AG Barr to pull Strathmore bottled water brand
UK beverages group AG Barr intends to scrap bottled water brand Strathmore.
The brand is to be discontinued later in its 2025/26 financial year
In a statement to Just Drinks, an AG Barr spokesperson said the brand had "struggled to compete" in recent years.
They noted the move to cease producing Strathmore could result in the closure of its manufacturing site in Forfar in Scotland, putting 23 jobs at risk.
'We believe we have now reached a point where the Forfar site is no longer sustainable,' the spokesperson said.
They added: 'The proposals are subject to consultation, and we intend to fully support our employees through this period of change.'
The move was announced alongside the release of AG Barr's latest results for its 2024/25 fiscal year, which ended on 25 January.
AG Barr, which produces the drinks brands Irn-Bru, Rubicon, Boost and Funkin, said 'current trading is in line with our expectations' and kept its annual outlook for the financial year 2025/26 'unchanged', forecasting continued revenue growth and margin improvement.
The scrapping of the Strathmore brand follows an 'organisational simplification' of the business which the company said was announced to staff in February. The move sees the integration of Barr Soft Drinks and the Funkin cocktails businesses into a 'unified AG Barr operation, streamlining activities and fostering synergies'.
In March last year, the business announced a round of redundancies affecting 160 roles as part of a shift from a direct-to-store delivery model to 'an enlarged and enhanced field sales operation'.
Around the same time, AG Barr also revealed plans to 'fully integrate' its Boost Drinks subsidiary into the Barr Soft Drinks division to remove 'duplicated activities'.
In its full-year fiscal period, AG Barr's revenue rose by 5.1% to £420.4m ($544.5m), driven by 'strong' performance in its soft drinks segment, particularly a 'standout performance' from Rubicon and 'continued strong growth' from Irn-Bru.
The business also reported a 6.5% increase in gross profit, at £164.3m, while operating profit was up 3.2% year on year to £51.7m. Profit before tax grew 3.7% to £53.2m.
Commenting on the company's results, AG Barr's newly appointed CEO Euan Sutherland, said: 'Looking forward, we have a refreshed strategy centred on growth and are committed to our long-term financial targets. I am confident that successful execution of our plans will see another year of positive progress towards our long-term goals."

United Natural Foods cyberattack disrupts services and systems
US grocery wholesaler and retailer United Natural Foods (UNFI) has taken 'certain systems' offline following a cyberattack. In a stock-exchange filing, UNFI said it had detected 'unauthorised activity' on 'certain' IT systems on 5 June. The company said it 'promptly' responded by implementing containment measures, including 'proactively taking certain systems offline', which has temporarily affected its ability to fulfil customer orders. The incident has led to 'temporary disruptions' in UNFI's business operations, it added. UNFI is among the largest wholesale distributors of food products throughout North America. It distributes branded and own-label products to more than 30,000 grocery stores, including Amazon-backed Whole Foods Market, as well as independent retailers. A Whole Foods spokesperson told Just Drinks: "We are working to restock our shelves as quickly as possible and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused for customers." UNFI's food brands include Wild Harvest, Culinary Circle, and Essential Everyday, covering natural, organic, and specialty food products. The group runs 76 retail stores under the Cub Foods and Shoppers chains but the wholesale business accounts for more than 95% of its annual revenue. The investigation into the impact and scope of the incident is still in its 'early stages', UNFI added. For the fiscal year ending 2 August, UNFI reported net sales of $30.98bn, a 2.3% increase from fiscal 2023. The 2024 fiscal year included 53 weeks, compared to 52 weeks in the prior year. Despite the sales growth, operating income fell sharply to $8m, a 93.3% decrease from the previous year. Announcing the results in October, UNFI attributed the decline primarily to increased operating expenses, restructuring, acquisition and integration-related costs, as well as losses on asset sales and charges. It booked a $112m net loss in fiscal 2024, compared with a $24m profit a year earlier. In January, the group set out plans to "realign" its commercial wholesale organisation into two "product-centred" divisions with "focused" sales teams. In March, UNFI reported half-year net sales of $16.1bn, up from $15.33bn in the corresponding period the year previous. It booked operating income of $32m – versus break-even in the first half of fiscal 2024/25 – and a net loss of $24m. UNFI had recorded a net loss of $54m in the first half of its previous financial year. The company is set to report its third-quarter results today. Arca Continental buys vending-machine firm
Mexico-based Coke bottler Arca Continental has struck a deal to snap up a vending business in the US. The company, a bottler for Coca-Cola in the Americas, is to buy Tulsa-based Imperial. The financial terms of the deal, announced in a brief filing on the Bolsa Mexicana de Valores, were not disclosed. According to the Imperial website, the company also supplies beverages to offices and on-site dining. Just Drinks has contacted Arca Continental for further comment. In March, the group said it was looking to bolster its production and distribution with 18bn ($883m) pesos of investment this year. Arca Continental is spending half the pot on its operations in its home market, with the rest 'primarily' in the US. At the time the business told Just Drinks is looking to open more distribution centres in Mexico and put investment into its factories in the US state of Texas. It said its investment plans for 2025 'primarily focus on our beverage business'. In 2024, Arca Continental generated net sales of 237bn pesos, up 10.9% year on year. Volumes dipped 0.3% to 2.47bn unit cases. Net income stood at 19.56bn, a rise of 11.8% on 2023. The company generates 46% of its net sales in Mexico. In its domestic market, net sales reached 110bn pesos last year, an increase of 9.6%. The Glenturret MD Jennie Baernreuther leaves
Jennie Baernreuther has stepped down as MD of The Glenturret after just over a year at the helm of the Scotch whisky distiller. Baernreuther joined the Crieff-based business in March 2024 following 17 years with Speciality Drinks Group. In a LinkedIn post, she wrote: 'As I finish up my role as managing director at The Glenturret, I am overwhelmed with gratitude, and pride. To be given the opportunity to lead this brilliant business, if even for a relatively short period of time in the long history of the brand, has been a privilege and honour. 'What I will miss most about The Glenturret is not the pretty location, Michelin star entertaining or even the delicious whisky, but the people who make the business so special.' Baernreuther said she is moving to the Cotswolds 'at the end of the summer', with plans to begin a new career chapter after a period of 'garden leave'. The Glenturret is jointly owned by Lalique Group and Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss. The two parties formed a 50/50 joint venture in 2019 after Lalique chairman Silvio Denz acquired the site from Edrington via his wine company Art & Terroir. The distillery, known for its single malts, has not yet named Baernreuther's successor. The company's product range also includes The Aberturret gin. Just Drinks approached The Glenturret and Lalique for comment. Among Lalique's other assets is the French wine estate Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey.
