Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 had more players on Steam than any Final Fantasy

Metro28-04-2025

After unanimous praise from critics, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has become one of the big surprise hits of the year.
It's easy to be pessimistic about the state of the games industry in 2025, between the glut of live service games and how so few people are actually playing new titles, so it's reassuring when games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 find success.
Developed by Sandfall Interactive, a team made of ex-Ubisoft devs, the French turn-based role-playing game is the debut title from the studio and an original IP. Better yet, as outlined in our review, it's pretty fantastic.
While critical acclaim doesn't guarantee sales success, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has got off to a strong start in that respect too.
As announced by Sandfall Interactive on X, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has sold 1 million copies after three days. The game launched across PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S on Thursday, April 24.
While the difference between copies sold and player counts is always a bit squiffy, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Shadows, an anticipated game from one of the biggest franchises, racked up two million players after two days – so for a new IP, Clair Obscur is doing very well indeed.
As noted by the developers, there is the caveat that this number doesn't include players on Xbox Game Pass, so the overall player count will be higher. 'This number includes units shipped to retailers, and does not encompass our awesome Game Pass players. Thank you all,' they added.
And here we are.Three days after launch. One million copies sold.Thank you for believing in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. pic.twitter.com/92T2qZxcHP — Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (@expedition33) April 27, 2025
The game's had a strong launch on Steam too. Over the weekend (via SteamDB), Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 hit a peak concurrent player count of 121,422.
While this isn't exactly Monster Hunter Wilds, or even Oblivion Remastered numbers, when compared to other role-playing games of the same ilk, like Metaphor ReFantazio (85,961) and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (40,564), it's pretty impressive.
In fact, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's concurrent player numbers on Steam are higher than any Final Fantasy game ever. The closest is Final Fantasy 14 Online, which hit a peak of 95,150 in 2022. More Trending
While the majority of the Final Fantasy games came to PC after launching on console, it's still a notable achievement for an original IP in the same Japanese role-playing mould.
This success practically guarantees a sequel, although it's still unclear what kind of budget was thrown behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Along with its impressive visuals, it features a pretty stacked English voice cast, including Daredevil's Charlie Cox and Andy Serkis from The Lord Of The Rings.
Whoever backed the studio, their risk has paid off since, as of right now, the game is also the best reviewed game of 2025 on Metacritic, beating Blue Prince and Split Fiction.

And in 2024, Microsoft's Xbox gaming boss Phil Spencer confirmed that the company was prototyping the machine. It would've lived alongside the plug-in-to-your-telly Xbox Series X as a more portable option for gamers. But a new report from Windows Central warns that Microsoft has "shifted priorities" and is pausing work on the gadget entirely. Instead, the report notes, Microsoft will pour its efforts into boosting Windows 11 gaming performance. That will help Microsoft boost the Asus partner gadget Project Kennan, which is a handheld gaming machine instead built by the Taiwanese tech giant. It notes that Microsoft would still like to produce a gaming handheld in the future, but is going to spend its time RIVAL MACHINES Microsoft will be feeling the pressure from gamers to compete with its industry rivals. The gaming giant is responsible for the virtual Steam store, which is one of the main ways PC gamers buy and play titles on their computers. Valve's Steam Deck lets players enjoy PC games on the go, and has been available since 2022. To fend off these rivals, Microsoft has partnered with Asus to help with its upcoming Project Kennan portable device. 5 Valve's Steam Deck is a hit with PC gamers looking to play titles on the move Credit: Valve / Steam This will be an official Xbox partnership, but it's not an in-house Microsoft product like the paused handheld machine would've been. Microsoft is still expected to release a major new at-home console in the next few years. This will be a sequel to the Xbox Series X, and could land in 2027 or 2028 – as a direct rival to the rumoured Sony PlayStation 6. Eamonn Holmes pleads with fans 'please think of me' after 'very sad' health update

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Eamonn Holmes has reached out to his fans for support after he gave an upsetting update about his well-being on social media. The 65-year-old ex-This Morning host, recently hospitalised after an incident while presenting the GB News Breakfast programme alongside Ellie Costello, asked his followers to 'think of him'. The mishap occurred when Eamonn tumbled off his chair during a live segment, while the camera was trained on their interviewee, political pundit Charlie Rowley. Off-camera, Ellie could be heard exclaiming "oh my gosh", and Eamonn urged Charlie to "carry on" before returning on-air after a commercial break. Following spinal surgery last year to address severe back pain from three herniated discs, the renowned presenter has been dedicated to his recovery. His mobility compromised over the past twelve months, he has had to rely on walking aids and occasionally a wheelchair. Just one week on from the chair incident at GB News, the esteemed journalist took to Instagram reminiscing about his fitter days. He shared an image sporting a sharp look with a white shirt, black trousers, co-ordinated tie, and a sleek black coat, posed as if he was about to present a news piece. In his post, Eamonn reflected: "This pic tells me this was 3 years ago in my Home City of Belfast. I was making a big extravaganza featuring The Ulster Orchestra and Film and TV music associated with famous producers," reports the Mirror. "It actually made me very sad looking at it because I could walk then and can't now . I pray to God and the new Docs that I am seeing that all will change and change soon . Keep you posted and please think of me." Supporters and friends were quick to share their well wishes, with one user commenting: "Hang in there. Am sure it's incredibly hard and dispiriting; but here's hoping that better days are to come." Another added: "This was my very first TV gig and it was such a special privilege to work with you Eamonn, you gave me amazing support and solid advice at working in the industry. Wishing you all the very best in your healing and thank you for being an inspiration. "I hope they can help you Eamonn. I'm recovering from spinal surgery. It's a long haul to recover but worth it. Sending positive thoughts for a good outcome for you," another said. After he fell off his chair on live television, he made light of the 'wonky wheels' at the studio. Following a commercial break, Eamonn quipped: "Welcome back. Good to see you again. Especially good for me to see you again. I am still alive, yes. "And they're very wonky wheels on chairs that we've got here, and matter of fact, we don't really like the chairs full stop, do we? They're a bit slippy and slidey and I've slipped and slid off mine there. "Not the first guest to have done so, we've had a few, they have to remain nameless because they're well known people, but they've hit the floor really badly, quite frightening. "And it was a bit of a shock for me because I've had a fall in my bathroom two weeks ago, which hospitalised me, and that hit me again right in the back. (I'm) really, really sore. Really sore."

Lingard, who used to be partially blamed for Man Utd's downturn, recently opened up about the crisis at his boyhood club where he spent 22 years. He revealed "life's good" in Korea and believes he has rapidly adapted to the different style of football. The United academy star also admitted to scoffing McDonalds and Papa Johns since moving to Korea.
