
Fieldays boost farmer innovation despite science reorganisation: Dr Jacqueline Rowarth
The field days, at least in the case of the National Fieldays held at Mystery Creek in June (except during the Covid disruptions), go from strength to strength, despite the fog that is common in June in Waikato.
The point about field days, whether national, local or on-farm, is that they allow farmer-to-farmer exchange of information, as well as farmer-to-researcher, rural professionals, policymakers and interested urban-dwellers.
They also allow researchers, rural professionals and policymakers to interact with each other – and the people who have left the big cities to embrace whatever the field days have on offer.
Field days are, to quote an advertisement for a popular car, a real charcuterie of activity and people.
It is the charcuterie that stimulates innovation – new thinking about a problem, challenge or issue.
Farmers might be there to gather information and kick a few tyres of potential replacement tractors, but the value of the conversation is often to the person listening.
Scientists, researchers and developers frequently get their ideas from farmers, saying that they've met a problem or explaining how they overcame that problem.
This stimulates the scientist to think about how the problem might be solved or how the solution might be tested more widely.
And then they do the research.
At least, that is how it has worked in the past.
The reorganisations in the science sector won't stop the ideas, but how the 'action' will follow has yet to be decided.
Dr Shane Reti, the Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology (coincidentally a good description of what can be seen at National Fieldays), and also the Minister for Universities, inherited the reorganisation in the Cabinet reshuffle at the beginning of the year.

Reti is clear that the reorganisation aligns with the Government's priorities of driving economic growth and will allow the new organisations to be 'in a better position to deliver excellent science'.
'It will also make sure they're adopting more collaborative ways of working with universities and seeking partnerships with private sector investors, sooner,' he says.
The focus is on generating money and it is hardly surprising that the new Science Advisory Panel, chaired by the Prime Minister's new chief science advisor, Dr John Roche, has members with a track record of investment, as well as engineering and science.
Comments have been made about the apparent predominance of dairy, but it is the track record of achievement behind current roles that should be examined.
Further, New Zealand should be reassured that people who have an interest in the greatest revenue-earning sector are involved in the future of investment.
The big question remains whether the investment will be enough to stimulate what is needed.
The budget-shuffling indicated an emphasis on commercially viable science, but the quantum of investment is still below what has been urged repeatedly by the science sector.
Reti has said: 'Clear direction for the science, innovation and technology sector will give the public and private sector confidence to forge ahead with critical research that will help grow our economy.'
This suggests that co-investment is expected from companies and from the levy bodies that support the different sectors in primary production.
This is not a new plan.
'User-pays' dominated the thinking in the creation of the Crown Research Institutes (CRIs) in 1992.
This was when most of the government funding became contestable.
Unintended consequences included bidding for safe science (outcome known) and reduced collaboration (explained in Dr Doug Edmeades' paper Is the Commercial Model Appropriate for Science?).
To encourage collaboration, the National Science Challenges (NSCs, 2014-2024) 'brought together the country's top scientists to work collaboratively across disciplines, institutions and borders to achieve their objectives'.
Getting going, however, took longer than anticipated because of the cross-party negotiations that had to occur before the collaboration could start.
Reti's statement on collaboration for the new system is important.
The lessons from the CRIs and the NSCs are the foundation for a better future and, knowing the focus is the primary sector, the National Fieldays are a great place to start talking with the farmers.
Along with clouds, kiwi, sheep and, more recently, cows, it is farmer innovation that defines New Zealand, allowing the country to have a first-world economy on the basis of agricultural exports.
That is an extraordinary achievement.
Whether the future continues in the same vein will depend upon how the science reorganisation plays out and the talks that are held with the primary sector.
Farmers continue to be the key.

Kite-powered energy test site aims to revolutionise wind sector with flexibility
The sparsely populated spot near the stormy Atlantic coast is the world's first designated airborne renewable energy test site. And although the idea is still small in scale, it could yet prove to be a mighty plan as Ireland seeks to cut its reliance on fossil fuels such as oil and gas. 'We are witnessing a revolution in wind energy,' said Andrei Luca, operations head at Kitepower, a zero-emissions energy solutions spin-off from the Delft University of Technology. 'It took nearly 25 years for wind turbines to evolve from 30 kilowatt prototypes to megawatt scale, and decades to offshore wind farms we see today,' he added. The system flies autonomously, driven by software developed at the university in the Netherlands, but Doherty acts as the kite's 'pilot' on the ground, monitoring its flight path for efficiency. The kite flies up around 400m and reels in to about 190m, generating around 30kW for storage. The force spins 'like a dynamo on a bike', Doherty said, adding that 'it generates up to two and a half tonnes of force through each turn'. The electricity is stored in batteries, similar to solar photovoltaic systems, with the kite currently able to fully charge a 336kWh battery. 'That's a meaningful amount of energy, sufficient for powering a remote outpost, a small island, polar station, or even a construction site,' Luca said. 'Add additional kites and we can power a bigger island.' 'Mobile, flexible' According to Doherty, a chief advantage of the kite system is its flexibility and swift start-up capability. 'We can set up in 24 hours and can bring it anywhere, it's super mobile, and doesn't need expensive, time- and energy-consuming turbine foundations to be built,' he said. A kite system is 'way less invasive on the landscape [than wind turbines], produces clean energy and doesn't need a supply chain of fuel to keep running', Luca added. During January's Storm Eowyn, which caused widespread and long-lasting power outages in Ireland, the system showed its value in Bangor Erris, according to Luca. 'Paired with a battery, it provided uninterrupted electricity before, during and after the storm,' he said. Ireland's wind energy sector has long been touted as full of potential. But progress on large-scale delivery of onshore and offshore turbines has been held up by planning delays and electricity grid capacity constraints. The Irish Government has set ambitious targets for offshore wind energy to deliver 20 gigawatts of energy by 2040 and at least 37 gigawatts by 2050. In 2024, Irish wind farms provided around a third of the country's electricity according to Wind Energy Ireland (WEI), a lobby group for the sector. This compares to Britain where, according to trade association RenewableUK, wind energy from the country's combined wind farms first reached 20GW in November 2022. The ability of airborne wind energy (Awe) systems to harness high-altitude winds with relatively low infrastructure requirements 'makes them particularly suitable for remote, offshore or mobile applications', Mahdi Salari, an Awe researcher at University College Cork, told AFP. But he said Kitepower would face challenges on 'regulation, safety, and system reliability'. Such technology however could plug gaps in places where 'land availability, costs or logistical constraints hinder the deployment of traditional wind turbines', Salari said. Chinese Kiwi students find limewater effective in preserving flax

Annie He, Kay Wu and Linda Chen from Pinehurst School, all 15 years old, won the Cambridge Science Competition's Country Award for identifying limewater as an effective preservative. Inspired by kaitiakitanga, a Māori term meaning guardianship and protection of the natural environment, the team aimed to find out an efficient way to preserve traditional Māori flax artifacts. The group identified limewater, sodium bicarbonate solution and sodium hydroxide solution as potential alkalis they wanted to test. Photo: Supplied Using different cuts of flax, the team measured the change in mass of the flax before and after being added to the different alkalis, pH of flax before and after the treatment, the flax's fibre quality as well as their tensile strength. The team found that among the three solutions, limewater minimised mass loss, maximised tensile strength and maintained fibre health during storage. Judges praised the students for their cultural conservation and treatment of the flax in a sustainable way, according to the competition's website. Team member Kay Wu said they chose the topic of flax preservation to spread awareness about the growing challenges in protecting cultural artifacts. "This project deepened my scientific understanding and inspired me to become a more eager learner," Wu said. Annie He said the limewater must be diluted to a safe concentration. She said the team were looking forward to further investigating factors affecting flax preservation involving limewater, including optimum soaking duration, temperature, concentration of the solution and long-term preservation. "We believe this method has potential to preserve flax on a larger scale, as limewater is readily available and environmentally friendly," He said. "However, we don't recommend attempting this at home as we have only investigated the short-term effectiveness," she said. "In the long term, there may be different results." Sandy Liu, a teacher at Pinehurst School, applauded the students' teamwork and dedication. "Their efficiency and collaboration were outstanding," Liu said. "They treated the flax with care and respect, showing both curiosity and responsibility."

Scientists create a new online calculator that reveals your heart's age and your risk of heart disease
New ways of assessing heart health The idea of using health data to assess your risk of developing heart disease is hardly new, of course. The Framingham Risk Score, which uses various health metrics to predict your 10-year likelihood of developing heart disease, has been around for decades. More recently, the American Heart Association developed the Predicting Risk of Cardiovascular Disease Events (Prevent) equations, which use new data about the health of tens of thousands of American adults, beginning at age 30, to predict heart disease risk. Khan was the lead author of the 2023 study that laid out the Prevent equations. But she's also a clinician and knew from talking to patients that 'it's really hard to understand what a 10% risk' of developing heart disease in the near future 'means for you'. And she's a researcher who's studied longevity among the Amish and was interested in the differences between biological and chronological age, and why people born in the same year can seem to age quite differently. Those interests converged when she began wondering if she could reinterpret the Prevent equations into a framework that would be more intuitive for most people, telling them, in effect, if their hearts are ageing too fast. The study found most Americans have hearts older than their chronological age, with men averaging seven years older. Photo / 123rf Most Americans' hearts are older than they are So, she and her colleagues used the Prevent data to figure out benchmarks for optimal heart health markers, such as blood pressure and blood sugar, among men and women at every age from 30 to 79. These would set the underpinnings of the heart-age test. (Most of the metrics used in the calculator are standard, but some are more specialised, such as an eGFR, which tests kidney function.) Then, since they were interested in the state of heart health in America, they checked the heart ages of more than 14,000 men and women enrolled in the Government's huge and ongoing National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Most of them turned out to have hearts older than their biological age. Men, on average, had heart ages about seven years older than their chronological age, while women's hearts were about four years older than their birth years. The gulfs between actual and biological heart ages were largest among people, especially men, with a high school education or less and those who identified as black or Hispanic. But even many people in their 30s had relatively old hearts. What to do about an ageing heart What does it mean if the calculator says your heart is older than you? 'First, it's important to have context,' Khan said. 'A year's difference from your chronological age is probably not meaningful. But if people's hearts are more than five years or 10 years away from their chronological age, it's worth paying attention to what's going on and what might be driving that.' Talk to your doctor if your heart age is at least five years older than your calendar age, she said. The calculator might be indicating you'd benefit from more vigilance. 'We know that half of people with high blood pressure aren't being treated,' she said, 'and most people who qualify for statin therapy aren't on it.' The interventions needn't all be medical. 'Lifestyle changes, especially exercise and diet, are also important,' she said. Even people whose heart ages equal or prove younger than their actual age can benefit from that knowledge, she said. 'One of the most challenging things is to maintain healthy ageing.' So, as the years pass or you enter health transitions, such as menopause, the calculator might be able to help you track how well your heart continues to age. The study suggests that if your heart age is over five years older, consult a doctor and consider lifestyle changes. What the calculator leaves out The heart-age calculator has limits, though. 'It's a way to communicate risk that will resonate with some people,' said Martha Gulati, the director of preventive cardiology and associate director of the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Centre at Cedars-Sinai Health Sciences University in Los Angeles. But its equations don't include certain cardiovascular risk factors specific to women, she said, such as menopausal changes and pregnancy complications. They also don't include estimations of aerobic fitness or exercise habits, which can be key to heart health, said Ulrik Wisloff, the head of the cardiac exercise research group at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway, who's studied exercise and longevity for decades. 'I still find it puzzling why physical activity and peak oxygen uptake have yet to be incorporated into the original Framingham risk model, despite strong evidence' for their predictive power, he said. His group has developed its own free, online calculator, based on exercise and endurance, that estimates your fitness age in comparison with your chronological age. The key point about all of these biological-age calculators, whether they focus on fitness or organs, such as hearts, is that they can serve as a wake-up call, Gulati said. If the numbers indicate your heart might be ageing too rapidly, that's a message that you probably need to be paying some more attention to your health. 'I do think' the heart-age calculator 'is a bit gimmicky,' Gulati said. 'But if it helps to motivate a patient to make changes, I'm here for it.'
