UK's top 20 'forgotten' baby names going out of fashion
While baby names often ebb and flow in popularity, recent years have marked a distinct shift away from some contemporary or trend-led choices. Baby name fashions wax and wane, with modern and retro selections frequently fluctuating in favour.
As ageless classics make a comeback, it seems other once-fashionable baby names are subtly falling out of vogue. This is according to the life insurance team at Compare the Market, who scrutinised name trends from 2013 to 2023 using data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to reveal the UK's most dwindling names.
The research indicates that some formerly popular baby names are now swiftly losing their appeal. For boys, Leland has experienced the sharpest drop, plummeting by 96%, followed by Tyler-James at 95% and Patryk at 92%.
Among girls, Alexa has seen the greatest decrease, down by 97%, possibly due to its link with Amazon's voice assistant. Kaitlin is hot on its heels, having dropped by more than 96%.
In terms of traditional baby names, Maeve, has witnessed a remarkable 1,854% surge in usage. Of Irish origin, Maeve leapt from 57 babies named Maeve in 2013 to a whopping 1,114 in 2023, reports the Express.
It was closely trailed by the similar name Margot, which enjoyed a 1,764% rise. Ezra and Nellie rank third, having increased by 791% and 1,084% respectively.
The name Atlas, of Greek origin and mythological significance, has seen a staggering increase of 1,775% – from just 12 boys named Atlas in 2013 to 225 in 2023. Chester follows closely with an 856% surge.

James Norton breaks silence on return to Grantchester for final series
James Norton breaks silence on return to Grantchester for final series EXCLUSIVE: Grantchester will be coming to an end after 11 series and now James Norton has addressed whether he will be returning to the show James Norton addresses Grantchester return as he's spotted on set of final series (Image: ITV) Following 11 series, ITV announced that Grantchester would be drawing to a close, six years after James Norton departed from his role as Sidney Chambers. Whilst James was succeeded by another actor, viewers have continuously hoped for his comeback, and with production for the final series currently taking place, many were delighted when the star was photographed on location. He was spotted chatting with cast and crew members, instantly sparking speculation that the beloved Sidney had returned. Nevertheless, in conversation with Reach Plc, James explained those photographs and confirmed it was merely a "social visit". He revealed: "No, I went to visit Robson because it was a series 11. I wanted to just say hello because I knew that the show was going to finish. "I had a lunch with Daisy [Coulam], the writer, about a few weeks previous and she said, 'I'm going down on Monday. You should come with me to say hello.'". Article continues below "So that's all I did, I went to say hello and of course, we got papped. But no, no, no, no. It was just a social visit." James Norton stars as Harold Wessex and serves as executive producer Whilst supporters may feel let down that he won't be returning to Grantchester, James will be appearing on television screens this week as he takes on the character of Harold of Wessex in King and Conqueror. The BBC period drama follows the circumstances leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and features James as executive producer, reports the Mirror. Discussing his motivation for concentrating on this particular era, James explained: "Initially when Mike Johnson, the writer, brought this idea to us, it was seven years ago. We couldn't believe no one had told this story before. "Not only because it's this massive event and underpins so much of our politics, and art and legal systems - the repercussions of that event, we still feel today - but also because when you delve beyond the the actual date and go back a bit you realise that there is this incredibly twisty, turny thriller ride between these two men and their families." He added: "Mike Johnson's stroke of genius was focusing not on either individual but actually their relationship and and and mining the fact - the truth - that they were friends. James will be back on TV screens this week when he takes the role of Harold of Wessex "They they met at the Confessor's coronation. William asked Harold to come to Normandy to fight against the Baron of Brittany. Harold swore to recognise William's claim to be the rightful King of England over the relics, over the saints' relics. So all of that is true. Article continues below "When you read it, you're like, how on earth? This is such a brilliant story to find, with these two men friends turned adversaries on a battlefield and knowing that one of them had to die. So the first reaction was like 'Wow this is such a brilliant story. Why has no one told this before?'". As the series prepares to launch on the BBC, James revealed it's "really humbling" to witness the enormous effort required to create a production of this scale, and now, seven years since initially learning about the concept, it feels "very scary". "I don't think I've ever put so much time into one project in my life so the stakes are massively high and it will be it's very scary to sort of release something which has taken so much time, blood, sweat, and tears," he remarked. "But also I more proud of this than I have ever been proud of, you know, anything I've ever made. So I can't wait to share it. Hopefully people will love it. And if they don't, they can just lie to me."

Inbetweeners fans convinced reboot of iconic E4 comedy is happening
Fans of the Inbetweeners are convinced that a revival could be on the cards after two of its stars shared a cryptic post onto Instagram this week Fans of The Inbetweeners have been left totally convinced that a reunion is on the cards. The E4 comedy originally aired over the course of three series from 2008 until 2010 and also spawned two films that came out in 2011 and 2014 but fresh hope has been sparked that more could be on the way. The series followed Joe Thomas, James Buckley, Simon Bird and Blake Harrison as four sixth formers and ran for a total of 18 episodes. But when Joe, who played Simon Cooper, and James, who shot to fame as Jay Cartwright, shared a cryptic Instagram post, fans got excited. In the photos posted onto the social media platform, Joe and James stood beside each other for a photoshoot. The pair did not give anything away, and James captioned the post: "Working on something..." It comes after Channel 4 breaks silence after Gogglebox couple suddenly dumped from show. One fan asked: "Inbetweeners 3?" whilst another listed their wishes should a reunion come about as they wrote: "We need an inbetweeners reunion. Set 10/15 years later. Jay gets married and carnage ensues. American Pioe reunion showed that it can be done well," and finished their comment off with a fingers crossed emoji. A third fan simply wrote: "Inbetweeners 3, we waiting," and another joked: "Where are the other two melons?" A fifth fan said: "We definitely do need more inbetweeners. For those that don't agree, just pretended that it finished when it did. Don't have to watch anything new if you don't agree!" Since The Inbetweeners ended, the boys have continued to be active in the industry in one way or another. Joe joined the cast of Fresh Meat in 2011, and then joined James in the sitcom White Gold. Simon, since leaving his alter-ego of straight-laced Will behind, has starred in Friday Night Dinner and has since turned to directing as he helmed the BBC sitcom Such Brave Girls. Blake, who become known to audiences as the dopey Neil, has made numerous appearances in TV staples like Doctor Who and Death In Paradise amongst a host of others, and starred as the on-screen nephew of Brenda Blethyn in Kate & Koji from 2020 until 2022. What's more, James has carved out a second career on social media with his wife Clair as they host the YouTube series At Home with the Buckleys, and he has made a reported £1 million from his profile on the celebrity greetings website Cameo. And last year, James, who has sons Harrison, 14, and 12-year-old Jude with Clair, admitted that signing on to star in the role that made him famous once again would be the best thing he could for his bank balance. He told OK!: "It's no secret that would be the most profitable thing I could go into right now. "I do have children, I do have a family, I do have bills, and sometimes you've got to take that into consideration, just as a practical thing, a boring, dull, provider of a family thing. "All that stuff I do think about and what's great is I know, if four of us boys get together — and [writers] Iain Morris and Damon — and we all have a little chat and we said 'Shall we go again?' I know it would be greenlit straight away!"
