Jayasuriya's five-for wraps up thumping win for Sri Lanka over Bangladesh in second Test
Sri Lanka needed just 28 minutes of the morning session of the fourth day to wrap up the entire series and secure their ninth-innings victory over Bangladesh. Left-arm ball tweaker Prabath Jayasuriya did the bulk of the damage with the spin traps and returned with figures of 5/56, his 12th five-wicket haul in Test format.
Jayasuriya weaved his magic just three deliveries into his first over of the fourth day. Litton Das tried to negate the threat with forward defence but edged it to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis (14) behind the stumps. He stung Bangladesh again in his next over by having Nayeem Hasan stumped on 5(8).
He completed his five-wicket haul by pouching a return catch to his right from Taijul Islam. Tharindu Ratnayake got into the thick of the action and trapped Ebadot Hossain in front of the stumps in the next over to pull the curtain down on Bangladesh's innings in just 34 deliveries into the morning session.
Jayasuriya spun his best against Bangladesh and found his lost mojo after going wicketless in the first innings and striking once in Galle. In the second innings, a total of nine wickets fell to spin, with Tharindu and captain Dhananjaya de Silva sharing two apiece apart from Jayasuriya's five-for.
Earlier in the Test, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat, just as they had done in the series opener in Galle. However, they failed to replicate their previous success and turned out to be pale shadows of their former self. They finished with 247 on the board, and in reply, Sri Lanka notched 458 on the board, courtesy of Pathum Nissanka's flamboyant 158(254), Dinesh Chandimal's resilient 93(153) and Kusal's quick-fire 84(87).
Bangladesh attempted to conjure an inspired performance but fell short in their efforts. Jayasuriya tore through Bangladesh's batting order and forced them to pack on 133 in 44.2 overs, sealing a 1-0 series win for the hosts.

PCB announces central contracts; Babar, Rizwan downgraded to Category B
Islamabad : Star Pakistan players Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have been demoted to Category B from A as the Pakistan Cricket Board announced the men's central contract list for 2025/26 on Tuesday. Players such as Abrar Ahmed, Haris Rauf, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha and Shadab Khan have been rewarded for their performances across the last 12 months by earning an upgrade on the side's central contract list for 2025/26. The quintet all performed admirably over the past year and earned a promotion to Category B on the latest contract list that Pakistan unveiled on Tuesday. In total, 30 players have secured central contracts for the year starting July 1, 2025, with 10 players listed in Category B. That list is headed by former skipper Babar Azam, star opener Fakhar Zaman and pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi, with Abrar, Rauf, Ayub, Ali Agha and Shadab joining the group until at least June 30 2026. Hesson points how Babar could return to T20Is following Asia Cup omission
Islamabad: Pakistan coach Mike Hesson said that star batter Babar Azam could make his return to the T20I set-up by working on his game against spin and strike rate and admitted that the 30-year-old was "working really hard on" these things. Babar has not featured in the shortest format for Pakistan since the end of last year, and the right-hander was recently left out of the side's squad for the upcoming tri-series against the UAE and Afghanistan and next month's Asia Cup. The former Pakistan captain looked in decent touch when he managed 47 from 64 deliveries during the opening match of Pakistan's recent ODI series against the West Indies in Trinidad, but a pair of failures (zero and nine) from the ensuing contests failed to grab the attention of selectors. His overall strike rate of 129.22 and 133.21 last year in 24 matches and 23 innings, during which he gathered 738 runs with six fifties to his name, attracted plenty of criticism. Hesson suggested two key areas that Babar must address if he wishes to return to the international fold for the next edition of the T20 World Cup at the start of next year, and has left the door ajar should the former Pakistan skipper be able to perform well during Australia's domestic Big Bash (BBL) competition in December and January. "There is no doubt Babar's been asked to improve in some areas around taking on spin and in terms of his strike rate. Those are things he is working really hard on," Hesson said as quoted by ICC. "But at the moment the players we have, have done exceptionally well. Sahibzada Farhan has played six games (against Bangladesh and West Indies) and won three Player of the Match awards." "A player like Babar has an opportunity to play in the BBL and show he is improving in those areas in T20s. He is too good a player not to consider," he added. The absence of Babar was not the only surprise in Hesson's squad for Pakistan's upcoming contests, with Mohammad Rizwan also missing out on the 17-player group as selectors opted to choose batters that consistently scored at a high strike rate. Hesson indicated it was important that players who had performed well in recent white-ball matches were rewarded and said that choosing batters who scored quickly would be part of his selection process going forward. "We were challenged with three different surfaces (in recent matches against Bangladesh and West Indies)" Hesson said. "In Lahore, the surfaces were flat and the batting excelled. We went to Bangladesh, where they were incredibly challenging and low-scoring games. Our top-order sets the game up. All the games we won the top order performed really well." "The third game in the West Indies, our openers put on 140 (138). We need a run rate that puts us ahead of the game. T20 is all about setting the game up and being ahead of the game all the time in case you get yourself out. From a batting point of view, we have got a line-up that can continue to do that," he added. "Feel I couldn't be more ready for it": Joe Root on registering maiden Ashes ton on Australian soil
London: Star English batter Joe Root is aiming for his first-ever century in Australia, with his side set to tour Down Under for the Ashes series, with the first Test starting from November 21 at Perth. The five-match series will be a crucial part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) campaign for both sides. The Three Lions, who just drew the series against a new-look Shubman Gill-led Indian side by 2-2, will be aiming for their first Ashes series win in Australia since 2011, and their first since 2015, when they won 3-2 as hosts.
