Efforts to make cotton farming profitable: Union Minister Shivraj Singh
Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Coimbatore on Friday.
He also said the ministry is working to make cotton farming a profitable business for the farmer.
The minister participated in an event named 'Consultation with Stakeholders on Enhancing Cotton Productivity' at ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute.
Addressing the press, the minister said, "We will start a new cotton revolution from Coimbatore. We had a discussion on the problems faced in cotton production and how to increase its productivity.?
Ways to combat diseases affecting cotton were also discussed, he added.
"Our farmers should produce the kind of cotton that the industry needs so that the profit of the farmers should increase. We will do research after listening to all these problems. Many experiments are going on. We are using AI to trap and kill the bacteria and viruses that cause diseases in cotton," Chouhan stated.
On the increasing human-wildlife conflict issue, the central minister said, "Agriculture and forest are State Subjects. The Union Government has been providing necessary cooperation altogether whenever the State Government requires it."

Naidu to launch 'Annadata Sukhibhava' on Aug 2; Over 46 lakh farmers to benefit
Vijayawada: The state government is making all arrangements to launch 'Annadata Sukhibhava', a scheme aimed at providing cash incentives to farmers, on August 2, alongside the PM-Kisan scheme. Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu will inaugurate the scheme at Veerayapalem village under Darsi mandal of Prakasam district. As many as 46.85 lakh farmers will benefit from the scheme. While the state government is providing Rs 5,000 to each farmer in the first tranche, the Union government will disburse ₹2,000. In total, Annadata Sukhibhava aims to transfer Rs 20,000 to farmers in three instalments, inclusive of PM-Kisan benefits. During a review meeting held on Thursday with senior officials from the finance, revenue, water resources, and agriculture departments, the chief minister directed officials to ensure that every eligible farmer receives the financial support directly into their bank accounts. "For the NDA government, supporting farmers is not a burden but a responsibility," Naidu stated. "We are rebuilding every system and working towards financial stability. The good work done should be effectively communicated to the public," he added, suggesting the use of the 'Mana Mitra' app for outreach. The state government has synchronised its disbursement with the Union government's payment to ensure that farmers can immediately use the funds for agricultural purposes. The state will provide Rs 5,000 each in the first and second instalments, and Rs 4,000 in the third, while the Union government will give Rs 2,000 in each phase. In the first phase alone, the Union government is spending Rs 831 crore, while the state is disbursing Rs 2,343 crore. Meanwhile, officials informed the chief minister that 59,750 grievances related to the scheme had been registered, of which 58,464 have already been resolved. A toll-free helpline (155251) has been set up to address any doubts or issues related to the scheme. Chief ecretary K Vijayanand, special chief secretary of agriculture B. First ‘Make in India' 1MW green hydrogen plant commissioned at Kandla
Rajkot: Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) on Thursday commissioned the country's first 'Make in India' one megawatt (MW) green hydrogen plant, at Kandla. This is the first phase of a planned 10MW facility and is the first such development at an Indian port. Union shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the plant, calling it a "new benchmark" in the execution of green hydrogen projects. "DPA has demonstrated a shining example of speed, scale and skill," he said. The plant was set up in four months and is fully indigenous. The electrolyzer used to produce the hydrogen is made in India, and the entire project was led by Indian engineers. The green hydrogen generated will initially power 11 buses and street lighting within the port. Over time, DPA aims to use it to fuel all the resources of the port. DPA chairman S K Singh told TOI, "Another 5MW will be added by the end of this fiscal year, with the full 10MW facility expected to be operational by the middle of the next fiscal year." "DPA becomes the first port in India to operationalize a Make-In-India green hydrogen facility of this scale, capable of producing approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This breakthrough marks a pivotal step in maritime decarbonization, enhancing India's global leadership in sustainable port operations," DPA said in a statement. Green hydrogen has many applications such as fuel for power plants, vehicles, tugs and vessels. The foundation stone for the plant was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 26 during his visit to Bhuj.

Starlink gets licence to begin India ops, way cleared for spectrum allocation
India has officially granted Elon Musk's Starlink a licence to provide satellite-based internet services, paving the way for the company's entry into the country's growing digital market, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Thursday. The approval comes as India marks the 30th anniversary of its first-ever cellular call, made on July 31, 1995."Starlink has been granted a Unified License to launch satellite internet services in India. Frameworks for spectrum allocation and gateway establishment are ready, ensuring smooth rollout," news agency PTI quoted the Union minister as Department of Telecommunications (DoT) granted Starlink the authorisation earlier in July. The company had first applied for permissions in 2021 but faced delays over spectrum allocation and regulatory approvals. The recent green light follows months of engagement with Indian authorities and marks a significant step toward offering internet access in remote regions of the country. Starlink, operated by Musk's SpaceX, is expected to compete with other players such as Bharti Group-backed Eutelsat OneWeb and Reliance Jio's JV with SES, both of which are awaiting spectrum allocation to begin operations.
