‘Quietly Impressed': Bad Company Talks Upcoming Tribute Album ‘Can't Get Enough'

Yahoo2 days ago
Some musical admirers who can't get enough of Bad Company are living out a rock 'n' roll fantasy as part of a new tribute album.
Can't Get Enough: A Tribute to Bad Company comes out Oct. 24 on Primary Wave Music, just two weeks before the group's Nov. 8 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Los Angeles. The first taste is the Struts' version of Bad Company's top 20 Billboard Hot 100 hit 'Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy,' for which the group has also uploaded a video of its studio recording session. HARDY, Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, Charley Crockett and Dirty Honey also take a whack at some of the group's biggest hits, while the Pretty Reckless contribute a version of Bad Company predecessor Free's 'All Right Now.'

The 10-track set also features several collaborations with Bad Company's surviving members: frontman Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke join Def Leppard's Joe Elliott and Phil Collen on a rendition of 'Seagull' from 1974's self-titled debut album; Rodgers teams with Halestorm on 1975's 'Shooting Star'; and Rodgers, with Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor, are part of Blackberry Smoke's take on the title track to 1976's Run With the Pack.
'It has been very interesting listening to other musicians interpret our songs,' says Rodgers, who co-founded Bad Company with Free partner Kirke, late Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs and King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell during 1973 in London. 'I spent time listening and found myself smiling a lot. I am quietly impressed that these artists wanted to pay tribute to Bad Company. We are thankful that everyone played from every inch of their hearts on this release. You can hear it.'
'It's an honor to have these artists perform our songs,' Kirke adds. 'It means that the music has endured and has transcended multiple generations. It's a salute to the songwriting.'
Can't Get Enough was the brainchild of Primary Wave, which aligned with Bad Company in 2022, and was executive produced by the company's Robert Dippold and Adam Lowenberg, along with colleague and Bad Company fan Gary Spivack. The team worked for more than 10 months recruiting and assembling the tracks from the individual acts. Dippold, partner and president of digital strategy, says the tribute album idea surfaced during Primary Wave's earliest days with the band.
'Putting together this tribute album to Bad Company has truly been a labor of love,' Dippold explains. 'We came up with the idea for a proper tribute album a couple of years ago after partnering with Paul Rodgers, when we realized that there had never been a covers or tribute album dedicated to his incredible band and song catalog.
'Bad Company and Free have influenced countless musicians and bands over the decades, both as bands and through the individual impact of their members. We hope this release introduces Bad Company to a new generation of music lovers while honoring their loyal fanbase. This is just one of many projects we're working on with Paul and his team as we continue to develop creative marketing initiatives around his catalog and brand, finding new ways to bring greater awareness to his songs and further showcase the depth of this incredible body of work.'
Rodgers says that he was particularly impressed by Primary Wave's approach, 'which was not to go to our rock 'n' roll comrades to record the songs, but rather draw from an eclectic group of musicians from varied brands of music. Mick and I wondered how the songs would sound, and what application would be given to them.' Rodgers says Ralphs heard the Struts track before he passed away on June 23 and pronounced it ''fabulous.' We both felt that it is great when musicians feel passionate enough about a song to lend their creative spirit to it and record it.' He also credits his wife, Cynthia, with the idea of having him and Kirke being part of some of the songs.
'I really wasn't sure what her vision was until we were in the studio. The tracks were so complete within themselves. I did not want to put myself in the mix too much and interfere with the groove already created, so I kept my participation to a limit and added just a bit, which was her plan. It was a good creative exercise for me.'
Halestorm's Lzzy Hale says Bad Company is a longtime influence and calls Rodgers in particular 'the ultimate rock voice. It was specifically his insertion of soul into the rock sound that was highly influential to me…. It's the honor of a lifetime that Paul joined us on ('Shooting Star'). I grew up listening to this song; it's tattooed on my heart and soul, so when we found out it was an option, we jumped on it…. We did it separately but just to have our voices intertwined on this epic song is a dream come true.'
Kirke says that in joining Elliott and Collen, 'it was cool to perform on 'Seagull.' I never saw it as a song near drums before, but once I got over that, it was a breeze.' Elliott seconds the notion, explaining that, 'I've loved Bad Company since the very beginning, a phenomenal combination of two of my favorite bands, Free and Mott the Hoople…what a privilege it is for myself and Phil to cover one of my favorite Bad Company songs, with Paul and Simon.'
Blackberry Smoke's Charlie Starr says many key Bad Company songs were already selected when his band signed on, but when he heard 'Run With the Pack' was available, 'I said, 'That's It!' It's just such a perfectly written song; it's economical, and it's got that swagger. They start laying down that runka-runka groove, that's where my heart lives. That's the groove Blackberry Smoke lives in. We went into the studio and cut it in an afternoon. Then I got a question about three days after we sent the mix, 'Is it OK with you if Paul sings on it?' I said, 'I think you know the answer to that question — always yes.''
HARDY, who opens the album with 'Ready For Love,' says that Bad Company comes from 'a short list of bands my dad played for me as a young boy that shaped my love for rock 'n' roll. It's a very cool and surreal moment to be part of this project.'
Kirke calls Free's 'All Right Now' a 'relevant and welcome inclusion. (It) kind of started the whole ball rolling, didn't it?' Rodgers, who's also working on a memoir, adds that the song 'marked the beginning of this musical life for Simon and I. I started to add it into our Bad Company set about the last five years that Bad Company toured, and it became an integral part of our set and our story. That song never disappoints…it still has a way of engaging people and lifting you up.'
Primary Wave is looking forward to more Bad Company-related initiatives riding the momentum of their Rock Hall induction. '(Can't Get Enough) is just one of many projects we're working on with Paul and his team as we continue to develop creative marketing initiatives around his catalog and brand,' Dippold says, 'finding new ways to bring greater awareness to his songs and further showcase the depth of his incredible work.'
Can't Get Enough will be available in a variety of formats, including limited edition silver vinyl, CD and digital download. Information on the various packages and updates can be found via BadCompany.com.

Group toasts Grateful Dead's 60th with concerts at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Fans of the Grateful Dead are pouring into San Francisco for three days of concerts and festivities marking the 60th anniversary of the scruffy jam band that came to embody a city where people wore flowers in their hair and made love, not war. Dead & Company, featuring original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, will play Golden Gate Park's Polo Field starting Friday with an estimated 60,000 attendees each day. The last time the band played that part of the park was in 1991 — a free show following the death of concert promoter and longtime Deadhead Bill Graham. Certainly, times have changed. A general admissions ticket for all three days is $635 — a shock for many longtime fans who remember when a joint cost more than a Dead concert ticket. But Deadhead David Aberdeen is thrilled anyway. 'This is the spiritual home of the Grateful Dead,' said Aberdeen, who works at Amoeba Music in the bohemian, flower-powered Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. 'It seems very right to me that they celebrate it in this way.' Formed in 1965, the Grateful Dead is synonymous with San Francisco and its counterculture. Members lived in a dirt-cheap Victorian in the Haight and later became a significant part of 1967's Summer of Love. That summer eventually soured into bad acid trips and police raids, and prompted the band's move to Marin County on the other end of the Golden Gate Bridge. But new Deadheads kept cropping up — even after iconic guitarist and singer Jerry Garcia 's 1995 death — aided by cover bands and offshoots like Dead & Company. 'There are 18-year-olds who were obviously not even a twinkle in somebody's eyes when Jerry died, and these 18-year-olds get the values of Deadheads,' said former Grateful Dead publicist and author Dennis McNally. Fitting in, feeling at home Deadheads can reel off why and how, and the moment they fell in love with the music. Fans love that no two shows are the same; the band plays different songs each time. They also embrace the community that comes with a Dead show. Sunshine Powers didn't have friends until age 13, when she stepped off a city bus and into the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. 'I, all of a sudden, felt like I fit in. Or like I didn't have to fit in,' says Powers, now 45 and the owner of tie-dye emporium Love on Haight. 'I don't know which one it was, but I know it was like, OK." Similarly, her friend Taylor Swope, 47, survived a tough freshman year at a new school with the help of a Grateful Dead mixtape. The owner of the Little Hippie gift shop is driving from Brooklyn, New York, to sell merchandise, reconnect with friends and see the shows. 'The sense of, 'I found my people, I didn't fit in anywhere else and then I found this, and I felt at home.' So that's a big part of it,' she said of the allure. Magical live shows Sometimes, becoming a Deadhead is a process. Thor Cromer, 60, had attended several Dead shows, but was ambivalent about the hippies. That changed on March 15, 1990, in Landover, Maryland. 'That show, whatever it was, whatever magic hit,' he said, 'it was injected right into my brain.' Cromer, who worked for the U.S. Senate then, eventually took time off to follow the band on tour and saw an estimated 400 shows from spring 1990 until Garcia's death. Cromer now works in technology and is flying in from Boston to join scores of fellow 'rail riders' who dance in the rows closest to the stage. Aberdeen, 62, saw his first Dead show in 1984. As the only person in his college group with a driver's license, he was tapped to drive a crowded VW Bug from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, to Syracuse, New York. 'I thought it was pretty weird,' he said. 'But I liked it.' He fell in love the following summer, when the Dead played a venue near his college. Aberdeen remembers rain pouring down in the middle of the show and a giant rainbow appearing over the band when they returned for their second act. They played 'Comes a Time,' a rarely played Garcia ballad. 'There is a lot of excitement, and there will be a lot of people here,' Aberdeen said. 'Who knows when we'll have an opportunity to get together like this again?' Fans were able to see Dead & Company in Las Vegas earlier this year, but no new dates have been announced. Guitarist Bob Weir is 77, and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann are 81 and 79, respectively. Besides Garcia, founding members Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan on keyboards died in 1973 and bassist Phil Lesh died last year at age 84. Multiple events planned for Dead's 60th Mayor Daniel Lurie, who is not a Deadhead but counts 'Sugar Magnolia' as his favorite Dead song, is overjoyed at the economic boost as San Francisco recovers from pandemic-related hits to its tech and tourism sectors. 'They are the reason why so many people know and love San Francisco,' he said. The weekend features parties, shows and celebrations throughout the city. Grahame Lesh & Friends will perform three nights starting Thursday. Lesh is the son of Phil Lesh. On Friday, which would have been Garcia's 83rd birthday, officials will rename a street after the San Francisco native. On Saturday, visitors can celebrate the city's annual Jerry Day at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater located in a park near Garcia's childhood home. Janie Har, The Associated Press

‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' $170M Promo Push Boosted By Little Caesars, Zillow, Pop-Tarts & More; Pic Eyes $200M U.S. Box Office Cume In 2nd Frame

At $170 million in media value, the promotional partner campaign for Disney/Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four: The First Steps is the biggest in some time, ahead of the pushes for Marvel Cinematic Universe's Deadpool & Wolverine and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and even rival studio summer campaigns such as Jurassic World Rebirth ($150M). 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home at $288M remains the record holder when it comes to overall worth of an MCU promo partner campaign, that pic made at Sony. Among post-Covid MCU brand campaigns, Fantastic Four's overall value ranks behind Spider-Man: No Way Home's $202M and counts such brands as Little Caesars, Zillow, Pop-Tarts, General Mills, Citizen Watches and more. Several advertisers joined in on the movie's fun embracing its 1960s retro-future spirit, a motif woven into their in-world partnerships. More from Deadline Matt Shakman On Why 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Didn't Give Continuity To 'Thunderbolts' Post-Credits Scene 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' Lands At $117M+, Opening Reps Record For Franchise, Stars & Director Matt Shakman - Box Office Update Vanessa Kirby On Not Hesitating To Commit To Marvel & The "Complete Privilege" Of Working On 'Avengers: Doomsday' The Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Julia Garner movie is expected to make around $45M in its second weekend at the box office with a firm grip on No. 1. By Sunday, a $200M running total stateside is likely. Newcomers, Universal/DreamWorks Animation's Bad Guys and Paramount's hopeful revival of big screen comedies, Naked Gun, look to respectively open to $20M and $15M. Fantastic Four partners strategically leveraged their IP across cultural touchpoints – from high-impact traditional advertising to irreverent social media executions to buzzworthy experiential tactics to unique AR content, custom publishing and consumer giveaways. Interestingly enough, the North American campaign doesn't feature a car partner. Automobile companies typically contribute the boatload of media value in a movie promo campaign. That said, among overseas brand, Fantastic Four's has an automobile partner in Australia's Chery which is launching a line of hybrid family vehicles. Fast food partners are another enormous contributor to a movie's brand campaigns, and for Fantastic Four, that's Little Caesars. The 'Pizza-Pizza' retailer was one of five brand partners for the film which developed custom 'in world' commercials. Little Caesars, along with Zillow, was also one of two commercials directed by Fantastic Four: First Steps production designer Kasra Farahani. Little Caesars was also written and produced internally by the Marvel Partnerships team. The movie reps Little Caesars' second biggest partnership with a motion picture to date with media support across streaming, linear and digital throughout North America and select Latin American markets. Farahani's commercial features Giganto and recreates the iconic 1961 comic No. 1 cover. The spot has racked up north of 7M views across YouTube. There was also a $4 Fandango movie ticket offer combo in addition to four custom pizza boxes made, each featuring a character from the movie. Little Caesars also sold its 'Fantastic 4-In-One' pizza (four different topping combinations on one pizza). Real estate site Zillow gave fans the opportunity to tour the period futuristic theme penthouse from the movie, located within the Baxter Building. Featured highlights included space-age conversation pit and a rotating fireplace/TV, indoor BBQ, a cosmic nursery, and Mister Fantastic's futuristic lab. In addition to directing the commercial, Farahani also directed a virtual home tour and co-designed a variety of bespoke print imagery, including an ad for the New York Times. Fans were invited to dial a special telephone number for a personalized tour and explore downloadable high-res images of the Marvel landmark. The campaign kicked off on July 7. Zillow listed the home for $4.44M. Pop-Tarts push for the pic spotlighted 'FanTASTEic Four,' a humorous team of giant pastry mascots that charm Gen-Z audiences but hilariously fall short at heroism. The in-world spot emphasized snack appeal over superhero skills. General Mills embraced retrofuturism with limited-edition 1960s themed cereal boxes including Honey Nut Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, and Reese's Puffs. Walmart (which featured Cocoa Puffs with Galactus) and Kroger (which had Trix featuring H.E.R.B.I.E.) were among key retailers. There was also a limited-edition Lucky Charms box with a Johnny Storm available at Walmart. General Mills was an MCU promo partner on Loki with 'Loki Charms', Thunderbolts* with Wheaties and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. There was support from social media influencers with Evan Tanaka (327K followers) creating his own commercial: Snapple launched packaging inspired by each of the heroes. Each bottle unlocked an augmented reality (AR) experience with details about the film and a memory card game featuring Galactus. The push included 22M+ themed ice teas of four different flavors. Synchrony is a longtime MCU partner and their period spot spotlighted a fiscally savvy family, blending nostalgia with financial literacy. The commercial features a H.E.R.B.I.E.-themed savings calculator, a character-inspired digital board game that transforms budgeting into a heroic journey and even a piggy bank of The Thing. How did the pre-swinging generation keep track of time and visualize the future? Citizen watches had an idea with their vintage inspired design and advanced technology Marvel edition Citizen Zenshin timepiece collector's set. The watch features a film-themed blue dial, with icons at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock representing each hero's powers. There were co-branded spots and media placements such as the ABC Super Sign in NYC, taxi media exposure, as well as digital and social media amplification. Having just partnered on Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World, sports bar restaurant Topgolf created an in-venue experience where groups of four or more players teamed up and battled Galactus in a themed Block Party digital game available at all U.S. and Scotland locations. Google Play integrated The Fantastic Four into a priority game launch tied to Google Play Rewards. This was further boosted at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. Take a look: Other Fantastic Four: First Steps brand partners included Juicy Fruit and Doublemint, and Formula E which had a themed takeover of their annual championship ePrix race last weekend in London. Formula E previously teamed with Marvel on Thunderbolts* for a wrap of one of their cars. Marvel Studios also worked with Dairy Farmers of America/Trumoo which served up their line of TruMoo 'Fantastic Berry' low-fat blue milk, inspired by the campaign's bold color palette. There's also film-themed packaged regional milk brands (e.g. Altadena) available at retailers like Target, Walmart, etc. through September. The promotion included four 'Power Up Your Pour' color-changing drinking glasses, with one of each The Fantastic Four character designs released weekly from July 18 through August 8. 'Our team built a truly fantastic global promotional campaign—one that felt completely authentic, immersive, and organically woven into the world of the Fantastic Four,' Lylle Breier, EVP, Partnerships, Promotions, Synergy & Events tells Deadline Hollywood. 'It was a true collaboration between our best-in-class brand partners, the talented filmmakers, and our amazing internal creative team who wrote and produced the fully custom spots that seamlessly transformed our promotional content into an extension of the film's marketing campaign and pop culture.'
