Five-star Paris Saint-Germain are champions of Europe
MUNICH: Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are European champions for the first time after a record-breaking 5-0 victory over Inter in the UEFA Champions League final played in Munich on Sunday night.
Luis Enrique-coached PSG are the 24th different champions in European Cup history and it was the second Champions League title for Enrique, having previously won with Barcelona.
Inter had trailed for only 17 minutes of their 14-game campaign prior to the final, but it did not take long for them to fall behind on this occasion.
Vitinha picked the first lock with a perfectly-weighted pass for Désiré Doué, who in turn showed silky skill to square for Hakimi to convert from close range against his former club.
Ousmane Dembélé provided the silver-service assist on 20 minutes, racing clear down the left before checking back on the edge of the penalty area to locate Doué.
The 19-year-old needed one touch with his chest to take control and another with his right foot to fire in a shot which deflected in off Federico Dimarco.
The Nerazzurri settled as the half wore on but had only off-target headers from Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram to show for their efforts.
Though there was renewed vigour from Simone Inzaghi's side after the break, it was Les Rouge-et-Bleu who once again had the creative and clinical edge. It was Vitinha's turn to drive decisively from midfield just after the hour, exchanging passes with Dembélé before sliding through for Doué to drill emphatically into the bottom right of the goal.
It was a different corner but the same result ten minutes later, Dembélé laying on his second assist of the night for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who fired low into the net.
Gianluigi Donnarumma pulled off a stunning save to keep out Thuram but there was still time for Senny Mayulu to apply the record-breaking flourish.
Mayulu, also 19, combined neatly with fellow replacement Bradley Barcola before smashing a powerful strike in off a post. Paris had secured the biggest-ever margin of victory in a European Cup final.
It was a commanding first-half performance morphed into one of blissful attacking endeavour in the second. An incisive, inspired showing from PSG, and one which makes history for more reasons than one.
Former England star Rio Ferdinand told TNT Sports after the match: "Paris dominated it – they suffocated them and pressed them. From the word go, they pressed the life out of them and they had players that were in killer mode today. It's an astonishing performance in a game of this magnitude. I don't think I've ever seen such dominance at this stage."
Key stats:
• Doué and Mayulu are only the third and fourth teenagers to score in a UEFA Champions League final, after Patrick Kluivert in 1995 and Carlos Alberto in 2004.
• No team had ever won a European Cup final by more than a four-goal margin prior to this.
• Doué is the first player to score twice in a final since Gareth Bale for Real Madrid against Liverpool in 2018, and the eighth to do so in the Champions League era.
• Luis Enrique is the seventh coach to win the European Cup with multiple teams, having also guided Barcelona to glory in 2015.
• Hakimi is the first Moroccan to score in a European Cup final.
• Paris have played 99 Champions League matches since they were involved in a 0-0 draw (vs Real Madrid, 2015/16 group stage).
• Inter had trailed for just 17 minutes of their entire 14-game campaign prior to the final.
• All four European Cup finals in Munich have produced a first-time winner.
What next:
PSG will take on UEFA Europa League winners Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup in Udine on Wednesday, 13 August.
The 2025/26 UEFA Champions League begins with the first qualifying round on 8/9 July; the draw takes place on Tuesday 17 June.
Both PSG and Inter will enter next season's competition in the league phase, the draw for which takes place on 28 August.

PSG: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Nuno Mendes (Hernández 78); João Neves (Zaïre-Emery 84), Vitinha, Fabián Ruiz (Mayulu 84); Kvaratskhelia (Gonçalo Ramos 84), Dembélé, Doué (Barcola 66)

Pyramids beat Sundowns to win 1st CAF title
JOHANNESBURG: Pyramids of Egypt survived late pressure to beat Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa 2-1 in Cairo on Sunday and win the CAF Champions League for the first time. Competing in the premier African club competition for only the second time, Pyramids triumphed 3-2 on aggregate after the first leg was drawn 1-1 in Pretoria last weekend. Fiston Mayele scored after 23 minutes and Ahmed Samy on 56 minutes for the Egyptian outfit before Iqraam Rayners reduced the arrears in the 75th minute. Listless for much of the match, Sundowns pressed in the closing stages, but the second goal that would have given them overall victory on away goals proved elusive. Pleas by Pyramids, who normally attract crowds of just a few thousand, for support led to their 30,000-seat stadium being about half full for the second leg. Both clubs made one change to the first-leg starting line-ups last weekend in Pretoria, where Walid el Karti headed an added-time equaliser after Lucas Ribeiro gave Sundowns an early second half lead. Pyramids coach Krunoslav Jurcic, a former Croatia midfielder, dropped forward Ibrahim Adel, scorer of six goals en route to the final, and promoted ex-English Premier League forward Ramadan Sobhi. Sundowns' Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso left out Brazilian forward Arthur Sales and gave a starting place to midfielder Jayden Adams. Cardoso is only the second coach after Argentine Oscar Fullone to reach consecutive Champions League finals with different clubs. Fullone, who died in 2017 aged 78, guided ASEC Mimosas of the Ivory Coast in 1998 and Raja Casablanca of Morocco the following year to victory in finals of the premier African club competition. MAYELE SCORES Cardoso took Esperance of Tunisia to the 2024 final, which they lost to Al Ahly of Egypt with an own goal separating the sides. A new Champions League trophy, unveiled before the first leg, was brought to the touchline at the 30 June Stadium by 48-year-old Nigerian legend and former Inter Milan and Arsenal star Nwankwo Kanu. On a warm, windy first day, both teams constantly surrendered possession cheaply before Pyramids took the lead when Mayele scored his ninth goal of the African campaign. A cross by Ahmed Atef was partially cleared by Grant Kekana and Mayele pounced to slam a snap low shot across goalkeeper Ronwen Williams into the far corner of the net. Tensions rose and the Somali referee yellow-carded Atef and Aubrey Modiba after the duo had an angry clash, leading with their heads. Sundowns squandered a great chance in first half added time when Tashreeq Matthews broke through only to see his shot parried by the left leg of goalkeeper Ahmed el Shenawy. It was the only time the Pretoria outfit threatened in the opening half despite having much more possession. Pyramids struck again when Mohamed Chibi placed a free kick into the goalmouth and central defender Samy headed powerfully into the net. It was the first goal for Samy in the 16-match Champions League campaign and he became the 19th Pyramids player to score in the competition this season. Sundowns replied when a weak headed clearance offered Rayners a chance and he fired past El Shenawy from close range. — AFP

Griezmann to stay with Atletico Madrid until 2027
MADRID: France's 2018 World Cup winning forward Antoine Griezmann has extended his Atletico Madrid contract until 2027, the Spanish club announced on Monday. "Griezmann and Atletico have reached a deal to renew the French footballer's contract until June 30, 2027," said Atletico in a statement. Griezmann, 34, is Atletico's all-time top scorer with 197 goals over two spells at the club and his previous deal was due to run until 2026. The veteran forward has struggled for form in 2025, last finding the net in February as his team finished third in La Liga, ending the season trophyless. Griezmann, who scored in France's 2018 World Cup win over Croatia, signed for Atletico from Real Sociedad in 2014. The striker, who retired from international football last year, won the Europa League in 2018 and twice finished a Champions League runner-up with Atletico, before joining Barcelona in 2019. Griezmann struggled with the Catalan giants, winning only a Copa del Rey before returning to Atletico on loan in 2021, eventually making the switch permanent. Atletico and Griezmann will compete at the Club World Cup this summer in the United States, with their first match against Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain on June 15. — AFP

"Enthusiasm in Europe to enter into Free Trade Agreement with India": Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal
Paris: Highlighting growing global confidence in India's economic prospects, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Sunday said there is strong enthusiasm in Europe to enter into a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India. Speaking to ANI during his ongoing visit to Paris, France, Goyal noted that India's rising reputation has made nations increasingly eager to deepen trade and diplomatic ties. He also noted the positive momentum following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in New Delhi earlier this year. "There is no time limit for these discussions, but the European Union President, Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Modi had a meeting in New Delhi in February. It was decided that we should conclude a good Free Trade Agreement by the end of this year. Considering the relations that I have built with my counterpart, the European Union Trade Commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, I feel that we will progress very fast and take it forward soon. There is enthusiasm in Europe to enter into a Free Trade Agreement with India, and from the feedback we get from the industry in India, it seems India will also benefit from this," Goyal said, adding that when both will benefit, it is natural that it is our responsibility to do it quickly. Earlier, while speaking to the media in Paris, Goyal also expressed gratitude towards France for its support following the terror attack in Pahalgam. "India is very grateful to France for the strong support and solidarity expressed when there was a terror strike at Pahalgam. The French people and government also stand for zero tolerance against terrorism, just like India," he said. He emphasised the strong personal rapport between PM Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, which he said had given "fresh momentum" to the robust Indo-French relationship. "The French Senate delegation that visited India fully supported India's stand and gave us confidence that the world stands with India when we are fighting against terrorism in all forms, whether state-sponsored or non-state actors. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Macron share a very deep personal connect and rapport and have had frequent interactions, giving afresh momentum to the strong French-India ties..." he said. The commerce minister commenced his three-day official visit to France on Sunday, part of his ongoing visit to France and Italy from June 1 to 5. As part of his visit, Goyal will hold bilateral meetings with several French leaders, including Minister of Economy Eric Lombard and Trade Minister Laurent Saint-Martin. The discussions will focus on strengthening the Indo-French economic partnership and exploring new avenues for enhancing trade and investment cooperation. As part of the high-level visit to France, a comprehensive agenda of strategic business meetings and engagements has been scheduled. With top leadership of major French companies such as Vicat, Total Energies, L'Oreal, Renault, Valeo, EDF, and ATR, the visit will feature the India-France Business Round Table and the India-France CEO Forum, fostering dialogue between leading industry stakeholders from both countries. During his stay, the Minister will also participate in the informal gathering of WTO Ministers on the margins of the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting. At this crucial forum, he will engage with global counterparts on key multilateral trade issues and articulate India's perspectives and priorities.
