‘Important that border de-escalation continues': Jaishankar holds talks with Chinese foreign minister
'Basis for any positive momentum in our ties is to maintain peace and tranquility on our border,' Jaishankar told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's who arrived in Delhi on Monday for a two-day visit to mend ties with India, which plunged after the deadly skirmishes along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in 2020.
'It is also important that de-escalation on border continues,' he said, adding that he expects discussions will contribute to a stable, forward looking relationship.
The EAM further emphasised the need to enhance stability in the global economy. This comes as pressure mounts from Washington, with US President Donald Trump threatening to impose tariffs on allied countries and adversaries alike to settle trade deficits since he took office in January.
This marks the 24th round of the Special Representatives' (SR) talks on the India-China boundary question. Yi will hold the talks with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and Jaishankar during his visit.

Rajnath reaches out to DMK, TMC, BJD for consensus on VP nominee
NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: Defence minister Rajnath Singh attempted Monday to garner broader support for NDA vice-presidential candidate C P Radhakrishnan, speaking to Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin over the phone, and to former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik (BJD), to seek their support for a consensus. Singh also called up former Andhra Pradesh CM Jagan Mohan Reddy whose YSRCP, with 11 MPs, has pledged to back the NDA candidate. He had earlier, it is understood, reached out to Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee (TMC). In Mumbai, CM Devendra Fadnavis appealed to state "regional parties, in particular Shiv Sena (UBT) and Sharad Pawar's NCP", to vote for Radhakrishnan. Shiv Sena has six LS MPs and the NCP (SP) group has 10. Both parties are part of INDIA bloc. "Not only is he governor of Maharashtra, he is also a voter from the state. He may originally be from Tamil Nadu but he is a voter from Mumbai and has voted in the last assembly election. While filing his nomination he will be mentioning that he is a voter from Mumbai," said Fadnavis, asking "Sena (UBT) and Sharad Pawar, for whom Marathi asmita is important, to forget party differences" on this issue. Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, meanwhile, said while the party welcomed Radhakrishnan's nomination since he was Maharashtra governor, it would go by the INDIA bloc's collective decision. However, Raut pointed out that his party chief, Uddhav Thackeray, was of the view that such constitutional posts should not be politicised and any nominee should be elected unopposed. Since the INDIA bloc doesn't have the numbers to win the VP polls, Raut said, attention shouldn't be diverted from core issues like 'vote chori', voter list manipulation and SIR in Bihar by having a contest in VP polls. He indicated that a contest for VP may not be worth the fight. C P Radhakrishnan, who is Maharashtra's governor, called on PM Modi and other BJP functionaries Monday, ahead of his interaction with NDA floor leaders later in the day. A day after his candidacy was announced, Radhakrishnan arrived in Delhi and was received by Union ministers Pralhad Joshi & Kiren Rijiju. In a post on X, PM Modi wrote, "Met Thiru CP Radhakrishnan ji. Conveyed my best wishes on his being the NDA's VP nominee. His long years of public service and experience across domains will greatly enrich our nation. May he continue to serve with the same dedication and resolve he has always demonstrated (sic)." Later that day, Radhakrishnan, whose election is considered a formality due to NDA's majority, was felicitated by NDA floor leaders at the residence of Pralhad Joshi, where he will stay until the poll. He is also expected to attend the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday. Radhakrishnan is likely to file his nomination papers Wednesday in the presence of top NDA leaders, including CMs from states governed by the alliance. BJP congratulated Radhakrishnan on his nomination and thanked PM Modi for selecting a candidate from the OBC category. The Vice-Presidential election is scheduled for Sept 9. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar welcomed BJP's decision and said JD(U) would support Radhakrishnan. TDP's Nara Lokesh also extended his party's support to Radhakrishnan.

Jaishankar Calls for ‘Candid and Constructive' India-China Ties During Wang Yi Visit
While Jaishankar or the MEA did not mention the topic, Beijing stated that the Indian side had conveyed that 'Taiwan is part of China'. New Delhi: External affairs minister S. Jaishankar on Monday (August 18) told visiting Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi that India and China must adopt a 'candid and constructive' approach to move forward in their relations after a 'difficult period'. Wang, a member of the Communist Party of China's Politburo, arrived in New Delhi on Monday evening and immediately met Jaishankar. While Jaishankar's opening remarks and his post-meeting social media updates did not mention the topic, the Chinese foreign ministry's readout stated that the Indian side had conveyed that 'Taiwan is part of China'. If confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs, this would mark the first official reaffirmation of India's one-China policy in more than 15 years. Wang's visit is primarily to co-chair the Special Representative-level talks on the boundary issue with national security adviser Ajit Doval on Tuesday. He is also expected to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is scheduled to travel to China later this month. This was the second meeting between Jaishankar and Wang within a month. In July, the Indian minister had visited China for the Shanghai Cooperation Summit's foreign ministers' gathering, where the two held delegation-level talks on the sidelines. The increased frequency of interactions between the two Asian powers follows the thaw in ties after the resolution of the military standoff in October 2024, which paved the way for the meeting between Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan. 'Having seen a difficult period in our relationship,' Jaishankar said at the start of the meeting, 'our two nations now seek to move ahead. This requires a candid and constructive approach from both sides'. 'In that endeavour, we must be guided by the three mutuals - mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest. Differences must not become disputes, nor competition conflict,' he stated. Noting that India seeks multipolarity both globally and in Asia, Jaishankar said: 'In the current environment, there is clearly the imperative of maintaining and enhancing stability in the global economy as well'. He also stated that the 'fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is another major priority'. According to the Chinese foreign ministry's press release, Wang said the world is witnessing a rise in 'unilateral bullying practices' and that 'free trade and the international order [are] facing grave challenges'. Wang also highlighted the need for long-term strategic cooperation. 'Both sides should draw lessons from the experience of the past 75 years, establish the right strategic perception, regard each other as partners and opportunities rather than rivals or threats, devote their valuable resources to development and revitalisation, and explore the correct way for neighbouring major countries to respect and trust each other, live in peace, pursue development together and achieve win-win cooperation,' he said. He added: 'China and India should strengthen confidence, move towards each other, overcome disturbances, expand cooperation and consolidate the momentum of improvement in bilateral relations, so that the rejuvenation processes of the two great Eastern civilisations can reinforce and complement one another, providing the certainty and stability most needed for Asia and the world.' After the meeting, Jaishankar described the discussions as fruitful, noting they had 'productive conversations on our economic and trade issues, pilgrimages, people-to-people contacts, river data sharing, border trade, connectivity and bilateral exchanges.'
