Nissan launches new Leaf in push to revive its electric mojo

TOKYO (Reuters) -Nissan is betting on a new version of its Leaf electric vehicle (EV) to revive its fortunes, having gone from mass-market EV pioneer to laggard since its first model entered showrooms in 2010.
The Japanese carmaker's third-generation Leaf was launched on Tuesday and will go on sale in the United States in the autumn, with other regions to follow. But its success is far from certain in the face of significant obstacles.
The cars sold in the U.S. will be made at Nissan's factory in Tochigi, Japan, and therefore subject to tariffs. EV demand in the U.S., meanwhile, has cooled as customers clamour for hybrids, which Nissan still does not offer in America.
"There is a high possibility that this is going on sale at the worst possible time, given the imposition of tariffs and the Trump administration's rollback of EV subsidies," said Koji Endo at SBI Securities.
"If the new Leaf doesn't sell, it will mean big trouble for Nissan."
The price of the new Leaf has yet to be announced, but the previous hatchback styling has been overhauled as a crossover with battery capacity up to 25% more than the previous version. Nissan estimates a maximum range of up to 303 miles in the U.S. with its 75 kWh battery.
Even with the tariffs, the U.S. price will be competitive, a Nissan spokesperson said.
It is difficult to understate the Leaf's symbolic importance to Nissan.
It was the world's best-selling EV for years until it was overtaken by Tesla. Introduced by the now-disgraced Carlos Ghosn, it heralded Nissan's desire to play a big role in the electric future. Despite the company's troubles in recent years, it has sold almost 700,000 Leaf vehicles.
Chief Executive Ivan Espinosa now faces the difficult task of delivering much-needed cost cuts while continuing to invest in development of new vehicles to refresh its ageing line-up and lack of hybrids in the United States.
Espinosa has laid out plans for big cuts, including seven plant closures and 11,000 jobs. That will bring staff cuts to about 20,000, including those announced by his predecessor last year.
Nissan reported a net loss of about $4.5 billion in the past financial year and faces 596 billion yen ($4.1 billion) in debt due next year.
The new Leaf will also be made at the Sunderland factory in Britain. The Tochigi and Sunderland plants are not expected to be among the closures, though the Oppama factory where the Leaf was first made could be axed.

What New ‘Big Beautiful Bill' Proposals Mean for Medicaid, SALT

Senate Republicans have revealed new proposals to modify President Donald Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill," which would result in further changes being made to Medicaid, and a lower deduction of state and local taxes (SALT). On Monday, the GOP unveiled its recommended adjustments to Trump's bill, which included having work requirements for Medicaid enrollees who are parents of teens, and changing a previously updated $40,000 cap for SALT back to its current $10,000 deduction. The proposed changes have reportedly angered a number of House Representatives, according to Reuters, and lawmakers' opposing views on the legislation could make passing Trump's bill more complicated as the self-set deadline in July draws closer. Potential changes to the Medicaid system under Trump's bill have been sparking significant concern in recent months, such as the rolling back of Affordable Care Act (ACA) expansions and implementing work requirements. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated that as many as 13.7 million Americans would be left without health coverage by 2034 because of various new policies being brought in to transform the federal program. Meanwhile, the SALT cap deduction allows taxpayers who itemize when filing federal taxes to deduct certain taxes paid to state and local governments, which the 2018 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) capped at $10,000 per year for those filing jointly and $5,000 for single filers. This includes property taxes plus state income or sales taxes, but not both, according to the Tax Foundation. The proposals enhance the changes being made to Medicaid eligibility, which are being implemented as a major part of the legislation's cost-saving strategy. Previously, the House had exempted parents of dependents from Medicaid work requirements, but Senate Republicans are pushing for parents of children older than 14 to still fulfill the new expectations, of working a minimum of 80 hours a month. Work requirements have been divisive in both the House and Senate. Critics warn they will substantially weaken the Medicaid system, the largest public health insurance program in the country, by forcing millions off the service, while supporters of the plan argue that work requirements foster employment, reduce fraudulent claims, and improve personal responsibility. Senate Republicans are also proposing to maintain the $10,000 deduction cap, but that the amount is subject to continuing negotiations. This suggestion has allegedly drawn significant hit-back from House Republicans whose constituents would have benefited from the higher deduction, Reuters reported. "We have been crystal clear that the SALT deal we negotiated in good faith with the Speaker and the White House must remain in the final bill," the co-chairs of the House SALT caucus, Republican Representatives Young Kim and Andrew Garbarino said in a joint statement Monday. Republican Representative Nicole Malliotakis of New York posted on X, formerly Twitter, that the $10,000 cap in the Senate bill was not only insulting, but a "slap in the face to the Republican districts that delivered our majority and trifecta" with the White House. U.S. Senator for Maryland Chris Van Hollen wrote in a post on X: "The House version of Trump's so-called "Big, Beautiful Bill" cut $800B from Medicaid—and the Senate version is even worse. There's nothing "beautiful" about kicking millions off their health care. And to pay for billionaire tax cuts? We must fight this with everything we've got." U.S. Senator for Massachusetts Elizabeth Warren, wrote in a post on X: "House Republicans voted to kick 16 MILLION people off their healthcare. Today, Senate Republicans proposed BIGGER CUTS to Medicaid, just to fund bigger tax cuts for giant corporations. Call your senator." Republicans plan to bring the bill to a committee vote in the coming weeks, with a current scheduled deadline of July 4. This article contains reporting from The Associated Press. New Nissan Leaf mantra: ‘Efficiency, efficiency, efficiency' for 300-mile range

YOKOHAMA, Japan — Nissan's mantra for the redesigned third-generation 2026 Leaf electric vehicle is 'efficiency, efficiency, efficiency.' Engineers used a host of tricks to boost the maximum driving range about 40 percent to 303 miles (487 kilometers), giving fresh legs to the car that pioneered the affordable EV segment 15 years ago. When the new Leaf lands in the U.S. and Canada this autumn, new technologies will run the gamut from brawnier batteries and a miniaturized motor unit to smarter heat management. Even the Leaf's more fetching crossover-styled silhouette pursues better efficiency. Future Product Find our what powertrains, redesigns and freshenings are planned for the next four years. View the list Brand future product timelines Overhauled aerodynamics split the air with a slick 0.26 drag coefficient, improving on the 0.29 of the frumpy outgoing second-generation Leaf hatchback. The Leaf gets even better aero marks in Europe with a drag coefficient 0.25, thanks partly to skinnier tires used in that market. Under the sheet metal, a new 'big module' battery approach crams more cells into the battery pack, improving energy density 17 percent. And a new three-in-one packaging of the motor, inverter and reducer into one compact unit delivers a 10 percent downsizing in the drivetrain. 'We developed the technologies that realize this third-generation Leaf with an emphasis on efficiency, efficiency, efficiency,' Chief Vehicle Engineer Hiroki Isobe said during a June 9 briefing at Nissan's global headquarters. 'It is a more rational vehicle as a whole package.' Nissan Motor Co. hopes the technological strides make range anxiety and afterthought for buyers in the U.S. and other markets where the Leaf has been leapfrogged by EV rivals. The U.S. launch leads the global rollout, with the start of sales in Japan and Europe happening around year end. Sign up for our daily First Shift morning newscast email for a quick video to start your day. But the U.S. isn't expected to be the Leaf's biggest market, largely because of uncertainty around EV incentives and the Leaf's prospects as an import in the era of stepped-up U.S. tariffs. Nissan ended production of the second-generation Leaf at its Smyrna, Tenn., assembly plant. For the third generation, Leaf output will be consolidated at Nissan's Sunderland plant in the U.K. and at its Tochigi plant in Japan. Batteries will be sourced from AESC in Japan and Europe. Europe is expected to be the Leaf's biggest market, taking some 60 percent of global deliveries, Chief Product Specialist Keiji Endo said at a briefing. Japan will account for about 20 to 30 percent of global sales, depending on the demand level in the U.S., he said. Endo declined to give a worldwide sales target, but he said Leaf volume should exceed that of the Nissan Ariya flagship EV crossover. The Ariya, which will share a production line with the Leaf at Tochigi, notched global deliveries of around 50,000 in the fiscal year ended March 31. Nissan sold about 19,800 of the electric crossovers in the U.S. — and 1,664 in Canada — in calendar year 2024. 'We don't yet know the full impact of the U.S. tariff,' Endo said. 'We still want the Leaf to be our best-selling EV globally, but we still don't know the exact sales figure.' Overall, the 2026 Leaf rides a little lower, with a more steeply raked windshield and raised tail lip. It is shorter in overall vehicle length, achieves a tighter turning radius and has more rear cargo room. The new Leaf also gets a nose job, dramatically reducing the front overhang. Flush, pop-out front door handles, a first for Nissan, improve the air flow, as does full underbody sheeting, better front tire air deflectors, flat wheel covers and a fully closing grille shutter. 'We worked with r&d so many times, over and over and over, undertaking aerodynamic analysis to realize this efficiency,' Program Design Director Nobutaka Tase said. A better thermal management system integrates the heating and air conditioning system with the battery and powertrain to improve overall performance. The outgoing Leaf partially integrated the heating and air conditioning with only the battery. The system also leans on the onboard navigation system to preselect the best heating or cooling setting for the drive ahead. If the car navigation determines it is summer and that the upcoming route covers some heavy-load scenarios, such as a hill climb, the system automatically adjusts the battery cooling mode to conserve energy and extend battery charge. The new Leaf's battery size is also bumped up to 75 kilowatt-hours for the upper grade, from 60 kWh before, and to 52 kWh for the entry grade, from 40 kWh. Nissan hasn't given a range yet for the 52-kWh battery variant. But of the three versions offered with the 75 kWh-pack, the long-range edition has an estimated EPA range of 303 miles (487 kilometers). The heaviest of them, the top-tier Platinum+ model, achieves 259 miles (341 kilometers). The long-range 2025 Leaf, by contrast, had an EPA range of 212 miles. In Europe and Japan, Nissan said the range will exceed 372 miles (598 kilometers), under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle test cycle, which is considered more lenient than EPA testing. The Leaf's top-tier model keeps a 160-kilowatt motor, but the lower-trim graduates to a 130-kw setup, from the second-generation's 110-kw motor. Have an opinion about this story? Nissan's all-new 2026 LEAF EV comes at a critical time for automaker

Nissan (NSANY) revealed the all-new 2026 LEAF EV, a big update to one of the original mainstream EVs offered in America. But the updated, compact EV comes at a precarious time for the automaker. The new LEAF features a more standard design, an update to the prior-generation LEAF that looked like a hatchback version of the entry-level Versa. Nissan went more upmarket with the LEAF, giving it a desirable crossover compact SUV form factor, along with looks inspired by its big brother, the Ariya EV. Though the car features a new design, Nissan wanted to maintain the original LEAF's low pricing. 'We have not released final pricing on the vehicle, but fair to assume early on that [it will be in] the very low $30's [thousands],' with higher trims reaching $40,000, said Ponz Pandikuthira, senior vice president and chief planning officer for Nissan Americas. While that's a bit more than the current LEAF, which starts at $28,140, Pandikuthria believes what's most important is maintaining a similar monthly payment, a metric Nissan will try to maintain when the LEAF goes on sale later this year. Pandikuthria, whose role includes defining Nissan's future product portfolio and profitability, believes the new LEAF is a much-improved update to a car that's sold 700,000 units since its 2010 debut but 'never won any beauty pageants,' he said. The LEAF will come in a front-wheel-drive-only configuration, with one electric motor driving the front wheels, but that means higher efficiency, translating to an estimated 303-mile range from its 75-kWh battery pack, a huge jump from the 212-mile range of the current LEAF SV Plus. The new LEAF will also come with Tesla's NACS inlet port built in, providing easy access to Tesla's ubiquitous Supercharger network. Speaking of Tesla (TSLA), the EV king is one of the brands Nissan is targeting, with the automaker shooting for a 70% conquest rate, Pandikuthria said. With the cheapest Model 3 coming in at around $42,500, there is an opportunity. But Nissan faces a potential hurdle with tariffs. President Trump's auto sector tariffs of 25% apply to the Japanese-built LEAF, meaning an additional $7,500 in extra costs for the car, the majority of which Nissan will likely have to pass to the consumer. And the US and Japan left this week's G7 meeting without a trade deal. Tariffs aside, Nissan is in a tough spot. The company posted a net loss of around $4.6 billion for fiscal 2024, and new CEO Iván Espinosa is targeting 20,000 job cuts and the closure of seven of its 17 global plants by 2027. That being said, Nissan is trying to stem the losses in important markets like China and the US. The company intends to release 10 new and updated vehicles in North America by 2027. The new LEAF is one of them. And Nissan needs it to be a hit. Pras Subramanian is the lead auto reporter for Yahoo Finance. You can follow him on X and on Instagram.
