' 119-81 Game 6 win over the Celtics — to close out the series — with 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting.

After a rough first-round series against the Pistons, McBride responded with a terrific second round.
And he seems to keep getting better — and more confident — the further the Knicks go.

'He doesn't shoot well every game,' coach Tom Thibodeau said. 'Nobody does. Just keep playing, trust your game, the work you put in. Defensively, the ball pressure is terrific. He plays fast and you can go on runs with him. And be a catalyst. That's what he does for us. Picks up full-court. If you're open, shoot. If you're guarded well, make a play for somebody else.'

The Knicks depth has been a weakness all year, and Thibodeau has narrowed his rotation down to seven players in recent games.
Mitchell Robinson's defense and rebounding off the bench are critical, but McBride represents their only reserve who can provide a scoring punch and spark.

And Friday night, he outplayed the best bench scorer in the league in Payton Pritchard, who won the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award.
McBride is one of the Knicks' quickest players.
When he is on the floor, the Knicks often play faster and are more aggressive in transition.
Nobody plays faster than the Pacers, the Knicks' opponent in the Eastern Conference finals.
McBride's role will only grow more important.

Report: New York to ask Dallas for permission to talk to Jason Kidd about becoming head coach
The New York Knicks — searching for a new coach after the firing of Tom Thibodeau, who led them to the Eastern Conference Finals — are expected to ask permission of the Dallas Mavericks to talk to Jason Kidd about coming to Manhattan, reports Marc Stein of The Stein Line in his latest Substack missive. 'The New York Knicks are expected to formally request permission to speak to the Dallas Mavericks' Jason Kidd about their coaching vacancy in coming days, league sources say... A precise hierarchy of potential Knicks targets to replace Thibodeau has yet to emerge, but some in league coaching circles believe that Kidd... is at the top of New York's wish list.' Kidd coached Brunson for a year in Dallas, and the two had a good relationship (Brunson's issues in Dallas were about his next contract and feeling lowballed and disrespected, not the coaching). Two big questions emerge here. First, would Dallas give permission for New York to talk to Kidd? Mavs ownership/management can say no, which is reportedly what Houston would do if New York called about Ime Udoka (Stein wrote that the Knicks would like Udoka, but knows they would be turned down if they asked). As a standard practice, if the coach is open to it, teams will let their coach have those conversations with another team, but if things get serious and the coach wants to move on then draft compensation has to come back to the coach's current team (and the Knicks are not flush with draft picks to send to Dallas). Kidd signed an extension with Dallas that runs through 2027 and by all accounts is happy there, Stein reports. Second, would Kidd want the job? ESPN's Tim MacMahon said on the outlet's 'Hoop Collective' podcast that Kidd's 'ears would perk up' at the idea, adding that the Knicks need to bring in a 'relationship guy' and Kidd fits that bill. 'Listen, one of the names that's been thrown out there is a man who's under contract with another team, but definitely a guy who has relationships not just with Jalen Brunson but with a lot of people in that organization, and that's Jason Kidd. And what I will say about that is I would not dismiss that possibility.' Kidd was hired to be the Mavericks' coach by former owner Mark Cuban. In the wake of the ownership change and the Luka Doncic trade, would he want out? Dallas still has talent on the roster, including Kyrie Irving (out for most or all of next season with a torn ACL), Anthony Davis, and incoming No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg, as well as solid players such as P.J. Washington, Naji Marshall, and others. If the Knicks can't get Kidd or Udoka, where do they turn next? They reportedly want an experienced head coach, which would rule out former assistant Johnnie Bryant (who is now in Cleveland and was a finalist for the Suns job). Michael Malone is out there, but he is seen as similar to Thibodeau in leaning too heavily into his starters and being set in his ways. Former Cavaliers, Lakers and most recently Kings coach Mike Brown is available, he is a defense-first guy, but is he an upgrade over Thibodeau that takes them to the next level? The Knicks moved on from Thibodeau without a replacement lined up, which could make this search messy.

The Knicks are considering a Hall of Fame name with organizational ties in their coaching search after the firing of Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks will 'formally ask for permission…in the coming days' to speak with current Mavericks coach Jason Kidd about their vacancy, according to a report Friday by longtime NBA writer Mark Stein on his Substack account. Kidd, who played the final season of his NBA career with the Knicks during their 54-win campaign under Mike Woodson in 2012-13, led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals one year ago. Kidd's first year at the helm with the Mavs also marked the final season for Jalen Brunson in Dallas, and they developed a strong relationship before Brunson became a two-time All-Star point guard after signing with the Knicks as a free agent in 2022. The trade would bring Nikola Vucevic to the Warriors. Bailey's trade proposal sees Vucevic, the No. 45 overall pick, and a 2028 second-round pick heading to Golden State in exchange for Moses Moody and Buddy Hield. In this trade idea, the Warriors would be given up quality back-court depth. Both Moody and Hield played key roles for Golden State during the 2024-25 NBA season. However, the move to acquire a huge center upgrade in Vucevic might be worth it. During the 2024-25 NBA season with the Bulls, Vucevic played in 73 games for Chicago. He averaged 18.5 points per game to go along with 10.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists, while shooting 53 percent from the floor and 40.2 percent from three-point range. Vucevic is not a good defensive presence, which is something the Warriors need as well. But, his scoring ability, especially with his three-point shooting, would fit Golden State's offense perfectly. He would also bring top-tier rebounding to the court. Hield, on the other hand, scored 11.1 points per game to go along with 3.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists. This is just an idea at this point. There is no guarantee that the Warriors will have any interest in a trade for Vucevic. He would be an upgrade at center, but would not check every box Golden State needs. Expect to see the Warriors mentioned heavily in the NBA rumor mill this offseason. They will likely be aggressive as they search to pursue another ring with Curry still leading the way.
