Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell dies at age 97, NASA says
Hollywood star Tom Hanks played Mr Lovell in director Ron Howard's acclaimed 1995 film. It recounted NASA's Apollo 13 mission, which was planned as humankind's third lunar landing but went horribly wrong when an onboard explosion on the way to the moon put the lives of the three astronauts in grave danger.
Mr Lovell and crew mates Jack Swigert and Fred Haise endured frigid, cramped conditions, dehydration and hunger for 3.5 days while concocting with Mission Control in Houston ingenious solutions to bring the crippled spacecraft safely back to Earth.
"A 'successful failure' describes exactly what (Apollo) 13 was - because it was a failure in its initial mission - nothing had really been accomplished," Mr Lovell told Reuters in 2010 in an interview marking the 40th anniversary of the flight.
The outcome, the former Navy test pilot said, was "a great success in the ability of people to take an almost-certain catastrophe and turn it into a successful recovery".
The Apollo 13 mission came nine months after Neil Armstrong had become the first person to walk on the moon when he took "one giant leap for mankind" during the Apollo 11 mission on 20 July, 1969.
There was drama even before Apollo 13's launch on 11 April, 1970. Days earlier, the backup lunar module pilot inadvertently exposed the crew to German measles but Mr Lovell and Mr Haise were immune to it. Ken Mattingly, the command module pilot, had no immunity to measles and was replaced at the last minute by rookie astronaut Mr Swigert.
The mission generally went smoothly for its first two days. But moments after the crew finished a TV broadcast showing how they lived in space, an exposed wire in a command module oxygen tank sparked an explosion that badly damaged the spacecraft 320,000 km from Earth. The accident not only ruined their chances of landing on the moon but imperiled their lives.
"Suddenly there's a 'hiss-bang. And the spacecraft rocks back and forth,'" Mr Lovell said in a 1999 NASA oral history interview.
"The lights come on and jets fire. And I looked at Haise to see if he knew what caused it. He had no idea. Looked at Jack Swigert. He had no idea. And then, of course, things started to happen."
'Houston, we have a problem'
Mr Swigert saw a warning light and told Mission Control: "Houston, we've had a problem here." In the movie, the line is instead attributed to Mr Lovell and famously delivered by Tom Hanks - slightly reworded - as: "Houston, we have a problem."
With a dangerous loss of power, the three astronauts abandoned the command module and went to the lunar module - designed for two men to land on the moon. They used it as a lifeboat for a harrowing 3.5 day return to Earth.
The astronauts and the US space agency experts in Houston scrambled to figure out how to get the crew safely home with a limited amount of equipment at their disposal.
Electrical systems were turned off to save energy, sending temperatures plummeting to near freezing. Water was drastically rationed, food was short and sleep was nearly impossible. The crew had to contrive a filter system to remove high levels of carbon dioxide that could have proven deadly.
"The thought crossed our mind that we were in deep trouble. But we never dwelled on it," Mr Lovell said in the NASA interview.
"We never admitted to ourselves that, 'Hey, we're not going to make it.' Well, only one time - when Fred looked at ... the lunar module and found out we had about 45 hours worth of power and we were 90 hours from home."
People worldwide were captivated by the events unfolding in space - and got a happy ending. The astronauts altered course to fly a single time around the moon and back to Earth, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean near Samoa on 17 April, 1970.
Mr Lovell never got another chance to walk on the moon after Apollo 13, which was his fourth and final space trip.
His first trip had been the Gemini 7 mission in 1965, featuring the first link-up of two manned spacecraft. His second was Gemini 12 in 1966, the last of the programs that led to the Apollo moon missions.
Mr Lovell's third mission was Apollo 8 in December 1968, the first to orbit the moon. During a telecast to Earth from their spacecraft on Christmas Eve, Mr Lovell and crew mates Frank Borman and William Anders read verses from the Bible's Book of Genesis.
Mr Lovell, who later had a moon crater named in his honor, retired as an astronaut in 1973, working first for a harbour towing company and then in telecommunications.
He co-authored a 1994 book, 'Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13,' that became the basis for Mr Howard's film. Mr Lovell recalled a meeting with Mr Howard in which the director asked the astronaut which actor he would want to play him.
"I said, 'Kevin Costner,'" Mr Lovell said. "And Hanks never lets me forget that... But Hanks did a great job."
Mr Lovell made a cameo appearance in the film as the commander of the US Navy ship that retrieves the astronauts and shakes hands with Mr Hanks.
James Lovell was born in Cleveland on 25 March, 1928. He was just five when his father died and his mother moved the family to Milwaukee. He became interested in space as a teenager. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1952 and became a test pilot before being selected as a NASA astronaut in 1962.

‘I could have changed the course of US history had I accepted Donald Trump's offer of a dinner date,' says actor Emma Thompson
The 66-year-old Love Actually actor recalled that the incident occurred while she was filming the 1998 political comedy Primary Colors, which was loosely based on Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign. Speaking at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, she said: 'A phone rang in my trailer, and it was Donald Trump. 'I thought it was a joke, 'Hi, it's Donald Trump here.' I said, 'How can I help you?' I thought he needed directions. He said, 'I would love for you to stay in one of my beautiful places, and maybe we could have dinner.'' Thompson at that point had been going through a lengthy divorce from her first husband, Belfast actor Kenneth Branagh. 'I realised that on that very day my divorce has finally come through,' she added. 'I bet he has people looking all over for suitable people he could take out, for all these nice divorcees – I mean, he found the number of my trailer. That's stalking. So yes, I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump. I could have changed the course of American history.' She previously shared the anecdote in 2017, telling Swedish TV host Fredrik Skavlan: 'I didn't know what to do with myself. I was on my own and I just said, 'OK, well, I'll get back to you. Thank you so much for ringing.'' Skavlan joked: 'You could be the First Lady. You could have stopped him,' Thompson said at the time that she had still not met Trump in person. The Nanny McPhee star has been married to actor Greg Wise since 2003. They first met while they were filming Sense and Sensibility in 1995.

From Zendaya to JoJo Siwa & Olivia Rodrigo… why American girls simply can't resist a British boy
Find out which seven British men have proved irresistible to US celebs FORGET Labubu dolls or Dubai chocolate, there is one must-have item on every American starlet's wishlist this summer – a hot British boyfriend. Just ask the famous faces who have been descending on our shores and picking up a home-grown lad as a souvenir. 8 Heiress Nicola Peltz only has eyes for Brit nepo baby Brooklyn Beckham Credit: Instagram Whether it's the accent or not, Englishmen are certainly having a moment. Globally, Google searches for 'British men' went up 21 per cent over the past year. And according to dating site 65 per cent of its 108,000 members are American women. Meanwhile, US director Lena Dunham's new semi-autobiographical Netflix drama, Too Much, tells the story of a New York woman who moves to London following a break-up and falls for an English musician. READ MORE ON CELEBRITY DATING ROCK IN THE PARK Zendaya flashes £200k engagement ring on London dog walk with Tom Actress Lena married British composer Luis Felber in 2021 after also moving across the pond. Just a few of the stars following in her footsteps and bagging a Brit hunk are singer Olivia Rodrigo, actress Zendaya, and billionaire heiress Nicola Peltz, who earlier this month renewed her wedding vows with Brooklyn Beckham. More recently, Love Island UK's first transatlantic winner Toni Laites admitted that she sees 'no reason to be in America any more' after falling for East London lad Cach Mercer on the ITV show. Here are seven of the British men who have proved irresistible to US celebs. Tom Holland opens up about 'one day becoming a dad' as GMA shares sweet photo of star with girlfriend Zendaya Louis Partridge and Olivia Rodrigo 8 US singer Olivia Rodrigo has fallen for Brit actor Louis Partridge Credit: Getty TAKING to the stage at Glastonbury in June, Drivers License singer Olivia made her allegiances known. 'I love England so much,' the Californian told the 120,000-strong crowd. 'I love how nobody judges you for having a pint at noon. I love English sweets… and, as luck would have it, I love English boys.' Specifically, she loves one English boy – actor Louis Partridge. The pair, both 22, first sparked romance rumours in October 2023, when they were pictured with their arms around the other's waist in London. They then made their red carpet debut as a couple at the Venice Film Festival in August 2024, where Louis was promoting his TV series, Disclaimer. The pair have more recently been spotted together at Wimbledon. They have mostly remained coy about their relationship, with Londoner Louis telling British Vogue last year: 'Dating probably shouldn't be done in the public eye… I think she's got tons and tons of eyes on her case.' So Olivia's very public tribute to the Enola Holmes star on stage at the Worthy Farm festival is testament to their strong feelings. Tom Holland and Zendaya 8 Zendaya has moved from California to London to be with Brit Tom Holland Credit: Getty ONE of our most famous transatlantic couples, Tom and Zendaya got engaged earlier this year, with the British actor proposing with a £200,000 ring. Since meeting Tom, 29, on the set of Spider-Man in 2016, Zendaya, 28, has proved herself to be a true anglophile. She has moved from California to Richmond, South West London, where the pair reside in a £3million mansion close to where he grew up. Residents are said to leave them alone and they are frequently spotted walking around Richmond Park. Last year Zendaya, 28, confirmed she is Tom's biggest fan, paying tribute to her man while promoting her own movie, Dune 2. 'I think someone who has beautiful charisma, not on the Dune cast, but personally works for me, is Mr Tom Holland,' she said, adding that 'he's great at just talking to people, getting to know people.' And last week Zendaya was spotted supporting Tom while he filmed scenes for their upcoming Spider-Man flick in Surrey. Matty Healy and Gabbriette Bechtel 8 Londoner Matty Healy is engaged to Californian Gabbriette HE did not receive a glowing review from his American ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift, who slammed him in songs The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived and I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can). But Londoner Matty's charms have fared better on Californian Gabbriette, 28. The 1975 frontman, 36, started dating the model in 2023 and they got engaged last year. But Gabbriette has revealed they are in no rush to wed. 'It might take a while because I'm bad at planning stuff,' she said last month. 'But the wedding bells are somewhere up there.' Meanwhile, the model has another fan in Matty's famous mum, Denise Welch. The Loose Women star recently appeared on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live! and took the opportunity to pay tribute to her future daughter-in-law, while also taking a subtle swipe at Taylor. 'Matty has taken it all in completely good grace,' she said. 'He's very happy with his amazing fiancée Gabbriette – who is gorgeous – so we've moved on.' Leo Woodall and Meghann Fahy 8 Meghann and Leo have a 'great deal in common' despite their hometowns being worlds away Credit: Getty AS co-stars on season two of The White Lotus in 2022, Meghann and Leo had their fair share of on-screen romance with other people. But it was not long until they only had eyes for each other – and after the private pair were spotted kissing in New York in 2023, they finally hard launched their relationship on social media in early 2024. Though her hometown of Massachusetts is worlds away from Leo's West London roots, Meghann, 35, has said they have a great deal in common – not least their high-profile careers. She revealed earlier this year: 'I think that it's just really great to be deeply understood… There's so many weird things about this industry and what we do, so I think there's just something really lovely about being with somebody who really gets that.' As for Leo, 28, he has called their relationship his 'safe space,' which leaves little confusion as to why, like Bridget Jones in the series' latest film, Meghann is Mad About The Boy. Harry Charles and Eve Jobs 8 Eve Jobs looked across the Atlantic to find her happy-ever-after with Team GB champion Harry Charles Credit: Instagram SHE is the American heiress who could have her pick of any fella in her home country. But Eve Jobs – the daughter of late Apple founder Steve – looked across the Atlantic to find her happy-ever-after with Team GB champion Harry Charles, 26. As an accomplished equestrian – once ranked the world's fifth best rider under-25 – it is no wonder Eve, 27, has fallen for the Olympic-gold showjumper, from Hampshire. The pair reportedly met due to their shared love of horses and started dating in 2022. They got engaged two years later, around the same time the former Tatler It Girl and model was cheering Harry on at the 2024 Paris Games. The couple wed last month in a lavish £5million wedding in the Cotswolds, with a celebrity guest list including former US Vice President Kamala Harris. Last week Eve shared their first official wedding portrait, telling her social media followers it had been 'the most magical week'. George Rollinson and Ashley Roberts 8 Ashley has been loved up with Brit artist and tattooist George since 2023 Credit: GC Images RADIO host Ashley made the UK her home many years ago, but she didn't initially commit to the British-boy assignment – famously dating Italian stallion Giovanni Pernice in 2018. The former Pussycat Doll, 43, has since discovered the local fare and has been loved up with artist and tattooist George, 25, since 2023. The pair went public in early 2024 and have posted snaps from holidays to Dubai and Italy, as well as their visit across the pond to see Ashley's family in Phoenix, Arizona. Ashley said last year: 'American men are overwhelming, they are too much. I'm like, you need to calm down.' And she is not the only Pussycat Doll singer to fall for a British man. Hawaiian Nicole Scherzinger, 47, is engaged to 40-year-old Scottish former rugby player Thom Evans. And Missouri-born Kimberly Wyatt has been married to singer Max Rogers, both 43, since 2014. Nathan Louis-Fernand and Rachel Zegler 8 Snow White actress Rachel is dating Londoner Nathan SHE is currently taking the West End by storm as the leading lady in musical Evita. But off-stage, Rachel is making sweet, sweet music with co-star and back-up dancer Nathan. The 24-year-old has temporarily relocated to London for the show – and it seems the New Jersey-born star is enjoying the local delights. The Snow White actress was pictured kissing Londoner Nathan, 27, last month at Sabrina Carpenter's headline gig at the BST Hyde Park Music Festival on July 6. In the weeks since, Rachel has posted snaps of Louis on her Instagram, including a blurry photo of them embracing one another and another of him kissing her cheek. The pair were also seen walking Rachel's dog in London's Primrose Hill two weeks ago, with Louis wrapping his arm around the actress.

Billy Loughnane takes first Group One win on Rebel's Romance
Irish jockey Billy Loughnane registered his first Group One victory when guiding globetrotting superstar Rebel's Romance to the Westminster 135th Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten. A firm favourite of trainer Charlie Appleby, the seven-year-old began his Group One haul in this very race back in 2022 and three years on he was back in the German capital to strike for the eighth time at the highest level. Keen to keep things simple, Rebel's Romance was up with the pace throughout the early stages, keeping close tabs on Andre Fabre's Junko and when straightening for home he showed his class to bravely hold off the French challenger. It was in fact a fourth Group One success on German soil for the well-travelled dual Breeders' Cup Turf hero who could return to Del Mar for another crack at the season-ending showpiece, with Coral making him the 5-1 co second-favourite for a third Stateside victory. Appleby said: "It's great for Billy, but more importantly great for the horse who keeps sparkling on all continents. "To have him carry on at the top level is fantastic for Sheikh Mohammed and I see this as a pre-cursor for the Canadian International at Woodbine and then the Breeders' Cup." Loughnane (19) has ridden eight winners from 12 rides for Appleby this season and it is fitting his first success at the top table comes in Germany, having notched his first Group-race triumph at Cologne in April last year. It caps a memorable weekend for his teenage pilot who also won the Sweet Solera Stakes in the royal blue of Appleby and Godolphin aboard Dance To The Music at Newmarket on Saturday. Loughnane told Wettstar: "This is a feeling I can't describe, it's a feeling of ecstasy, what a horse and I'm very lucky to be riding in these colours and riding a horse like this. "He's a star of a horse and has been going for a good few seasons now. Big thanks go to William Buick and I spoke to him last night and he told me exactly what to do. He's a superstar." Meanwhile, the 19-year-old's father Mark Loughnane was the proudest man on Wolverhampton racecourse having watched his son's finest hour from Dunstall Park. He told Sky Sports Racing: "Words can't describe something like that and it is something Billy has dreamt about all his life, it was amazing. "I had an even-money favourite in the first but I was more on my phone watching Billy and we can't thank Mr Appleby and George Boughey and people like that enough. His agent Tony Hind has done a super job and they've all really catapulted Billy to the next level but as a dad, I'm proud as punch. "When it was talked about he might be riding Rebel's Romance he rang me straight away and was like a child in a sweet shop and he said 'I'm on this horse of Mr Appleby's and it's going to be great'. I told him just to relax as a lot can happen between races. "I've spoken to him on the phone and he's absolutely elated. I was the first one on the phone and he's bouncing and for a young fellow, he's a super young man. What he's done in a short space of time, I've helped him get started, and now that's it off he goes. "It's awesome for our house and as a family, his mum is here racing today and we're all absolutely cock-a-hoop for him."
