Tom Daley reveals how much Olympic gold medallist divers REALLY get paid - and the amount will surprise you

Daily Mail5 days ago

Tom Daley has revealed how much money Olympic gold medallist divers actually get paid.
The retired diver, 31, shot to fame in 2008 when he competed at the Beijing Olympic Games aged just 14 years old.
Daley then became somewhat of a poster boy for the London Olympics in 2012 and came away with a bronze medal, before securing the gold medal eight years later at the 2020 Tokyo games.
But despite his status as the only British diver to secure five medals and soaring fame, Daley revealed the pay check for an Olympic diver is very minimal.
Speaking on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X on Thursday, Daley admitted that there are three tiers to diving salaries, with the top tier for those who win an Olympic medal - however this salary is as little as £27,000.

Host Moyles asked: 'We were talking this morning, and you don't need to get too much into detail if you don't want to, when you're part of Team GB in the sport you were in do you all get paid the same?
'Is it like a token thing like here's thirty-five quid a week or whatever it is?'
'Well, kind of but it depends on how good you are,' Daley replied. 'There are tiers so if you qualify for the major of the year then you get a certain amount and if you come in the top eight you get more.
'Then if you win an Olympic medal you get to the top tier which I think is twenty-seven a year.'
A shocked Moyles said: 'Twenty-seven grand a year? That's all you get for being a gold medallist? That's rubbish!'
Daley replied: 'Yeah, that's what you get. But then I'm really fortunate to have had the sponsors and that kind of stuff.
'But that's kind of part of the reason why you see athletes doing brand partnerships for that reason.'
Newsreader Dominic Byrne shared his opinion on the salary as he said: 'It's not a lot of money is it for being the best in the world at your sport.'
'It's not a lot of money at all,' Moyles added. 'Because you became famous fairly quickly, as in you were obviously diving since you were three years old or something crazy, but you've got all that fame, and you are earning twenty-seven grand a year.
'Which ain't shabby but you must have been the poorest famous person in Britain for a while.'
Daley went on to reveal that he didn't receive access to his diving money until he was 16 years old.
'I wasn't allowed it until I was sixteen either!' he said.
'But you know it's one of those things and doing it from a young age and you know I didn't ever do it for that and for me diving was always such a big part of my life and the last time I ever did a dive into a swimming pool was in the Olympics last year so it is a very big shift and change to now be retired.'
It comes days after Daley revealed he was once asked by a stranger if he needed help changing his son's nappy as he opened up about the assumed incompetence that male same-sex parents face.
Daley shares sons Phoenix, two, and Robbie Ray, six, with his screenwriter husband Dustin Lance Black, 50.
They met in 2013 and wed two years later before welcoming their little ones who were sweetly seen supporting Tom poolside at the Paris 2024 Olympics last year.
But in a new interview he has touched on how two dads often feel like they have to 'overachieve'.
He told The Times: 'When you're same-sex parents, you feel as though you have to, again, overachieve. Someone asked if I wanted them to change Robbie's nappy for me.
'You don't want people to judge you. Because it matters to us so much, and we really care that we're doing the best job that we can.'
In the interview he also spoke about first meeting Dustin, revealing that they named their future children on their first date and said 'I love you' on their second.
Before Dustin he had mostly dated women but never felt like he could 'fall in love' with them.
He said: 'I'd been with girls for a very long time and so I had felt as though, if I really wanted to, I could suppress [my sexuality].
'But after meeting Lance I was, like, oh maybe this 'conflicted' thing isn't just sexual. It was actually what my heart wanted as well.'
Listen to The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X weekdays from 06:30 – 10:00 and on Saturday from 08:00 - 11:00 across the UK and on Global Player.

England stunned by second retirement before Euros after Mary Earps announcement

Fran Kirby, 31, retires on the eve of the Lionesses' upcoming European Championship campaign – which begins in July – and finishes her career with 77 caps and 19 goals England midfielder Fran Kirby has announced her retirement from international football. It comes just a week after goalkeeper Mary Earps rocked England by hanging up her gloves from international football in a surprise announcement. Kirby, 31, retires on the eve of the Lionesses ' upcoming European Championship campaign – which begins in July – and finishes her career with 77 caps and 19 goals. Kirby made her senior debut in August 2014 against Sweden and went on to represent England at four major tournaments, as well as featuring for Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics. ‌ She claimed bronze at the 2015 World Cup and started in all of England's games at Euro 2022, scoring two goals along the way as the Lionesses lifted their first major trophy on home soil with victory over Germany in the final at Wembley. ‌ Her last outing for England came from the bench during their 6-0 win over Portugal on Friday and she announced her decision following the team's 2-1 defeat by Spain on Tuesday. 'After being in the England team since I was 21, it's time to close that chapter of my life,' Kirby wrote on social media. 'I didn't ever want this day to come, but I cannot tell you how proud I am it happened. It's been the biggest honour to represent my country, one that I had only dreamt about as a young girl. 'I've played with incredible players, worked with some incredible managers, played in some amazing tournaments and have some irreplaceable memories. 'My journey has been full of ups and downs, setbacks and achievements. Enough has been said and written about those, but regardless of whatever was thrown at me, I want you all to know that every time I put on that England badge I gave 100 per cent. 'Every single call-up, I accepted my role and did whatever was needed for the team. I wanted England to win. I've always been there to help England win. 'My mum had a dream of me representing my country and I'm so proud I was able to do that and play in front of you all. I will never, ever forget the noise when my name is read out at a stadium. ‌ 'I was first selected when I was playing in WSL 2, I played a part in the game-changing World Cup, winning bronze in 2015, creating some memories of a lifetime. 'Starting in every game and winning the Euros in 2022 was a dream come true, to be a part of change in women's football was one of the best experiences I could have ever imagined. ‌ 'Thank you to you all, for embracing me as a young girl from Reading who had a dream. I hope you all know, wearing that badge was the greatest honour. To every young girl that suffers setbacks, just remember you can. You can.' England confirmed that tributes will be paid to Kirby's international career at a Lionesses match after the summer. Boss Sarina Wiegman added: 'Fran has given so much to England and has been an inspiration to many for what she has achieved on and off the pitch. I have loved working with her, she is an amazing player and a great person. 'I fully understand her decision to say goodbye at this point in her wonderful career, and we will always be grateful for her incredible contribution to the team.' Fran Kirby follows Mary Earps in announcing England retirement

Fran Kirby has become the second England player to retire just weeks before Sarina Wiegman's side defend their European Championship title in Switzerland. Having represented England at four major tournaments, including starting every game of the Euros triumph in 2022, Kirby joins Mary Earps in bowing out of international football. Earps called time on her own England career last week after losing her starting place to Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, in a move that left Wiegman 'disappointed and sad'. Kirby's decision comes just four weeks out from the tournament – and after she had played in Friday's 6-0 thrashing of Portugal at Wembley. She withdrew from the squad for Tuesday's match against Spain late and told her England team-mates after the 2-1 defeat of her decision to retire. She announced her decision on social media after the match having been told by Wiegman she was unlikely to make the Euros squad. 'After being in the England team since I was 21, it's time to close that chapter of my life,' wrote the 31-year-old Brighton midfielder. 'I didn't ever want this day to come, but I cannot tell you how proud I am it happened. 'It's been the biggest honour to represent my country, one that I had only dreamt about as a young girl. I've played with incredible players, worked with some incredible managers, played in some amazing tournaments and have some irreplaceable memories.' In an interview with the BBC about her retirement, Kirby explained that she had been mulling retirement for more than a year and knew that this summer's Euros would be her last major tournament for England. She added: 'The plan was to retire after the Euros but after speaking to Sarina I'm not going to make the squad. It was like a dagger to my heart but also a weight off my shoulders. It was emotional for both of us but we both respected what each person was saying.' Reacting to the news on Tuesday night, Wiegman said: 'First of all I love working with her. I think she has had an incredible career, which is still going on. She's an amazing player, she's an incredible person too. She did everything to make the squad. She has always been ready to play, ready to perform, helping others, whatever I asked her to do. 'Over time Fran and I have had several conversations. She has been unlucky with injuries too, she always fought back and still had some opportunities to play. I told her she was most likely not going to make the squad, we had these honest conversations. I think she's an inspiration to a lot of people and an example.' Kirby started every game in 2022, represented Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics after making her international debut in 2014, and finishes her career with 77 caps and 19 goals. She added: 'My mum had a dream of me representing my country, and I'm so proud I was able to do that and play in front of you all. I will never, ever forget the noise when my name is read out at a stadium. I was first selected when I was playing in WSL2, I played a part in the game-changing World Cup, winning bronze in 2015, creating some memories of a lifetime. 'Starting in every game and winning the Euros in 2022 was a dream come true, to be a part of change in women's football was one of the best experiences I could have ever imagined. Thank you.'

Love Islander's secret connection to former star revealed

LOVE Island newbie Dejon Noel Williams is getting ready to start his villa adventure – and thankfully he has a famous pal who may have been able to provide him some tips. The 26-year-old personal trainer from London was one of the first stars to be announced today for this year's Love Island, heading off to Mallorca in the hopes of finding some romance. 6 6 6 But before the show kicks off next Monday, The Sun can reveal that he already has a connection to a successful past contestant. Dejon's father, Gifton Noel-Williams, at one point was a professional footballer signed to Watford from 1996 to 2003. During this time, Gifton was teammates with Micah Hyde, the father of Love Island 2023 finalist, Tyrique. Tyrique found love in the villa with Ella Thomas, eventually placing third and staying with Ella for a year before their split. Gifton and Micah played alongside each other throughout their respective time at Watford, being shown as solid pals on the pitch. Tyrique and Dejon are also the same age and have played football like their dads. As childhood friends, Dejon now trains Tyrique, with the pair sharing gym videos together on Instagram. Dejon is open about his famous dad, saying ahead of entering the villa: "I've met all kinds of famous people through him. "When I was younger it was weird because he was just my dad, but we'd go to a game and fans were asking for photos. " He says he's looking for a girl in the villa who "is beautiful on the inside and out, looks after themselves and is healthy". Ten Years of Love Island Maya Jama will be back to welcome the new gang into the villa for the ultimate summer of love. The Sun revealed exclusive photos of the new-look Majorcan villa, which promises to deliver some of the show's biggest twists yet. Dejon is not the only islander with a famous connection, with fellow star Tommy Bradley revealing he has a famous boxing brother, Jamie, who trained with Anthony Joshua. Love Island starts Monday at 9pm on ITV, ITV2 and ITVX. 6 6 6
