Sojo Industries raises $40M to automate food manufacturing and grow operations

Sojo Industries announced today a $40 million Series B investment, building on the company's recent growth momentum.
The Bristol-based robotics company uses both hardware and software to automate food and beverage manufacturing systems. The recent funding from investment firm S2G will be used to upgrade its software products, invest in marketing materials and advance its 'mobile manufacturing' technology, Barak Bar-Cohen, founder and CEO of Sojo, told Technical.ly.
'Having this vote of confidence from S2G, having this capital on the balance sheet, having smart, experienced partners alongside you,' Bar-Cohen said, 'feels like another major advantage to have at this point in time.'
Only four years old, the company has raised about $63 million to date and currently employs 100 people. The key to Sojo's growth has been staying focused on its original vision and model, which is building a tech company rooted in flexible manufacturing and product tracking technology, according to Bar-Cohen.
As it continues to grow, Sojo plans to build out a customer-centric team and further improve its technology, he said.
'Really staying an inch wide in who you are and what you do,' he said, 'but trying to develop a model that's a mile deep and scales profitably.'
The 2024 RealLIST Startup will also use the money to expand its marketing capabilities and its 'Atoms to Bits' platform, which encompasses its two main software products: Sojo Shield, a tool that tracks products in the supply chain, and Sojo Flight.
Flight, patented late last year, licenses Sojo's manufacturing services to similar facilities. Now, the goal is to build more 'rovers,' which are platforms with robotics and conveyors attached to them that can be moved around and connected easily inside third-party facilities.
The company currently has eight sites using the Sojo Flight system, with the goal of increasing that number to 20 by early next year, Bar-Cohen said. It will need additional units to meet demand, as some of Sojo's contracts with large manufacturers and brands require significant volumes of the tools, and some of the funding will help with that.
As a part of its growth, Sojo is also investing in its physical sites.
Sojo has manufacturing and packaging facilities in Pennsylvania, California, Texas and Indiana. Some of the money will go towards enhancing those locations by adding more technology and robotics, according to Bar-Cohen.
Overcoming a challenging fundraising environment
Six months ago, Sojo decided to pursue a Series B round to keep up with growing demand for its products, according to Bar-Cohen.
Last summer, Sojo raised a $10 million Series A. As of October 2024, Sojo Industries was valued at $80 million, according to PitchBook, but the company did not disclose an updated valuation with its current raise.
Raising money is difficult right now, specifically because of macroeconomic uncertainty. Venture capital deal flow in the Philadelphia region was way down last quarter, according to PitchBook's quarterly Venture Monitor report.
Part of the reason the fundraising atmosphere is so challenging is that founders need to show profitable growth at scale, a plan to get there and a strong team to execute it, Bar-Cohen said. The goal is to use this recent raise in a way that will result in 12 to 18-month payback periods.
The company was founded in 2021 by Bar-Cohen, a former beverage company executive, with a specific focus on using robotics and automation to package variety packs of food and beverages.
Originally, Sojo was mostly focused on beverage manufacturing and packaging, but it's now solidly in food and snacks with plans to expand into the pet food, health and beauty markets, Bar-Cohen said.
'If you just focus on the things that you're really, really good at, over and over again,' Bar-Cohen said, 'and you do it well, and you sort of let that permeate across the business and that execution operator mindset — that's as much of a competitive advantage out there as anything.'

Duolingo clarifies AI, acquisition and workforce strategy following viral internal memo

Duolingo is continuing to explore AI-related partnerships to improve its curriculum, despite backlash from a recent announcement. But there's way more to the unicorn language learning app's strategy for growth than just that, senior strategist Sisi Liu told at Innovation Works' Venture Expo on Tuesday. One key tenet is buying up other companies. A recent string of acquisitions highlights the company's approach: It brings in tech and talent that's better than what it could efficiently develop in-house, according to Liu. 'It's not like anything has materially changed about the facts of the world,' Liu told 'There's really, really cool innovations happening around foundation models, and around what that can mean for creating better education products. So, I think our stance on that is full steam ahead on finding really top-tier companies that can help bring new features to Duolingo.' The recent fireside chat follows a wave of backlash after the company's CEO, Luis von Ahn, said in April that it would shift to an 'AI-first' organization. The original announcement by von Ahn included reducing human contractors if AI could perform their duties, but he has since clarified that AI will not replace human workers at Duolingo. 'It's about creating access to learning experiences that don't necessarily already exist for a lot of people,' Liu said. 'It's not saying, 'Hey, you'll replace one for one the foreign language teacher you have, or the tutor that you work with on a weekly basis, or whatever to practice language learning.' It's a supplemental experience on top of that.' It's all a part of what the edtech company calls its 'Green Machine,' Liu said. Duolingo emphasizes building long-term relationships as it seeks out new partners to purchase and targets specific gaps in its own infrastructure to fill. Build relationships early to improve your chances of selling An important part of Duolingo's model is the design of its product. Its characters and their respective animations are an essential part of its success, according to Liu. But a significant hurdle around 2022, Liu said, was finding the workforce to build those animations. 'We just were totally blocked in terms of bringing great product screens to learners, because we didn't have enough designers,' Liu said. 'We didn't have enough animators, artists [or] illustrators; our animation team was one person at that point.' Because the company knew good design was a cornerstone of its product, Liu said it 'doubled down' on finding the best team to do it, part of the company's 'Green Machine' strategy for growth. Duolingo acquired two Detroit-based animation studios — Gunner in 2022 and Hobbs in 2024 — after long-running partnerships with both. Duolingo prefers to prove startups' mettle before bringing them in-house, Liu said. 'Most of the time we're not acquiring these companies to run this business, but rather to join Duolingo,' Liu said, 'and in one fell swoop, add 10, 15 of the best people doing this in the best way in the world. That's really hard to do through traditional channels like hiring.' Duolingo acquires when in-house builds seem inefficient Expansions on its curriculum, like those into music and math, would have taken much longer to roll out without the help of startups, according to Liu. For example, the technology necessary to support new lessons, like pitch detection, could've taken years for the company's team to build. UberChord, a Berlin-based startup that had already been partnered with Duolingo for some time, turned out to be the answer. The existing relationship, coupled with Duolingo's emerging needs, created a clear opportunity for acquisition, Liu said. 'We saw, like, 'Hey, there's something promising here,'' Liu said. 'But bringing [UberChord] in-house would allow us to develop faster, and then they would stop being distracted by basically selling B2B software to other folks that need their pitch detection [software development kit].' Although this is a cornerstone of Duolingo's model, Liu said some partnerships aren't always feasible. AI-image generators and game development studios are two examples she listed where Duolingo recognized that moving forward with an acquisition was not rational. In these cases, the company embraces a 'quick sprint' technique to assess what works and does not work about potential startups. 'Because our needs are changing so fast,' Liu said, 'it does not make sense to tie ourselves down with an acquisition or investment.'

How local governments can back the entrepreneurs building their regions' futures

Entrepreneurship is increasingly viewed as the most dependable source of broad-based economic gains. Nearly all net new jobs come from new companies and a 1% rise in entrepreneurial activity correlates with a 2% decline in poverty. Post-pandemic growth — led by women, particularly women of color — shows investments in 'inclusive entrepreneurship' worked, but systemic barriers to capital, networks and opportunity still limit would-be founders. A policy 'field guide' recommends redirecting 5% of procurement to firms under five years old, eliminating early registration fees, reforming noncompetes, strengthening libraries as entrepreneurial hubs, designating a clear entrepreneurship leader and elevating existing ecosystem efforts rather than duplicating them. Entrepreneurship can sound like rich people's problems. In certain settings, talking about business starts and business growth all sounds like the cavorting of the well to do. A growing coalition says that's all wrong. 'Entrepreneurship is not just about starting companies,' said Victor Hwang. 'It's about enabling people to solve problems in their communities with innovation and drive.' Hwang refined his bookish charm and pro-entrepreneurship pitch while an executive at the Kansas City-based Kauffman Foundation, which is widely credited for advancing the research and the field of new-business support. This work now gets called ecosystem building, or place-based, entrepreneur-led economic development. Hwang's policy-focused Right to Start nonprofit has just kicked off a national campaign called America the Entrepreneurial, to put entrepreneurs at the center of next year's 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Hwang is also among my co-hosts of Builders Live, a monthly podcast on ecosystem building. Ahead of the Global Entrepreneurship Congress, in our most recent episode, alongside investor Brian Brackeen, we checked in on the most surefire policies Right to Start recommends for state and local officials. Entrepreneurship is not a distraction from well-rounded and inclusive economic policy. It's increasingly recognized as the most dependable source of gains, including the following: Nearly all net new jobs come from new companies Every 1% increase in entrepreneurial activity in a county correlates with a 2% decline in poverty — and average household income increased by $500 41% of Americans say they'd launch a business if they could, but just 2% actually do One key input of economic mobility is access to information about the programs and resources (a role we at Technically play) Investments into what has been called 'inclusive entrepreneurship' in the 2000s and 2010s worked. Entrepreneurship has popped post-pandemic, led by women, especially women of color, but barriers remain. 'The reason I founded Right to Start was to change the narrative and the policies that limit entrepreneurship in this country,' Hwang said. A checklist for policymakers to support entrepreneurship Though more is to come, his Right to Start launched ' field guides ' for policymakers, at the local, state and federal levels. A few of their most common recommendations, mixed with a couple from own reporting: 5% to start: 'Dedicate a small percentage of current funding to new entrepreneurs and young businesses, and track the impact…Redirect 5% of government procurement dollars to businesses under 5 years old.' Identify an entrepreneurship leader: This could be an existing lead (like a commerce director), provided they truly prioritize entrepreneurship. Zero barriers to launch: ' Reduce or eliminate registration costs and fees for new businesses in their critical early years,' relying financially on more established firms. Separate new business from small, medium and large businesses: They need different things, and it is the 'new' that create the most positive economic outcomes. Easy access: 'Strengthen local libraries as hubs of knowledge and digital tools for entrepreneurs.' Noncompete reform: 'Unleash entrepreneurs who want to create new jobs by freeing them from unfair bans and noncompete restrictions.' Support existing efforts: Most states and regions have existing 'ecosystem building' efforts. Rather than recreate them, elevate and redirect residents there. This mirrors advice we've given mayors in the past. To support entrepreneurship: Remove barriers, invest in workforce, celebrate homegrown solutions and amplify the priority. (We've made more general tech policy recommendations too) Entrepreneurs start alone, but don't grow without help Many of these steps are intentionally modest. Hwang, though, has a far more ambitious plan: for entrepreneurship to be at the very center of all economic policy. Brackeen, managing partner of Lightship Capital, echoed that idea. 'The barriers that exist for entrepreneurs, especially those from underrepresented communities, are systemic, and we need systemic change,' Brackeen said. 'It's not about handouts. It's about access — access to capital, access to networks and access to opportunity.' The best economic policy doesn't pick industries, it supports entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs don't pick places to start businesses, they pick places to live and then start businesses there. The ' Ecosystem Stack ' prioritizes both lifestyle issues (like housing) and amplifying these successes. This works. According to new analysis, regions with a dedicated news outlet covering startups earn 60% more media coverage and, over a decade, grow their ecosystems twice as fast as similar peers. The takeaway? Entrepreneurs may start alone, but their companies don't grow that way. Policy, platforms and narrative all shape what happens next. 'If we want more startups,' Hwang said, 'we need to fix the system so it doesn't favor big businesses at the expense of new ones.'
