Customs foil KLIA drug smuggling, RM2.6m seized
SHAH ALAM: The Royal Malaysia Customs Department (Customs) foiled four drug smuggling attempts and seized 22,348 grams (g) of drugs worth RM2.61 million from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Pos Malaysia Mail and Courier Centre in April.
Selangor Customs director Tun Norlela Azumi Ramli said the first seizure involved an export courier box containing 2,609 g of cannabis worth RM193,943 on April 18, while the second seizure occurred when Selangor Customs inspected two courier boxes on April 28 containing 8,935 g of cannabis flowers worth RM905,618.
The third seizure occurred on April 29, with 7,344 g of cannabis flowers worth RM719,712 seized and the fourth seizure involved 4,000 g of methamphetamine worth RM800,000 found in two courier boxes on the same day.
She said that the syndicate behind the smuggling also made false declarations about the courier boxes.
The seized drugs have been taken to the North Port Customs Office for further investigation and the cases are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Local councillor charged with raping woman at laundrette
KOTA BARU: A local authority councillor was charged at the Sessions Court here today with raping a 29-year-old woman late last month. Muhammad Jaya Murugan Abdullah, 47, was charged before judge Zulkifli Abdullah under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code with rape, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and whipping, upon conviction. Kuala Krai District Council member pleads not guilty to rape charge
KOTA BHARU: A Kuala Krai District Council member pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of raping a 29-year-old woman who was also his employee. The accused Muhammad Jaya Murugan Abdullah, 47, made the plea after the charge was read before Judge Zulkifli Abdullah. According to the charge, the alleged offence took place at a laundromat, Nikiysa 1909 Laundry, at PT 2430, Jalan KCP 2, Krai Central Park, at 2 pm on May 29. He is charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction. Lawyer Ariff Azami Hussein, representing the accused, applied for bail on the grounds that his client has no prior criminal record, is a community leader within the local Indian population, and is active in business and social initiatives. 'The accused has 12 children, including two stepchildren, and is currently supporting 10 who are still in school. The proposed surety is his biological brother, who works as a plantation manager. Our client is also willing to report regularly to the police station,' the lawyer said. However, deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli objected to the bail application, citing the seriousness of the charge, and proposed a bail sum of RM30,000 along with additional conditions.
