Russian strikes kill 14, wound dozens in Kyiv

KYIV : A Russian attack on Ukraine killed at least 14 people and wounded dozens in the capital, authorities said today, with more wounded reported in the Odesa and Chernigiv regions.
Interior minister Igor Klymenko wrote on Telegram: '27 locations in different districts of the capital came under enemy fire tonight'.
He added that 'residential buildings, educational institutions and critical infrastructure facilities' had all been hit.
'The death toll has risen to 14 people. As of now, 44 people have been injured in Kyiv,' Klymenko said.
He added that six others had been injured in Odesa and another in Chernigiv.
Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko had earlier reported the death of a US citizen in a Russian attack on the capital's Solomyansky district.
'During the attack on Kyiv… a 62-year-old US citizen died in a house opposite to the place where medics were providing assistance to the injured,' Klitschko said on Telegram.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, slammed the new Russian strikes on 'residential buildings in Kyiv,' saying on Telegram that Moscow was 'continuing its war against civilians'.
Moscow has kept up its attacks on Ukraine despite efforts by the US to broker a ceasefire.
Talks have stalled.
Moscow has rejected the 'unconditional' truce demanded by Kyiv and its European allies, while Ukraine has dismissed Russia's demands as 'ultimatums'.
Yesterday, Zelensky had said he hoped to speak with his US counterpart Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit.
But the Ukrainian leader was expected to arrive at the G7 after the departure of the American president, who cut short his stay in the Canadian Rockies as Israel pounded Iran.

(EPA Images pic) SUAO : Taiwan sealed a partnership deal today with US and German-based Auterion for drone software battle-tested in Ukraine to help strengthen the island's defences against growing military threats from giant neighbour China. Auterion, whose software is used in Ukrainian drones operating combat missions against Russia, said the deal could eventually lead to the technology being used in millions of drones for Taiwan. China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory and has ramped up its military pressure over the past five years, including staging half a dozen rounds of war games. Taiwan's government rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Taiwan has been studying how Ukraine has deployed drones, both in the air and at sea, to successfully offset Russia's numerical advantage on the battlefield, given China's forces also outnumber Taiwan's. Auterion said it had agreed to a strategic partnership with Taiwan's defence ministry's research and development arm, the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, for uncrewed systems and drone swarming software. 'What we're bringing to the table has been combat-proven in Ukraine to deter aggression and destroy tanks, naval assets, and other really expensive equipment. So by building a large autonomous fleet, Taiwan can deter China,' Auterion's chief executive Lorenz Meier told Reuters. 'The partnership is super long-term. So I think in terms of, if you're trying to put that in number of drones or dollars, we're expecting millions of drones eventually over multiple years and hundreds of millions of dollars in value that's being created,' he added, speaking at a ministry-organised sea drone exhibition at the northeastern Taiwanese port of Suao. Pushed by the US, Taiwan has been working to transform its armed forces to be able to wage 'asymmetric warfare', using mobile and often cheaper weapons which still pack a targeted punch, like drones and truck-mounted missiles. Chung-Shan president Lee Shih-chiang thanked the five foreign companies who participated at the Suao exhibition. 'I believe that you will soon be sanctioned by the Chinese government, but do not fear, because you have chosen the democratic camp,' he added. Ukraine has deployed sea drones not only to attack ships in Russia's Black Sea fleet, but also to shoot down aircraft. The unmanned sea drones on display in Suao included not only those that could be packed with explosives for high-speed suicide missions, but smaller craft that can conduct low-profile reconnaissance.

KYIV: Russia fired scores of missiles and drones at Kyiv on Tuesday, killing at least 14 people and wounding dozens in what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called "one of the most horrific attacks" on the capital. The strike was one of the deadliest on Kyiv since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, and came as direct peace talks between the two sides appeared to stall. Zelenskyy said "an entire section of an apartment block" was destroyed and rescuers were searching under the rubble for possible survivors. AFP journalists heard drones flying over the city and explosions ringing out as Ukrainian air defence systems attempted to intercept the barrage. Dozens of residents took shelter in a metro station in central Kyiv, sleeping on mats, exchanging information on the drone and missile threat or reassuring pets, AFP journalists saw. Residents in Kyiv told AFP the attack was one of the strongest in recent memory. "It was probably the most hellish night in my memory for our neighbourhood," 20-year-old Ukrainian student Alina Shtompel told AFP. "It is indescribably painful that our people are going through this right now." Some 27 locations in Kyiv were hit, Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said. One person was also killed and 10 wounded in a strike on the southern port city of Odesa, while attacks on the Sumy and Kherson regions later in the day killed two others, authorities said.
