Meerut: A fire broke out at a fair in Budaun's Gandhi Ground on Monday morning, triggering eight gas cylinder explosions, gutting at least 24 shops, and leaving three people injured.
According to fire officials, the blaze began around 8 am, allegedly after a shopkeeper lit a stove to prepare tea. Ram Raj Yadav, Chief Fire Officer, Budaun, told TOI, "The fire was brought under control within an hour. We are investigating the cause. Some shopkeepers mentioned a stove might have sparked the fire. No complaint has been filed yet, and there are no fatalities."
The exhibition, organised by the Budaun Municipal Administration, had over 100 stalls. Witnesses said the fire spread rapidly. Mohd Imran, a shopkeeper from Aligarh, said, "I was in my shop when the fire started. Within five minutes, there was a loud explosion, and the blaze intensified. My footwear shop, tent worth Rs1.5 lakh, and goods worth Rs 4.5 lakh were destroyed. Even the cash burned. I am ruined."

E-rickshaw driver slapped with Rs 22k challan for overloading

Noida: Noida traffic police imposed a Rs 22,500 fine on an e-rickshaw driver for overloading on FNG Expressway. A video of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed the vehicle near Parthala Chowk carrying furniture dangerously protruding from both sides and stacked on the roof. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The clip sparked online comments, with many users expressing concerns about traffic violations. Meanwhile, others empathised with the driver. "This man probably cannot afford to pay such a heavy fine. He should be warned and a nominal penalty should be imposed," wrote another user, Sanjay Kumar. After the video surfaced online, traffic police issued a challan of Rs 22,500 after scanning its registration number. The fine was imposed under sections 184 (dangerous driving) and 179(1) (disobedience of any direction given by authority) of the Motor Vehicle Act. GB Nagar has nearly 20,000 registered e-rickshaws that play a critical role in last-mile connectivity across the city in the absence of a city bus service. Data from the traffic police reveals that between Jan and May this year, over 24,000 challans were issued to e-rickshaws and nearly 2,100 were seized for various violations in the district. Vinay Tomar, a traffic sub-inspector, said this is the highest amount levied on an e-rickshaw driver for a traffic violation in Noida so far. "We usually do not impose such heavy penalties on e-rickshaw drivers, but in this case, the manner in which the vehicle was being driven created serious safety threats," Tomar said. On April 8 this year, a 40-year-old man and his minor son sustained injuries after their car crashed into a footpath near Botanical Garden metro station while trying to dodge an oncoming e-rickshaw driving on the wrong side. In another incident on May 15, 2024, two people died and three others were injured after a car collided with an overloaded e-rickshaw in Sector 33. All five passengers in the e-rickshaw suffered serious injuries in the crash.

‘Pink zones' to come up in urban areas for women's safety

1 2 Bhubaneswar: Odisha govt intends to establish 'pink zones', each spanning a 10-km radius, to enhance women's safety, as outlined in Odisha Vision-2036 & 2047, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi released on June 20. The 'vision document', developed through public consultation, charts the state's development trajectory. It aligns with two significant milestones: Odisha's centenary as a linguistic state in 2036 and India's century of independence in 2047. The initiative proposes to implement these 'pink zones' in urban localities in the first phase. These designated women safety areas will incorporate sophisticated CCTV surveillance networks, specialised assistance counters, and continuous monitoring systems to deliver swift support to women facing difficulties. "Our primary goal is to create a robust security infrastructure that women can rely on at any time of the day. These pink zones will serve as safe havens where women can seek immediate help and shelter when needed," a senior police official told TOI. "Each pink zone will feature multiple CCTV cameras, emergency response teams, and well-lit streets. The police department will collaborate with local women's organizations and NGOs to staff the help desks and provide support services," the vision document stated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Thanesar Town Home Value Just Changed (Take a Look) Homes Values Click Here Undo These designated areas will be situated alongside crucial services, including police stations, healthcare facilities, and legal assistance centres. The vision document indicates plans to increase women's representation in the state police force from the current 9% to 15% by 2029, 30% by 2036 and 50% by 2047. The police-to-citizen ratio, currently at 148 officers per one lakh population, is targeted to increase to 165 in 2029, 200 in 2036 and 300 in 2047. According to the vision document, a specialised 'women safety cadre' will oversee all safety-related programmes in the state. "This cadre will develop and implement district-level safety plans, ensuring a structured and proactive approach to addressing safety concerns. Their responsibilities will include liaising with the police, legal service authorities, NGOs, and community groups to create a coordinated response mechanism. They will monitor the implementation of safety measures, conduct evaluations, and propose improvements for enhanced effectiveness," the document stated. The govt plans to protect women from digital harassment, cyberbullying, and monetary fraud. Initiatives include cyber awareness programmes in educational institutions to educate women about online safety. A dedicated 'women cyber security taskforce' will handle complaints and ensure quick prosecution. An accessible application and website will be created for reporting and swift resolution. Awareness drives will be organised to prevent women from falling victim to fraudulent marriage, employment, or financial security promises.
