Who Will BRS Back In Vice President Polls? KTR Ties Support To Urea Supply For Telangana Farmers

News1813 hours ago
KTR reaffirmed BRS's independent position, stressing that the party is neither with the NDA nor with the INDIA bloc.
Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao has declared that his party's support in the upcoming Vice Presidential election will go only to the party that guarantees 2 lakh metric tons of urea for the farmers of Telangana.
Highlighting the ongoing agricultural crisis, KTR said, 'We have not yet decided whom to vote for. But I assure you, BRS will support only the party that guarantees adequate urea supply to Telangana farmers. Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi — be ready. We have time till November 9."
Speaking at a press conference at his Nandi Nagar residence, KTR reaffirmed BRS's independent position, stressing that the party is neither with the NDA nor with the INDIA bloc.
'We fought elections independently in 2014 and 2018, and we will continue to take decisions on our own terms. Both BJP and Congress have done nothing meaningful for Telangana. If the INDIA bloc candidate is proposed by the Telangana CM, supporting him is out of the question," he said.
Taking a swipe at the Congress, he accused them of disrespecting former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. 'What did Congress do to PV Narasimha Rao after his death? They didn't even allow his body into the AICC office. Now, our CM speaking about Telugu pride," KTR said.
On electoral reforms and SIR, he reiterated BRS's demand for a return to paper ballots in place of EVMs, starting from Bihar.
Turning to the issue of BC reservations, KTR accused the Congress of misleading people.
'Unless reservations are placed in the Ninth Schedule, they will not materialize. Earlier surveys showed 52 per cent BC population, now they claim 46 per cent. What happened to the Rs 20,000 crore annual promise for BCs? What about the MBC Ministry, and Rs 500 crore for each corporation? All remain unfulfilled," he added.
Reacting on the Marwari Go Back controversy, KTR made it clear that BRS stands for inclusivity, 'People who are living in Telangana are our brothers. We even supported migrant workers during the Corona crisis. It is wrong to disrespect them. But at the same time, Telangana people deserve their due respect."

RS approves bill to set up IIM in Guwahati

The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed a bill to set up an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam, only the second IIM in the Northeast after the one in Shillong and overall 22nd premier management institution across the country. RS approves bill to set up IIM in Guwahati The Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. '...We want to assure the countrymen and especially the people of Assam that IIM Guwahati will admit students from this academic session. Faculties will be appointed and academic activities will also start,' Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan said in the Rajya Sabha while introducing the bill. As soon as the bill was introduced after the House reconvened at 2pm following multiple adjournments earlier in the day, the Opposition staged a walkout in protest over their demand for a debate on the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. Despite the Opposition walkout, several lawmakers from the ruling BJP, its allies AIADMK and NCP, as well as parties such as BJP, BSP, YSRCP and BRS took part in the discussion over the IIM bill and extended their support. Replying to the discussion on the bill, Pradhan said IIM have been functioning as premier management institutions since 1961. 'The 22nd IIM in the country will be set up in Guwahati at an investment of ₹555 crore,' the minister said. 'In the 53 years from 1961 to 2014, only 13 IIMs were set up. With the addition of IIM Guwahati, the number of IIMs set up under the Modi government in 11 years will rise to nine.' The bill was passed by a voice vote in the Rajya Sabha. With the establishment of an IIM in Guwahati as an institution of national importance, the Assam city — which also has an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and National Law University (NLU) — will emerge as an education hub.

Amid Trump tariffs, Jaishankar invites Russian firms to engage ‘more intensively' with India

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday called upon Russian companies to engage "more intensively" with its Indian counterparts, citing New Delhi's initiatives that have opened more avenues for foreign businesses. S Jaishankar during the 26th Session of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural cooperation, in Moscow(@DrSJaishankar) Addressing the India-Russia Business Forum in Moscow, Jaishankar highlighted the time-tested relationship the two countries have shared and called for deeper economic ties amid global uncertainty. "The 'Make in India' and other such initiatives have opened up new windows for foreign businesses. The modernisation and the urbanisation of India generate their own demands, flowing from shifts in consumption and lifestyle. Each of these dimensions represent an invitation for Russian companies to engage more intensively with their Indian counterparts. Our endeavour is to encourage them to rise to that challenge," he said. Jaishankar made the remarks after he highlighted how India's GDP was on a rise, drawing focus on the "need for large resources from dependable sources". "In some cases, it could be assured supplies of essential products, fertiliser, chemicals, and machinery, being good examples. Its rapidly growing infrastructure offers business openings to enterprises with an established track record in their own country," said Jaishankar. The External Affairs Minister's invite to Russian companies comes days ahead of US President Donald Trump's 50% tariff deadline for India. The Republican had earlier announced 25% duties on Indian imports, which he later doubled, citing India's oil trade with Russia. While one half of these tariffs have been imposed, the other are set to take effect on August 27. 'India-Russia ties one of steadiest' Further pushing for deeper trade ties between the two countries, S Jaishankar said in Moscow that while India and Russia's ties have been one of the steadiest over the years, it didn't reflect as much on the economic cooperation between them. "Our trade basket remains limited and till recently, so did our trade volume. It may have grown in recent years, but then, so too has the trade deficit. Both the diversification and balancing of trade now urgently mandate more strenuous efforts on our part. At the end of the day, they are essential not just to reach higher trade targets but even to sustain the existing levels," Jaishankar said. Pushing for both nations to contemplate more investments, joint ventures and other forms of collaboration, Jaishankar said that him and Russia's first deputy prime minister Denis Manturov want to send out a "clear message that an enduring strategic partnership must have a strong and sustainable economic component". Jaishankar also pushed for a sync between what the respective governments are discussing and what businesses are planning in order for India and Russia to collaborate better economically.

"Draconian Act": Congress Slams Centre Over Constitution Amendment Bill

New Delhi: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday criticised the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill that sought to allow the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and ministers if they were held on serious criminal charges. The Congress leader accused the ruling BJP of using its majority in Parliament to push through the bill with the intention of targeting the opposition. He called the move "draconian" and politically motivated. The 130th Constitution Amendment Bill seeks to remove the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers who are facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and have been detained for 30 consecutive days. Speaking to ANI, the Congress leader called the bill a political weapon and said, "The intention of the ruling side to pass this bill using its majority is not right. This will be used as a tool to target the opposition. This is a draconian act." He further questioned the timing of the bill, linking it to ongoing debates over the allegation on the Election Commission of 'vote theft'. "At a time when questions are rising against the Election Commission, there is panic in the ruling party, and this issue has now been raised to divert attention from it?" Adhir Ranjan told ANI. Earlier in the day, slamming the BJP government over the introduction of the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that legislation, if passed, will allow the ruling party at the Centre to register false cases against Chief Ministers of the opposition parties and it will shake the democratic foundations of the country. In a post on X, Mr Stalin said that the BJP Government has decided to "defile" the Constitution."The 130th Constitutional Amendment is not reform -- this is a Black Day and this is a Black Bill. 30-day arrest = Removal of an elected CM. No trial, no conviction -- just BJP's DIKTAT. This is how DICTATORSHIPS begin: Steal votes, Silence rivals and Crush States," wrote Mr Stalin while condemning the bill. The Tamil Nadu CM pointed out that the introduction of the said bill is the BJP's government diversion tactic to bring the bill at a time when it is facing allegations over "vote theft". "After the expose of #VoteTheft, the very mandate on which the Union BJP Government was formed is in serious question. Its legitimacy is doubtful. Having stolen the mandate of the people through fraud, the BJP is now desperate to distract public attention from this expose. To do that, they have brought in the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill," he said. Expressing faith in the judiciary, CM Stalin said that the Constitution Amendment bill will be struck down by the courts. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, to further amend the Constitution of India and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, apart from the bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. He also proposed sending the bllls to a joint committee of Parliament.
