Avocado sector platform in Uganda to propel growth and unlock global market opportunities
The milestone marks the culmination of a series of collaborative efforts led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), with support from the International Trade Centre (ITC) through the European Union (EU)-funded EU-East African Community (EAC) Market Access Upgrade Programme (MARKUP II).
Building on the first consultative meeting held in November 2024, two informal meetings were held in February and March 2025 to review and refine the roadmap. The platform's formalization under MAAIF leadership reflects strong public-private commitment to transforming Uganda into a competitive avocado exporter.
Key steps have been taken to operationalize the platform, including preparation of a draft secretariat budget and exploration of funding opportunities. A public-private partnership model is envisioned, with MAAIF hosting the platform and private sector partners supporting the secretariat. An Expression of Interest for the secretariat was shared with industry associations and will be soon finalized.
MAAIF will officially activate the platform and convene its first formal meeting to elect a Chair, finalize the work plan, set key performance indicators for the platform.
The Uganda Avocado Roadmap prioritizes several transformative actions.:
Improved Hass seedling distribution at preferential rates;
Promotion of GAP certification through avocado associations;
Establishment of a hub-and-spoke model with commercial farmers and cooperatives to serve as input supply, aggregation, and learning centers;
Creation of an avocado export consortium for collective international representation and standards compliance;
Investment in affordable packaging solutions and cold-chain for fresh exports;
Possible development of an avocado oil refinery and valorization of waste (e.g., seed husks, pulp residue) into animal feed.
The validated roadmap sets a clear direction for the sector, positioning Uganda to increase avocado exports, enhance farmer livelihoods, and contribute to agro-industrial transformation.

Oman: $7.7mln Quriyat fishing port upgrade 83% complete
Muscat – Construction of a marine wharf development project at Quriyat fishing port is 83% complete, according to Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. Costing more than RO2.97mn, the project is part of efforts to modernise fishing ports and boost their role in coastal economies under Oman Vision 2040. Mohammed bin Abdullah al Rashdi, Civil Engineer at Directorate General of Fishing Ports in the ministry, said the project aims to boost economic diversification, attract investment and develop the fishing fleet. 'The ministry seeks to create an investment-friendly environment and make better use of fish resources by improving port services for both public and private use,' he said. The development includes a 185m fixed berth on the breakwater, designed to improve maritime handling operations and expand the port's capacity. 'We are also constructing a new marine berth for mooring ships and boats, which will increase efficiency in port operations,' Rashdi said. A 33,000sqm investment plot is being created within the port to host commercial and service activities linked to the marine fisheries. Egypt's agricultural exports hit 6.5mln tons YTD
Arab Finance: Egypt's agricultural exports have reached a record 6.5 million tons so far this year, marking an increase of more than 600,000 tons compared to the same period in 2024, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk announced in a statement. Citrus topped the list of exported crops with more than 1.9 million tons, followed by fresh potatoes with over 1.3 million tons, and fresh onions with about 240,000 tons. Beans, both fresh and dry, ranked fourth with more than 202,000 tons, while grapes came fifth with around 170,000 tons. Other key exports include sweet potatoes, fresh tomatoes, garlic, strawberries, mangoes, guavas, and pomegranates. Farouk said the increase reflects the quality of Egyptian products and the trust they enjoy in global markets. Soap operas as a learning tool for small cross-border traders in Africa
A creative blend of storytelling, soap-opera-style drama, and culturally tailored content has changed the way small-scale cross-border traders work in Eastern and Southern Africa. This innovative training programme by the International Trade Centre (ITC) has empowered 2,500 traders, helping them navigate border procedures and formalise their businesses. By aligning training materials with traders' everyday experiences, the programme turned complex technical concepts into practical, engaging lessons that are easier to understand. The ITC SME Trade Academy 's Scalable Workshop methodology was adapted using digital content pre-loaded onto portable media hubs, ensuring consistent delivery even in areas with limited internet access. Training modules were developed in English, French, Bemba, and Nyanja, helping to overcome language barriers. Many small-scale cross-border traders, especially women, often deal with complex procedures, harassment, and corruption. Since cross-border trade is essential in Africa, this new approach can help other regions make small trade more official and improve how traders and government work together. Historically, many traders have operated informally, with limited understanding of official processes. In response, ITC developed a comprehensive Trade Facilitation Training Programme tailored specifically for traders with low literacy levels and limited digital access. The five-module curriculum covers essential topics, including border procedures, legal compliance, and managing corruption. Local ownership for long-term impact One of the programme's most significant achievements lies in its sustainability through local ownership. Five Cross-Border Trader Association branches continue to run training sessions independently, adapting the content to suit their specific contexts. In total, 1,855 additional participants have been trained. In some instances, sessions were even conducted in church venues when formal training spaces were unavailable. The programme's impact goes beyond education. Trader associations report that trained participants now follow legal border procedures more consistently, leading to greater compliance and improved operational efficiency. The practical knowledge acquired is being actively applied in daily business operations, resulting in better-informed decision-making. Some of the reported ripple effects are: Increased membership in trader associations due to growing trust and recognition More traders taking steps to formalize their businesses Stronger collaboration among traders through group activities Greater awareness among government officials of local trader associations New entrepreneurial ventures initiated by programme participants The programme reached several key border crossings, including Mwami/Mchinji (Zambia/Malawi), Chirundu (Zambia/Zimbabwe), Kasumbalesa (Zambia/Democratic Republic of Congo), Nakonde/Tunduma (Zambia/Tanzania), and Moyale (Kenya).
