Govt sets up high-level panel to examine causes of Ahmedabad plane crash: Civil Aviation Min
New Delhi, A high-level panel has been set up to investigate the causes of the Ahmedabad plane crash and the investigation is progressing smoothly, the government said on Saturday.
The black box of Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane that crashed on Thursday was recovered from the site on Friday evening.
"Decoding of the black box is going to give in-depth insight into what happened moments before the plane crash," Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said at a briefing in the national capital.
Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, operating a flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed soon after the take-off on Thursday afternoon. Out of the 242 people on board the plane, only one person survived.
The minister said the country has very strict aviation safety standards and robust protocols, and everything will be done to further improve safety.
"Any theory going around the plane crash will be analysed," he added.
A high-level multi-disciplinary panel, chaired by the home secretary, will hold a meeting on Monday, and the committee is expected to submit its report in three months.
Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha said the investigation is going on smoothly into the Air India plane crash.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is probing the crash.
Before the press conference, a one-minute silence was observed to pay homage to the victims of the Air India plane crash.
He said that DNA testing is happening to identify victims and hand them over to their families.
"The Gujarat government is coordinating with that. They have been there on the ground since the time of the crash and they have been facilitating all the efforts and measures that are required from their side, so once the DNA testing is confirmed, the bodies will be given to the respective families," the minister said.
"We are hoping that the process also gets as soon as possible," Naidu added.
"We have very strict safety standards in the country also, and many, including the ICAO, international organisations have also time and again established that we do have a very strict protocol, robust protocol which we follow every time."
But even after that, when the incident happened, we also felt that there is a need to do an extended surveillance into the Boeing 787 series, Naidu said, adding, "So, through the DGCA, we have also given the order to do the extended surveillance for the 787 planes".
There are 34 Boeing 787-8 in the Indian aircraft fleet today and "I believe that eight have already been inspected," the minister said.
He said that whatever necessary steps are needed will be taken to improve the safety.
On the formation of the high-level committee, the minister said its composition involves three persons from various backgrounds, and people, who the government feels, can bring a lot of expertise and value to it, will investigate in a holistic way into the incident.
"We have put a time limit of three months for them to sit down, talk to various stakeholders, and involve and discuss with any other important expert that is necessary as part of their investigation," he noted.
He said the AAIB team believes that "the decoding of the black box is going to give in-depth insight into what would have actually happened during the process of the crash or moments before the crash itself".
"So, we are also eagerly waiting for the report's results, " Naidu said.

Expressing his deepest condolences to all the families who have lost their loved ones in the plane crash in Ahmedabad, Naidu said, "...to a certain extent, I can understand the pain and anguish that the family members are feeling".
"I would like to reiterate that this was a very tragic incident, a very horrific incident for everyone," he said.

Alcohol industry asks Maharashtra govt to rethink excise duty hike, calls for deliberations
Expressing concern over the increase in the excise duty on Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) by up to 50 per cent by the Maharashtra government, the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC), the apex body of the Indian Alcoholic Beverage Industry, has urged the state government to reconsider the hike and hold deliberations with all stakeholders immediately. Sources in the excise department said the industry body was trying to protect its interest, but declined to comment on any possibility of a rollback. The state cabinet on Tuesday approved a hike in excise duty on IMFL, country liquor, and imported alcohol. The decision is expected to raise the state's annual excise collection by approximately Rs 14,000 crore as the prices of IMFL and premium foreign liquor brands are likely to increase by 50-80 per cent. The CIABC claimed that while the intent behind the proposed hike may be to enhance revenue collections by Rs 14,000 crore, the actual outcome may be contrary–driven by declining sales, rising illicit trade, and border leakages. The long-term impact could be deeply detrimental, not only for industry and employment, but also for public safety and overall state revenues. Stating that the CIABC had already written to the Maharashtra government urging it to start a consultative process with all stakeholders before releasing any final gazette notification, Anant S Iyer, Director-General, CIABC, said the hike in excise duty was projected to push maximum retail prices up by as much as 85 per cent, a step that could severely disrupt the market, erode the competitiveness of national brands, and jeopardise the availability of legitimate alcoholic beverages in the state. 'Such an unprecedented escalation in duties poses a serious deterrence to consumer access of established and reputed brands, compelling a shift toward lower-category products. This poses a serious threat to the stability of the IMFL industry in the state…such a move will have a far-reaching adverse impact,' Iyer said. He warned that higher MRPs often create a vacuum filled by illegal operators. The IMFL industry contributes approximately 60 per cent of the total excise revenue of the state.

Zero tolerance to corruption, asserts CM Chandrababu Naidu
VIJAYAWADA: Making it clear that corruption at any level, in any department, and by anyone will not be tolerated, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to build an administration focused on zero corruption. He underscored the need to identify areas where corruption is taking place, conduct inquiries, and take immediate action if allegations are proved. Holding a meeting with the officials at his camp office in Undavalli on Saturday, the Chief Minister reviewed the feedback received from the public over the past year regarding welfare schemes and development programmes. He instructed that a technical audit be conducted on the survey process, and steps be taken to improve satisfaction in areas with low feedback. He sought the details of how many people secured jobs through initiatives like work-from-home, investment inflow, and skill development. Besides directing the officials to hold job melas in all 175 Assembly segments, he said all government services should be made available via WhatsApp Governance through the 'Mana Mitra' platform by August 15.
