Assam: Minister Hazarika reviews BTR embankments for monsoon flood protection
Tamulpur (Assam) [India] May 11 (ANI): The Minister for Water Resources in Assam, Pijush Hazarika, conducted a comprehensive one-day visit to Tamulpur district today to assess the advancement of various significant embankment projects within the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
This visit was part of a broader effort to strengthen flood and erosion protection measures in anticipation of the upcoming monsoon season.
During the course of his visit, Minister Hazarika conducted detailed inspections of four key embankment projects that are currently in progress within the district. It may be noted that each of these projects employs advanced geo mega tube technology, which is intended to enhance both the durability and long-term effectiveness of the flood and erosion mitigation measures being implemented.
The Minister visited the Dikpar (Ghatirpam) site near Goreswar, where a 3.5-kilometre embankment along the Suklai River is under construction, costing Rs. 5.75 crore under the SOPD (G) scheme. He then inspected a 2.1-kilometre embankment at Kakatichuba (Bholajhar), costing Rs. 2.65 crore, followed by a 4.7-kilometre project from Palokata to Balabari in Tamulpur, with an estimated cost of Rs. 6.44 crore.
The final inspection was at a 3-kilometre stretch between Chapatal and Gohain Kamal Ali, costing Rs. 5.10 crore, contributing to a total of 13 kilometres of embankments planned for Tamulpur district this year.
Addressing the media at the site of the visit, the Minister stated that the use of Geo Mega Tubes in embankment construction has significantly enhanced the structural integrity and durability of these flood protection measures. He added that these reinforced embankments are expected to provide sustained protection against flooding and soil erosion, thereby improving the safety and resilience of adjacent areas.
He further outlined that the Assam Government, under the leadership of Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, remains committed to the holistic development of BTR, with particular emphasis on flood control as a key policy area. The Minister highlighted that effective flood management is essential for the protection of infrastructure, agricultural productivity, and the wellbeing of local communities. The BJP and its alliance partner UPPL is ushering in a period of rapid development in BTR and with the people's support this growth will continue, he asserted.
The Minister was accompanied during his visit to the district by several dignitaries, including MLA Tamulpur Jolen Daimary, Member of the Assam Youth Commission Ratul Sharma, Executive Member of the BTR Ranendra Narzary, the Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, and other senior officials. "On Monday, one of the ladies of our society called to ask if I was fine, because I travel to work at the same time that the accident occurred. That is when I learnt of the mishap," he said. "Since I am in my 50s, there is no question of me fighting to get inside the train or risk my life by standing on the footboard. So I have purchased an AC train pass for Rs 1,500. But not everybody can," he said.

Girl's request to build a tar road to her hamlet in STR evokes response from govt, work begins
District collector Rajagopal Sunkara on Sunday performed the 'bhoomi puja' for the road work in the presence of the girl. ERODE: A Class XII girl student's request to the Erode district administration to repair and tar a road from Bejalatti to Ittarai, a tribal hamlet located in the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, has evoked a positive response after 10 months of waiting. District collector Rajagopal Sunkara on Sunday performed the 'bhoomi puja' for the road work in the presence of the girl. M Archana appealed to the Erode district collector on August 21, 2024 for a tar road to the tribal hamlet in Thalavadi taluk. Archana is currently pursuing nursing. She made the request to the collector when he visited the tribal hamlet as part of the 'Ungalai Thedi, Ungal Ooril' initiative to gather petitions from the residents. "Archana, who was in Class XII, came to me with a request for a tar road," Rajagopal Sunkara told TOI. The student narrated the challenges the villagers faced due to the absence of the road. Highway department officials noted that the tar road had been laid 25 years ago but had deteriorated completely for various reasons. Kalaivani said she was one such person who had given up her desire to study more, after finishing Class XII, due to the lack of buses. The district collector secured approval from forest department and Rs 3.88 crore in funding from the state govt for the road project. The road will cover four km between Bejalatti and Ittarai, connecting other tribal hamlets such as Thadasalatti and Eratti. The collector noted that tar roads have been built in other tribal hamlets in Thalavadi taluk. They include roads between Konkadai and Thalakkarai (at a cost of Rs 74 lakh), Dhimbam and Mavanatham (at Rs 82 lakh), Dhimbam and Kalidhimbam (at Rs 1.08 crore) and Dhimbam-Thalavadi-Ramaranai road (at Rs 51.45 crore). The villagers of Bejalatti and Ittarai hamlets expressed their gratitude to the district collector and Archana for their efforts.

Explosion reported on Singapore-flagged container ship off Kerala coast, Indian Coast Guard responds with assistance
Kochi (Kerala) [India], June 9 (ANI): A Singapore-flagged container ship, MV WAN HAI 503, which was on passage from Colombo to Nhava Sheva, reported an underdeck explosion in position 315, Kochi 130, according to the Indian Coast Guard PRO. As per the information, five crew members have been injured, whereas four have gone missing. The ship was carrying a total of 22 crew members, and the CGDO who was on the task has been diverted for further assessment. At around 9:30 am, the Indian Coast Guard received a distress alert from the Singapore-flagged container vessel. The vessel had departed the port of Colombo, Sri Lanka, with 22 crew onboard on 06 Jun 25, for the Nhava Sheva Port, Mumbai, India, with an estimated time of arrival of 09 Jun 25. ICG assets were diverted immediately and are coordinating rescue operations for the crew. ICG Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Mumbai, diverted MV One Marvel, which recovered 18 of the crew. Of the 18 crew rescued, one is reported to have sustained serious injuries. Four crew members (02 Taiwanese, 01 Indonesian and 01 Myanmarese) are missing from the time of the explosion, and their search is in progress. ICG Dornier aircraft is maintaining overhead the vessel for real-time assessment The vessel is presently adrift, and firefighting efforts by the Indian Coast Guard have commenced to bring the situation under control.
