Vera's Brenda Blethyn lands role in 'striking' new historical comedy

Actress Brenda Blethyn is currently filming the reboot of A Woman of Substance but she will be working on another historical piece later this year
Brenda Blethyn has lined up a number of exciting TV projects since stepping down as iconic detective, DCI Vera Stanhope, in ITV's long-running crime drama Vera and among them is upcoming historical comedy, Fools.
Brenda stars alongside Karen Gillan and Jim Broadbent in the upcoming film, which explores the little-known story of Mary Tudor's friendship with her female court jester.

The news comes as the 79-year-old films the reboot of A Woman of Substance, which was previously a TV hit in 1984 and shot a young Jenny Seagrove to fame.

Fools is set in 1553 in the aftermath of Henry VIII's death, the period comedy follows England's first Queen, Mary I, as she takes the throne in the midst of a country on the brink of chaos.
A synopsis from Variety reads: "While the ambitious Cardinal Pole plots to secure control, he overlooks a humble court jester, Jane Foole."
It continues: ""The pious and apparently humourless queen finds Jane's brilliant slapstick routines uproariously funny, and they strike up a genuine friendship, the comedy lightening Mary's mood in the darkest of times, and helping fend off Pole's murderous manipulation. But can Jane's comedy save a nation from civil war?"
Directed by Guy Jenkin (Outnumbered) the cast is led by Doctor Who star Karen Gillan as Mary Tudor. She stars alongside Patsy Ferran (Hot Milk, Miss Austen) as the jester, and Jim Broadbent (Harry Potter, Moulin Rouge) as a scheming cardinal. Details about Brenda's character have yet to be revealed.
Guy said of the film: "I am thrilled to be working with such a supremely talented core group of actors on Fools. Together, we will tell the untold story of the strange friendship between England's first Queen, and her female jester. Fools will turn the conventions of a historical film inside-out, and promises to be subversive, striking and very funny."

Producer Ryan Bennett of PaperEpic Productions added: "With Fools, Guy has discovered a fascinating, hidden piece of history. This is a story where comedy actually saves lives. It's a defence of moderation, and a celebration of the power of laughter."
The film is set to be shot later this year, with a release date yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, Brenda has already been busy filming the reboot of the Emmy-nominated series, A Woman of Substance for Channel 4.
The series, based on the 1979 novel of the same name, chronicles the life of Emma Harte, a Yorkshire housemaid who rises to become a successful department store tycoon.

Frank Skinner claims there are 'lots of creepy men' working in TV 'making women's lives a misery' as he recalls getting vile cameraman sacked for filming up a female colleague's skirt

has claimed there are 'lots of creepy men' working in the TV industry who often make 'women's lives a misery'. The comedian, 68, recalled one particular incident in which he used his position on his chat show, which aired on both BBC and ITV from 1995 to 2005, to get a vile cameraman sacked after he filmed up a female colleague's skirt. He told The Sun: 'I think if you've got the power to do something about that, you need to use it', as he branded the incident 'horrible' and a form of 'bullying'. '[The cameraman] He thought it was funny to put the camera up a make-up woman's skirt and it got big laughs in the studio. I wasn't in the studio, but I found her crying in a room and she told me about it. 'I asked around. And because I was a big-time comedian, I was able to say: "Well, look, either he goes or I go". I don't want to get anyone sacked, but I did get him sacked. I tell that story not to make myself sound like some big hero and good guy, but just that I had the power and I did something'. Frank said that he believed that is how incident os misconduct should be bullied and found it 'baffling' how they often appear to go ignored. Meanwhile Christopher Biggins has shockingly admitted he would still like to be able to 'grab women by the t***ies' in a bizarre defence of Gregg Wallace. The iconic actor, 76, who is openly gay, said his own past behaviour would 'land him in prison' today and claimed 25 years ago 'everyone' was acting inappropriately. Gregg, 60, stepped down from his duties as Masterchef host after more than 40 complaints about his behaviour were upheld following a BBC investigation. Christopher, who appeared on the show's celebrity version in 2014, said he'd reached out to the scandal-plagued broadcaster following the axe, as well as sharing insight into his own less than savoury antics. He told The Sun: 'Years ago I would approach a woman from behind and grab her t***ies from the front. Well, I'm gay so it didn't matter. And I'd like to still be doing it, but I don't think I can any more. 'If I were to do that now I'd be put into prison. Twenty-five years ago we were all doing it. It was a thing of affection.' He went on: 'I love Gregg and I love his wife. I've tried to get hold of her because they must be going through a terrible time because suddenly careers are vanishing, it's so wrong.' Daily Mail have contacted Christopher Biggins' reps for further comment. No stranger to his own controversy, Christopher was famously axed from the Celebrity Big Brother back in 2016 after making a shocking comment to X Factor star Katie Waissel, which was never broadcast. Christopher told Katie, who is Jewish: 'You better be careful or they'll be putting you in a shower and taking you to a room.' Bosses immediately removed him from the house, and his £100,000 fee was reportedly slashed. Christopher has since apologised for his comments, noting that some of his close friends, such as Birds of a Feather's Lesley Joseph, were Jewish. The BBC review into Gregg's behaviour concluded that the 'majority of the substantiated allegations against him related to inappropriate sexual language and humour'. It added that 'a smaller number of allegations of other inappropriate language and being in a state of undress were also substantiated', with 'one incident of unwelcome physical contact' also substantiated. Australian-born chef co-host John Torode, 59, also lost his job after two decades over allegations that he used the N-word, which he claims to have 'absolutely no recollection' of. Gregg and John have returned to screens for one final time together as the BBC made the decision to air the controversial 21st series of MasterChef. It was filmed last year and remained shelved by the broadcaster until the findings of the independent investigation were gathered. The iconic actor, who is openly gay, said his own past behaviour would 'land him in prison' today and claimed 25 years ago 'everyone' was acting inappropriately (pictured on Celebrity Masterchef in 2014) Fans have been left divided over the move to air the programme, with some branding the decision as 'bizarre' and accused the BBC of being 'tone deaf'. There was a last-minute scramble behind-the-scenes to re-edit it and limit the appearances of John and Gregg. One contestant, Sarah Shafi, will not appear on the programme after she complained about the behaviour of Gregg. She claimed she was 'eyed up and ogled' by Gregg on the show, while accusing the TV host of making an 'off' comment about his reputation with women.

Huge TV star 'signs six-month Good Morning Britain deal' as ITV prepares major shake-up

Good Morning Britain star Richard Madeley has reportedly agreed to a short-term deal to stay on the ITV breakfast sofa as bosses prepare a cost-cutting overhaul. The veteran broadcaster, 69, has signed a six-month contract thought to begin in September, as part of a temporary arrangement while ITV reviews its presenter line-up. It comes ahead of a major reshuffle in January which is expected to see some familiar faces axed in a bid to save millions. A source told The Sun that Richard - one of the programme's best-known hosts - has not been offered a long-term commitment. They revealed: 'Richard is one of the biggest names on the show but even he hasn't been offered a long-term deal. 'He's signed for six more months and will then re-consider how the show looks. As things stand, almost every prominent face on the show is in talks. 'Some are going to go in the reshuffle, so it will depend on who rates well with focus groups and how much money each of them is insisting on.' It had previously been reported in May that Richard's position was under review before he reached a part-time agreement with bosses. The Daily Mail have contacted ITV and Richard Madeley's representatives for comment. ITV chiefs are said to be weighing presenter popularity in focus groups against salary demands as they decide who stays. Only lead anchor Susanna Reid, 54, is guaranteed a longer-term deal. Other regulars include Ed Balls, Robert Rinder and Kate Garraway, while Martin Lewis and other stand-ins rotate through the schedule. The shake-up comes as ITV embarks on a drastic restructure, with plans to halve the daytime workforce at ITV Studios. Bosses are also set to trim other shows, with Lorraine to be cut to just 30 minutes and broadcast for only 30 weeks a year. Only lead anchor Susanna Reid, 54, (pictured right) is guaranteed a longer-term deal The new regime, set to come into effect in January, will cost a potential 300 staff members their jobs as a consultation period begins, thought to last until September, before employees are finally let go in December. A source told The Sun: 'The tension is unbearable. There's a lot of rage towards This Morning, which everyone feels is constantly favoured despite it being the lame duck of the daytime flock. 'There's a feeling that Loose Women and Lorraine are delivering resilient, solid ratings while This Morning is always in the Press for its tumbling viewing figures. Loose Women is even winning awards. 'Never mind the Phillip Schofield scandal and then Holly Willoughby leaving, This Morning is like the black sheep and yet that's the show that is not facing any cuts. 'Everyone is absolutely furious that This Morning has got away with it yet again.' A source added that some of the older members of the ITV presenting teams are worried that bosses will favour younger stars for the roles that are left. Daily Mail contacted ITV for comment at the time. The changes

Maya Jama 'offered eight-figure deal to stay as Love Island host as ITV bosses make bid to keep her amid interest from rivals'

ITV bosses are reportedly pulling out all the stops to keep Love Island host Maya Jama with a mega deal worth almost £2million on the table. The TV favourite, 30, has become the jewel in the crown of the dating show since taking over in 2023, and executives are determined not to lose her to rivals such as Netflix and Amazon. Under the proposed deal, Maya would pocket more than £800,000 to front the flagship summer series, the same again for the winter All Stars version, plus a hefty sum for hosting After Sun. The presenter's mix of star power, wit and her jaw-dropping style is thought to have made her one of ITV's most bankable names. A source told The Sun: 'Maya is a massive hit with fans and bosses. ITV are desperate not to lose her. 'They're acutely aware that she's being offered lucrative work with other companies such as Netflix. She's hugely in demand.' The Daily Mail has contacted ITV and Maya's representatives. Bristol-born Maya, currently dating Manchester City ace Ruben Dias, 28, has been linked to a new Amazon Prime entertainment show, rumoured to come with a huge pay cheque. She's also branching into acting and has landed herself a role as a gangster's wife in Guy Ritchie's Netflix hit The Gentleman. Earlier this week, Maya thanked fans on Instagram after the summer finale. She said: 'Love island live final completed! What a night, what a b****y series. 'We are one of the few shows to do our finals live and I'm so grateful for the trust because it gives so much room for silliness and iconic moments, you truly never know what will happen and I had so much fun ❤️ 'A massive congratulations to our winners Toni & Cach you stole our hearts & to every islander for keeping us entertained in one of the most dramatic series yet, you the real MVPs. 'Thank you to everyone behind the scenes for working non stop & to everyone at home for watching, I love youuu' It comes after Maya won huge praise for her hosting skills during Monday night's Love Island final - with fans lauding the star on X. After the final, the star, who has fronted the show since 2022, took to the microblogging site to respond to the adoring viewers. Among the tweets, Maya was praised for one of her interviews and the fact she did not use cue cards - something she was glad had been spotted. The delighted fan penned: '[For real] @MayaJama eating this interview. No card in her hands too. #LoveIsland', to which she revealed a behind-the-scenes insight. Maya replied: 'Cutey! I pride myself on the no Que cards so thankyou for noticing'. Adding to her organic presenting style, the host also hit out at a fan who claimed she should be more unbiased, although she remained defiant in her stance - telling the follower to 'shut up' amid criticism of a tender moment. Maya was at the helm of the operation on Monday as she hosted the live final, which saw Toni Laites and Cach Mercer storm to victory. Among the tweets, Maya was praised for one of her interviews and the fact she did not use cue cards - something she was glad had been spotted It comes after Maya thanked everyone for allowing the final to be live as it allowed for 'silliness and iconic moments', adding that you never know what will happen The loved-up pair beat Shakira Khan, 22, and Harry Cooksley, 30, to the top spot, while Yasmin Pettet, 24, and Jamie Rhodes, 26, placed third, and Ty Isherwood, 23, and Angel Swift, 26, came fourth. A number of hilarious, dicey and awkward moments took place on the show, particularly during Maya's grillings of the stars. She was praised for her professionalism in the face of scandals. A stand-out moment in Maya's interviews was when Toni's ex Harrison Solomon, 22, rolled his eyes when she made a comment about his behaviour during the show. In her candid style, Maya pointed out: 'You did say that you learnt a lot being in here...' to which Toni said: 'That's for damn sure'.
