
REVEALED: Why more WA drivers are switching off safety tech
That's the surprising choice of West Australian drivers who are switching off their car safety features — such as lane assist technology — because they are too annoying.
A new survey reveals that nearly a quarter of WA drivers — or 23 per cent — admitted they had turned off or dialled down their car's safety features, with most (72 per cent) saying noises and lights are distracting in AAMI's survey of Australian motorists.
A fifth of drivers claimed they did not need it when driving, and 10 per cent said they did not trust the technology.
In another blow to the State's record on merging, the most common device shut down was lane-departure warning or assist technologies — with more than half saying they had hit mute.
The technology differs, but ranges from alerts when a car is detected in the next lane while indicating, to corrective actions to maintain a vehicle in the centre of the road.
But we are less confident parking, with just four per cent turning off assistance in getting between the white lines in a bay. Almost two thirds accepted the features were making Australian drivers safer.
Insurer AAMI's motor prevention manager Mary Kennedy said the car safety features were not just gadgets.
'They're designed to help protect us and make our roads safer. We should be embracing these features, not turning them off,' she said.
'Many of the safety features that drivers are turning off — like collision warning and automatic emergency braking — are really effective at preventing (nose-to-tail) crashes, along with many others including reversing into another vehicle or object such as a trolley or bollard.
'Drivers should understand and use these safety features to enhance their own awareness, reduce the risk of human error, and avoid getting into an accident in the first place.'
Motor Trade Association WA general manager membership and industry engagement Graham Cawley said he had heard of cases where drivers had returned the cars to dealerships to have safety features switched off.
'It's commonly reported and known that drivers are actively turning off some of the safety features in vehicles because they can be a little bit intrusive, particularly lane keeper to be an obvious one,' he said.
'We've even had some consumers take vehicles back to the manufacturers or the dealer representatives complaining that the vehicle is pulling to one side, thinking there's something wrong with the steering, but it's actually just that 'lane-keep' function.
'A lot of vehicle drivers will keep to one side of the lane without even realising it, and predominantly that's away from the car that may be next to them or coming in the opposite direction.'
Mr Cawley said drivers should keep the safety features on because of the risk of other distractions.
Osborne Park Subaru sales consultant Emma Western said customers had spoken to her about other vehicles having distracting safety warnings.

'A lot of people complain about things being too much, and it makes the car less safe because they're turning all the features off.
'ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) are going to start deducting safety points for the things if they're too intrusive, so it is going to start actually making the cars less safe because of it.'
The survey comes as AAMI releases data from crash claims over the 12 months to February, revealing the most common details of our poor driving.
Rear-endings remained the State's most common accident, with nearly a third of claims relating to 'nose to tail' crashes, with collisions with stationary objects coming in second, at 27 per cent of claims.
A fifth of claims related to damage while the car was parked.
Men were the worse driver by gender, making 58 per cent of claims, compared to 42 per cent from women. Drivers aged over 65 claimed the most, making up 17 per cent of insurance applications, compared to just six per cent of drivers under 24.
Friday was the worst day of the week for crashes, while during the middle of the day proved the most common time for accidents.

Hybrids to dominate Suzuki Australia's electrification future
As Suzuki Australia gears up to launch its first-ever electric vehicle (EV) in 2026, the brand's local boss says hybrids will continue to dominate over EVs in the coming years. I think in the next decade, you're going to see a complete shift from [internal combustion] engines to hybrid powertrains and a slightly larger percentage of EV sales." The shift from a product-specific name also aligns with the Company's long-term strategy to drive growth through diversified revenue channels without confusing investors or partners. Pure Hydrogen (ASX:PH2) notes its operations have now evolved to comprise the supply of both battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, as well as hydrogen equipment such as refuelling solutions and small production facilities built into shipping containers for rapid deployment. In line with its rebrand to Pure One, the Company noted that its Australian operations have been increasingly focused on growing the sales pipeline for its BEVs, which are more commercially viable in the near-term due to lower upfront costs and greater government support. However, it has also secured hydrogen vehicle orders from large customers across the construction, infrastructure, and waste management sectors including TOLL Transport, Heidelberg Materials, Barwon Water and Solo Resource Recovery. In the US and Canadian markets, stronger government subsidies and incentives are accelerating hydrogen vehicle uptake, making HFC solutions commercially attractive with the company being well advanced on several sale and distribution agreements. As part of its strategic focus on new vehicle rollouts and product development, the Company recently completed the design and engineering works for two new vehicles. The HD100C hybrid coach and TG23 hybrid low cab rigid truck present an affordable entry point to clean energy technology, with price points comparable to traditional diesel variants while offering potential fuel savings of over 35% compared to diesel equivalents. HD100C is a 12-metre vehicle that's expected to appeal to bus operators as its price point is lower than other BEV and HFC buses. TG23 is a 23-tonne hybrid rigid model that combines electric drive with a diesel back-up, making it suitable for regional operations or long-range urban services where charging infrastructure is limited. Real-world testing shows Ford Ranger among emissions-breaching models
Some of Australia's best-selling models used as much as one-third more than their official claimed fuel consumption figures – and several breach their regulatory CO2 emissions limits – according to the results of the latest real-world test carried out by the Australian Automobile Association (AAA). The AAA tested the fuel economy claims across 30 of the most popular models sold in Australia, including the Ford Ranger, Mazda 3, Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid and Chery Tiggo 8 Pro. It compared the on-road fuel use and emissions during physical testing with the figures produced by automakers in legally mandated laboratory testing. It found 25 of the 30 evaluated vehicles exceeded their claimed fuel-efficiency figures, while six vehicles (20 per cent of those tested) breached current Australian lab-tested regulatory emissions limits. That's despite more accurate testing for cars from Europe, where the Worldwide Harmonised Testing Procedure (WLTP) – designed with input from vehicle manufacturers – intends to produce official fuel-use claims that are closer to real-world results. The Hyundai Kona Hybrid was the worst offender when it came to fuel consumption, using 33 per cent more fuel than its official 3.9L/100km combined economy figure, with AAA achieving 5.2L/100km. Yet Hyundai was at the positive end of the results, too, with its Staria van being one of the best-performing vehicles alongside the Mercedes-Benz GLB 200 mid-size luxury SUV. Both models came within one per cent of their official fuel claims. Vehicles to achieve better than expected fuel economy results include the Ford Transit Custom van, which led with a nine per cent better-than-claimed result. The Lexus NX350h mid-size luxury SUV was the next best at seven per cent, and the Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 and the smaller GLA at three and two per cent better respectively. While the Transit shone, the Ford Ranger – Australia's best-selling vehicle for the past two years and leading the sales charts so far in 2025 – produced excessively high emissions, with results showing 552mg/km of nitrous oxide emissions. The test was for the Ranger XLT with the 3.0-litre V6, which makes 184kW/600Nm. Ford Australia has detuned the same engine for the 2026 Ranger Super Duty, lowering power by 30kW to meet tougher emissions Euro 6d emissions laws coming into effect in Australia from December 1, 2025. The Toyota Fortuner – which uses the underpinnings and engine from the Toyota HiLux – also exceeded emissions limits, as did the Toyota HiAce SLWB and HiAce LWB vans, and the Suzuki Vitara and BMW X1 small SUVs. Yet the Ford Ranger was commendable in its fuel use, posting a result of 8.9L/100km in testing to come within six per cent of Ford's official 8.4L/100km claim. The AAA says it has now tested 114 popular models in Australia, with 77 per cent of vehicles tested using more fuel than advertised. 'Some vehicles perform as advertised, but most do not, and our program is seeking to reward carmakers that deliver genuine financial and environmental savings,' said Michael Bradley, managing director of the AAA, in a statement. The testing comes as the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) comes into effect in 2025, surrounded by strong debate across automakers about its effectiveness. Introduced on January 1, 2025, the NVES is designed to lower carbon dioxide emissions at the tailpipe of new vehicles through an annual reduction of legal CO2 limits. Each brand's emissions are measured across all models its sells to establish a fleet-average figure; those in breach are fined, while those below are eligible for regulatory credits. Car companies can buy credits from others to reduce their overall average emissions figure and avoid or lower the cost of fines, which became enforceable on July 1, 2025. While most car companies are in favour of reducing tailpipe emissions from vehicles, debate remains ongoing about the effectiveness of the way NVES has been rolled out. Several auto executives have been publicly critical, most recently including Suzuki Queensland boss Paul Dillion. His comments were made at the launch of the Suzuki Fronx, a light-sized 1.5-litre hybrid hatchback, which will be liable for financial penalties under NVES from 2026. Other automakers, such as electric vehicle (EV) brand Polestar, are in favour of even tougher regulations, with the brand leaving the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) in protest of the public criticism of NVES. Polestar was joined by fellow EV-maker Tesla in quitting the industry body in 2024 over the issue. Below are the fuel consumption results from the latest round of the AAA's real-world testing.
