'I'm a baby name expert - one classic boys name is on the brink of extinction'

Baby name consultant SJ Strum says ten everyday dad monikers are 'falling off a cliff' when it comes to new arrivals and reveals the reasons why in our exclusive chat
It's one of the most important decisions an expectant parent can make but choosing the name of your new arrival can prove tricky too. From names inspired by favourite TV characters to truly unique monikers, there of thousands of choices out there making the decision a difficult one.
Consultant SJ Strum is on hand to help mums and dads-to-be name their babies and with Father's Day around the corner she's shared the ten 'dad' names on the brink of extinction. And topping the unhappy list is a very familiar name.

"They're just not fun and exciting to modern parents choosing names today," said SJ. "Names like this go out of style and have a huge hiatus from the charts so you might not hear of another baby with that name for many decades but suddenly the name will become fresh and new again."

1. Steve
2. Colin
3. Craig
4. Derek

5. Gareth
6. Tyrone
7. Phil

8. Wolfgang
9. Sameer
10. Roger

The previously popular names were given to just 20 British children combined in 2024 and SJ can explain why. "Names all go in a cycle and while we all know a Steve and a Gareth, if you track their popularity it fell off a cliff after the '90s," she said. "They haven't aged well.
"That's because we have a lot of associations with these names, whether our dad, our dad's mates, a bit geography teacher," added the baby name consultant. "There's something about: 'Will you change Phil's nappy? Will you give Derek a bottle? that just doesn't sounds right."
The baby name consultant said a change in the way we name our children was another factor for common dad names declining in popularity. "If your dad was called Steve, the first born son was traditionally called Steve but that tradition has died out over the last few years," she said. "Parents are looking for something a bit different and unique and special for their babies."

But SJ insists that decades on, the unpopular monikers WILL make a comeback, just like the 'grandma' names such as Betty, Mabel and Gigi rising in popularity today after a hiatus of 100 years or more. "These names have become vintage cool," she says. "So we will definitely see these dad names come back up but it won't be for a long time."
As well as a new found love for vintage names, today's parents look to their own personalities and interests for inspiration. "At the moment it's all about the Wild West country names," said SJ. "Beyonce's bringing out her country hit and people love the TV show Yellowstone. Everyone's wearing the cowboy hats and boots and that style just blends into names.

"I'm seeing Cassidy, Harlow and Billie for a girl on a lot of lists, Dusty too and I absolutely love it.
Another huge trend is for fantasy or celestial names like Luna and Cosmo. "A lot of parents nowadays are most spiritual," said SJ. "These names invoke mysticism and power."
The leading baby name expert's top tips for choosing a name for your new arrival include agreeing on your name's style and criteria before you start discussing it. "Do we want vintage or modern, do we want a long or a short name, do we want a name that honours somebody in our family?" said SJ, who is the author of a bestselling guide called Baby Name Envy.

The writer's second piece of expert advice is turning to a particular aesthetic or a passion. "If reading or travel is your passion, take a look at names within that theme," she advised.
But despite careful planning, sometimes unexpected events can throw a spanner in the works when it comes to naming your children. The recent arrival of Peppa Pig's little sister Evie has left mums of baby Evies wondering if they had made the right decision and people called Alexa have accused Amazon of ruining their name with their popular digital assistant.
"I had somebody write into the consultancy, she had an Elsie and an Anna," said SJ of the hugely popular kids' movie Frozen. "Somebody else wrote in with a Harry and Meghan. What are the chances?"
The baby name consultant is working with Etsy, the home of personalised gifts. "Seeing your name on a piece of personalised homeware or something you can wear is such a beautiful gift and Etsy is the home of these," she said.

Since their 2023 divorce, the former sweethearts' relationship has deteriorated further in public and played out painfully in the courts SALT IN WOUND How Ioan Gruffudd's baby bombshell sparked hell for ex Alice Evans 'rubbing salt in wound' as she fights homelessness HOLLYWOOD star Ioan Gruffudd delighted fans on Father's Day as he kissed wife Bianca's blossoming baby bump in a silhouette portrait that revealed he is becoming a dad again. But the joyous photograph has caused fresh turmoil for his 'fuming' ex Alice Evans, with concerned pals saying it has 'rubbed salt in the wounds' after her battle to avoid homelessness with their two kids. And while he has continued to find work and moved on with new wife Bianca Wallace, who he married earlier this year, Alice has resorted to begging fans for cash on crowdfunding websites as her savings dry up. Advertisement A source close to the mum of two said of Ioan's very public pregnancy announcement: 'Alice will be absolutely fuming over this. 'She's made no secret of the fact she's destitute looking after the two kids, so to have him rub how well he's doing in her face is a real gut-punch. 'For Ioan to not only break the news like that, but do it on Father's Day . . . it's yet another horribly upsetting saga for her to deal with.' Since their 2023 divorce, the former sweethearts' relationship has deteriorated further in public and played out painfully in the courts. Ioan won a restraining order against Alice following a string of social media posts she made about him, including a claim he told her 'he would leave if I gained weight'. Relations were so strained that their eldest girl Ella, then 13, applied for a restraining order against him, which was denied by a judge. While Welshman Ioan's career has continued to flourish — seeing him starring in Will Smith's Bad Boys comeback last year — Alice has not made a film or TV show since 2018. Ioan Gruffudd marries Bianca Wallace two years after bitter divorce from Alice Evans amid custody battle In February, she claimed she and her children would end up homeless in Los Angeles. She has relied on the kindness of fans, launching a crowdfunding appeal on the GoFundMe website and asking if anyone had a 'spare room'. Advertisement Earlier this month, Alice complained that 'nobody even wants to employ me'. But this month, having collected nearly £14,000 in donations, she finally managed to find a new place to live. While Alice has struggled as a single mother, Ioan's social media paints a very different picture of his life. If you were to glance at his Instagram, you would think things were perfect with wife Bianca. They frequently post images of themselves smiling and laughing together in swanky locations. Advertisement Last month, they shared a video of their intimate wedding, with the pair sipping champagne just after sunset. And yesterday, actress Bianca, 32, wrote, 'Baby Gruffudd poppin' out to say hello!' next to the image of Ioan kissing her bump. Our source added: 'Alice knows every baby is a blessing, and as a devoted mother herself, she understands how joyous a first baby is. But this will cut her deep. 'Her kids are her top priority and to her, this just looks like they're moving lower down the pecking order.' Alice certainly has had little to smile about. Advertisement Her social media messages often talk about the 'hate' against her online and going 'through hell' over the past few years. And work has been tough to come by. Alice, who was born in the US but grew up in Bristol, has taken to earning money by offering personal videos to fans via the Cameo website. Other than that, her main income stream seems to be from appearances at conventions for her old TV shows including The Vampire Diaries and Lost. Both Ioan and Alice have been highly successful performers, starring in big-budget productions, so her financial struggles have come as a surprise to fans. Alice noted: 'If you don't know divorce court, you simply cannot know how much money is wasted.' She wrote: 'We may be on the verge of being thrown out of our current home but I am working like heck to stop it happening and to keep my girls happy and healthy.' The actress had worried she would end up without a roof over her head or in temporary accommodation. Now, the sight of her ex-husband kissing Bianca's bump will no doubt sour her joy over securing a place to live. It has been obvious since Hornblower star Ioan told Alice in January 2021 he 'no longer loves her' that this was the opposite of an amicable break-up. Advertisement She told followers on social media that 'I will wash my linen in public' — and she has been true to her word. Alice spoke about her pain and claimed that Ioan 'is always angry — he was born angry'. When he went public about his relationship with Australian Bianca in October 2021, Alice struck back, accusing her estranged husband of being unfaithful. There was no proof, though, that he had cheated on Alice with his new partner. In the face of constant accusations from Alice, Ioan filed for a restraining order in February 2022. In the court documents, Ioan alleged: 'Alice threatened to tell people I had abused her and our daughters; she threatened to call the police on me if I did not comply with her demands. 'She threatened to tell people I am a drug addict and put me in prison; she threatened to write a fake diary that reflected an abused victim, and to have the diary published.' Advertisement In August 2022, Ioan persuaded a judge to issue a three-year restraining order against Alice, which prevented her from making social media posts against him and Bianca. She was twice accused of breaching it, but charges were dropped. Their battle for custody over their two daughters, who were conceived using IVF, also turned very nasty. Alice wants sole custody, while Ioan has pushed for joint custody. Ella's application for a restraining order against her dad in 2023 involved claims that Bianca had 'slammed a door on her' during a visit. Advertisement A couple of months later, though, her case was dismissed by a judge and Ioan responded by claiming that it was Alice who was harming their children's welfare. He said: 'Alice has continued to inflict serious emotional harm on Ella and Elsie by her statements and by interfering in my relationship with them.' The divorce did come through, but the custody battle rolls on. It is understandable that Ioan and Bianca are excited about their baby news. Bianca was diagnosed with aggressive multiple sclerosis in 2019, which left her unable to pick up a pen and fearing she would be left unable to walk. Advertisement A source close to Ioan added: 'Ioan's only wish is to spend more time with his children, and he's already gone to court to fight for them. 'Despite Alice's efforts to freeze him out, he wants nothing more than to keep them in his life and out of this sad tug of war.'

Bruce Willis' wife makes heartbreaking admission in Father's Day tribute

Hollywood icon Bruce Willis' wife Emma Heming Willis has shared a heartbreaking tribute to the actor to mark Father's Day as she shared her wishes for things to be different Bruce Willis' wife Emma Heming has penned a heartfelt message to mark Father's Day as she shared her pain. The Hollywood icon, 70, has taken a step away from acting and the spotlight following his frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and aphasia diagnosis. In February 2023, his family made the heartbreaking announcement the Die Hard and Pulp Fiction actor had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, a rare form of the illness, at the age of 67. Prior to this, Bruce had been diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that causes speaking or the ability to understand language is impaired. ‌ Since then he has lived out of the spotlight while he is cared for by his family, including wife of 16 years Emma, ex-wife Demi Moore and the three grown up daughters he shares with Demi - Rumer, 36, Scout, 33, and 31-year-old Tallulah. He also has two younger daughters Mabel, 12, and Evelyn, 10, with Emma. ‌ To mark Father's Day, Emma shared a touching message alongside a photo of Bruce cuddling one of their little girls. She penned: "Happy Father's Day to all the dads living with disability or disease, showing up in the ways they can and to the children who show up for them. "What Bruce teaches our girls goes far beyond words. Resilience, unconditional love, and the quiet strength in simply being present. This photo says so much. Love deepens. It adapts. It stays, even when everything else changes." Emma then shared her own feelings as she added: "But to be fair to myself, these symbolic days stir up a lot. I'm profoundly sad today. I wish, with every cell in my body, that things could be different for him and lighter for our family. "As they say in our FTD community, 'It is what it is.' And while that might sound dismissive, to me, it's not. It grounds me. It helps me return to the acceptance of what is and not fight this every step of the way like I used to. Today, let's celebrate the badass dads, those who are here, and those we carry with us. Onward." ‌ Just last week, Emma revealed how Bruce continued to act despite his diagnosis. In her upcoming book The Unexpected Journey, which is set to be released on September 9, Emma shares intimate details about the measures that were taken to keep Bruce in front of the camera while his cognitive abilities declined. According to reports, some of the tactics directors used included shortening his dialogue and feeding him lines via an earpiece, which was discreetly operated by a close friend on set. These behind-the-scenes accommodations allowed the Die Hard legend to complete roles in films like Assassin (2023) and the Detective Knight trilogy (2022–2023). "I really wrote the book that I wish someone had handed me the day we got our diagnosis with no hope, no direction … not much. Today life looks different for me and our family because I was able to put support into place," she said. "This isn't a memoir, it's a self-help guide for caregivers, written to hold space for our heartbreak and our healing." If you have been affected by this story, advice and support can be found at Dementia UK.
