Co-op shops stop taking card payments amid cyber attack
The Co-op has stopped taking card payments in some of its shops as it battles the fallout from a devastating cyber attack.
The retailer confirmed on Tuesday that some parts of its business have been limited to accepting cash only in response to the breach, which has wreaked havoc across the Co-op's systems and left it facing empty shelves.
Pictures of stores displaying handmade signs warning that customers will not be able to use their payment cards have already emerged on social media, although the retailer said it is hoping to restore digital payments later this morning.
It is understood that the majority of shops are still accepting card payments.

It comes after the Co-op admitted on Friday that the hack was much more serious than first expected, confessing that millions of customers' data had been stolen by a gang of cyber criminals.
A group known as DragonForce claimed responsibility for the attack, telling the BBC they had details of around 20m Co-op customers.
That was in stark contrast to the Co-op's initial claims that the attack only affected 'back office and call centre services'.
DragonForce also claimed responsibility for similar breaches at both Marks & Spencer and Harrods, and threatened further attacks by claiming UK retailers were on its 'blacklist'.
The card issue emerged after the attack already made it difficult for the Co-op to secure some food and drink items, leading to empty shelves across its stores.
The retailer said that 'sustained malicious attempts by hackers to access our systems' meant some stores would not have their regular selection available.
Dalton Philips, the boss of Greencore, a major supplier of sandwiches to the retailer, said over the weekend it was having to resort to 'pen and paper' methods to keep Co-op stocked up.
He told the BBC: 'In the absence of having all the systems speaking to each other, you revert to how it was 25 years ago.'
The DragonForce group is known for using ransomware to encrypt companies' systems before demanding a payment in order to unlock them.
The attacks have also been linked to a gang known as Scattered Spider, a group said to be made up of British and American teenagers.
Stephen Bonner, deputy commissioner of the Information Commissioner's Office, told the Today Programme on Tuesday that the chaos was 'a wake-up call to every organisation'.

Tottenham are prioritising the appointment of their new head coach but there is recognition that they must now act quickly following a slow start to their summer transfer business Tottenham's hesitance over the future of Ange Postecoglou has already seen them miss out on two midfielders and now they want to get a deal for the Aussie's successor in place to avoid missing out on further targets. The Bees head coach is thought to have a good relationship with Spurs technical director and compatriot Johan Lange, who is expected to remain at the club and he'll also be tasked with overseeing transfer business alongside the likely returning Fabio Paratici. Spurs have already lost key ground in the market, England international Angel Gomes, a player Tottenham had been pursuing, has opted to join Marseille on a free transfer after also snubbing West Ham. Gomes' contract with Lille is set to expire at the end of the month but he now looks poised to remain in France after warming to the idea of working with Roberto De Zerbi. Meanwhile, Real Betis' American maestro Johnny Cardoso has agreed to join Atletico Madrid, providing a club-to-club deal can be struck. Last summer, Spurs negotiated a £21million first-option clause - that can only be triggered during a two-week window - on USMNT starlet Cardoso when selling Giovani Lo Celso to Betis. But it now looks as though Atletico will pounce and conclude a deal at a higher price for the highly-rated 23-year-old, who is not willing to wait around for Tottenham. Names of continued interest are the likes of Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, who has a £68m buy-out clause (worth £60m + £8m in add-ons) that becomes active this summer, and Eagles skipper Marc Guehi while the Europa League winners were also tracking Bryan Mbeumo. Mbeumo has intimated that he wants to join Manchester United, who have had a £55m bid rejected and it remains to be seen if Tottenham-linked Frank could potentially swing the balance and convince his current player to join him in north London, if he lands the job. Ultimately, until Spurs know who their new manager is going to be - he will have a clear say on targets - it's difficult to envisage them splashing out on mega-money deals. Business will also likely be shaped by potential outgoings with Cristian Romero and captain Heung-min Son among those that could yet seek to pursue new challenges. Inevitably, they would need to be replaced with quality. Spurs remain keen on signing Mathys Tel on a permanent basis but they want to negotiate with Bayern Munich and won't be triggering their mooted £45m buy-option. Jared Leto denies sexual misconduct after facing accusations from multiple women
Jared Leto has been accused by a number of women of "behaving inappropriately" when they were teenagers, with claims he exposed himself and made sexual comments. Leto has denied all allegations made against him Jared Leto has been accused of 'inappropriateness' by a number of women in a report. The 53-year-old American singer and actor has been in the spotlight since the early 1990s. He has had roles in iconic TV shows including My So-Called Life and WeCrashed, films including Blade Runner 2049 and Dallas Buyers Club, and as the frontman of rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars. Having been regarded as a Hollywood and chart heartthrob around the world, the star is now facing damaging accusations - which a spokesperson has denied. An investigation by Air Mail magazine - a luxury lifestyle outlet edited by former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter - has claimed nine women have accused the star "behaving inappropriately" when they were in their teens. One woman claims the actor approached her in a Los Angeles cafe in 2006 when she was 16 and asked for her number. She claims he then called her "in the middle of the night" and tried to get her to attend a party - which she says she declined, adding: "I didn't even have a driver's license." The woman claims he then called her regularly for the following three weeks, allegedly "Always at one, two, three A.M" and claims the conversations: "Turned sexual. He'd ask things like, 'Have you ever had a boyfriend? Have you ever sucked a d**k?'' A second woman claims he also approached her when she was 16 and acquired her number claims his conversations would occasionally be "flirtatious" - and that he once walked out in front of her completely naked when she was 17 when she was at his home. A third, described as having an "on-off affair" with the star claimed: 'He'd be sweet, then suddenly really demeaning. It was a switch.' A further woman alleges that the star exposed himself to her when she was at his home and "started masturbating" when she was 18. She claims he told her: "I want you to spit on it." The Air Mail article accuses Leto of approaching younger women and claims it was "known" in Hollywood that he liked younger women. Another woman told the publication: ' I remember being so physically ill to the point of throwing up when I passed billboards … for his films,' one woman tells me, 'and just wondering how everybody in L.A. knows.' The Mirror has contacted Leto's representatives for comment. While Air Mail adds that a representative of the star denied all allegations made against him in their report. Leto was once engaged to actress Cameron Diaz - who he was in a relationship with from 1999 until 2003. They were engaged in 2000 until their split three years later. He later dated Russian model Valery Kaufman from 2015 to 2022. He has never married - and has been romantically linked to a number of women in the past, including Scarlett Johansson and Paris Hilton.
