Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa) is poised to significantly bolster Abu Dhabi's burgeoning data and artificial intelligence hub, with its CEO and Managing Director announcing that total investments to support the power needs of the data centre industry in the emirate will exceed AED37 billion.
This announcement aligns with Taqa's broader strategy to provide clean, certified, and reliable energy for critical infrastructure.
Speaking to the Wam on the sidelines of the World Utilities Congress 2025, Taqa Group CEO and Managing Director Jasim Husain Thabet hlighted the company's robust growth and strategic acquisitions.
With a market capitalisation estimated at approximately AED360 billion, TAQA stands among the top five companies in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East for electricity generation, transmission, and water desalination, operating across 25 countries.
Over the past four years, TAQA has impressively doubled its electricity production capacity to 56 gigawatts, surpassing the total electricity consumption of the United Kingdom.
Recent strategic moves include the acquisition of an 875-megawatt gas-powered electricity station in Uzbekistan, in partnership with Mubadala, supporting Uzbekistan's energy transition and opening new Central Asian markets. Additionally, TAQA's acquisition of "Transmission Investment", a leading UK-based energy and utility investment platform.
Further enhancing its clean energy portfolio, TAQA is currently constructing a 1-gigawatt gas turbine power station.
In collaboration with Masdar, where TAQA holds a major stake, the company is also developing 5 gigawatts of solar energy backed by 19 gigawatt-hours of battery storage. This integrated solar and battery system, designed to deliver a continuous supply of 1 gigawatt for 24 hours, will be the largest project of its kind globally.
Taqa aims to invest AED75 billion by 2030 to triple its electricity generation capacity to 150 gigawatts, he said.

Emirates will expand its Damascus services to daily operations, effective October 26. The flights will open up new opportunities for travellers to conveniently connect to and from the airline's network of nearly 150 destinations and will support the UAE's efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and support Syrian aspirations to rebuild and attract foreign investment across key sectors such as energy, construction and agriculture, the airline said. Emirates customers flying to and from Damascus will also benefit from the airline's codeshare partnership with flydubai, which will complement its flight schedule and provide more options and convenience when flying in and out of the Syrian capital. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group said: 'Emirates is pleased to restart operations to Damascus and support Syria's road ahead by providing better choice and connectivity, essential economic links for inwards investment as well as opening new trade lanes and global market access for the country. "We would like to thank the Syrian authorities for their support in strengthening connectivity between Dubai and Damascus and look forward to boosting links to and from the country through our regularly scheduled operations.' The UAE and Syria's trade volumes reached $680 million (AED2.5 billion) in 2024, a 23% increase over the previous year, and the new flights will further stimulate vital trade ties. The UAE's thriving Syrian community of over 350,000 nationals have played an integral role in the UAE's prosperity, contributing through entrepreneurial ventures and skilled expertise while further enriching the country's vibrant cultural tapestry, it said. -TradeArabia News Service

RTA announces urban project to upgrade Umm Suqeim Street

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced an integrated urban project for the upgradation of Umm Suqeim Street, from its intersection with Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road. The project is designed to enhance traffic flow in support of the emirate's comprehensive development, address the demands of urban expansion and population growth, and to improve the overall quality of life for both residents and visitors. It complements works currently underway to upgrade Umm Suqeim Street from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Emirates Road, ultimately enabling uninterrupted traffic flow from Jumeirah to Al Qudra Road over a total distance of 20km. The project goes beyond traditional road widening and development by integrating creative and aesthetic enhancements into the surrounding urban landscape. It features upgraded pedestrian walkways, a dedicated cycling track, and complete streets (boulevards), alongside vibrant urban spaces designed to foster community interaction and create inclusive, dynamic environments, said RTA in a statement. It also establishes a direct link between Mall of the Emirates Metro Station and nearby residential communities through targeted improvements that ensure smooth, integrated, and seamless access between these areas and the metro. The project forms part of a master plan developed by RTA to upgrade the road network in the area, including enhancements to Jumeirah Street, Al Wasl Street , and Al Safa Street, details of which will be announced in due course, it stated. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said: "The upgrade of Umm Suqeim Street, from its intersection with Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road, forms part of a master plan to develop the Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra corridor. " "This strategic route extends from its intersections with Jumeirah Street throughout to its intersections with Emirates Road to Al Qudra Road, serving key residential and development zones with a combined population exceeding two million," he stated. "The project enhances connectivity across four strategic transport corridors in Dubai - Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. It will increase Umm Suqeim Street's capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, significantly improve traffic flow, and reduce travel time between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road from 20 minutes to just six," noted Al Tayer. "The upgraded corridor will directly serve vital residential and development areas, including Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Manara, Al Sufouh, Umm Al Sheif, Al Barsha, and Al Quoz; home to more than two million residents," he added. According to him, the project entails the upgrade of six key intersections along Umm Suqeim Street, specifically those with Jumeirah Street, Al Wasl Street, Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road. The scope of work includes the construction of four bridges and three tunnels, with a total combined length of 4,100m. "At the intersection with Jumeirah Street, a tunnel with two lanes in each direction will be constructed, complemented by a signalised surface-level junction," said Al Tayer.

Al Salam Bank announces sale of key stake in Seef Properties

Al Salam Bank, the largest Islamic bank in Bahrain, has announced the sale of its 15.6% shareholding in Seef Properties to GFH. The exit of Seef Properties forms part of a broader Group optimization strategy designed to expand and reinforce focus on core banking operations and the Group's strategic holdings in banking, takaful, and asset management. ASB Capital, the Group's asset management arm, was appointed by Al Salam Bank as sell-side advisor. Under this, ASB Capital's key role will be to assist in sourcing, structuring and executing the exit of its significant minority stake in Seef Properties. Launched earlier this year with a starting assets under management (AUM) of $4.5 billion, ASB Capital recently launched its investment banking offering covering advisory, transaction mandates, capital market solutions, and other bespoke offerings across various asset classes. On this transaction, Rafik Nayed, Group Chief Executive Officer of Al Salam Bank and Managing Director of ASB Capital, said: "This transaction represents our continued commitment to exit non-strategic holdings as part of a group-wide optimization initiative." "Aligned with our strategy, we are reallocating capital and focus towards growing core banking operations and expanding our strategic holdings in banking, takaful, and asset management- sectors that offer long term value and operational synergies within the context of the Group," he noted. Additionally, Nayed said: "ASB Capital's role in facilitating the transaction, despite global market volatility, underscores the strength of our expertise and execution capabilities in transaction advisory and capital markets."
