Proton April sales up 14.7pct, boosted by e.MAS 7 EV debut
Proton's group sales closed the month at 12,692 units, which also pushed the company's market share to 20.8 per cent.
In comparison, total industry volume (TIV) for April is estimated to have grown by just 1.8 per cent year-on-year to 60,886 units and declined 16.3 per cent from March, reflecting slower sales during the festive period.
"The strong results have strengthened the company's grip on second position in the overall automotive sales table in Malaysia," it said in a statement.
"This comes at a time when offerings and price cuts from new brands have created an extremely competitive market environment, leaving car buyers with a wide range of options," it added.
The e.MAS 7 has seen its numbers climb each month since its launch in December last year.
The trend continued in April as the model breached the 800-unit barrier by achieving 863 units. This brought year-to-date (YTD) sales to 2,716 units.
Proton said this positioned the model as the best-selling EV in the country and the Proton e.MAS brand in second place for overall EV sales despite currently having only one model in its range.
"More importantly, the result means EVs now account for six per cent of overall Proton sales," said Proton.
Proton Edar chief executive officer Roslan Abdullah said automotive sales in Malaysia continue to be robust with TIV in 2025 sits behind the record- setting pace from the previous year.
"Our figures show the deficit currently stands at five per cent, which is respectable after two big festive periods in the first four months of the year.
"With many new models slated for introduction over the next eight months, expect the gap to shrink as buyers are presented with a bevy of new options," he said.
Meanwhile, the Proton X50 took the lead in the B-segment SUV market last month.
A total of 2,389 units were sold in April, its highest volume for 2025. YTD sales climbed to 7,506 units as well as 420 units ahead of YTD sales from the previous year.
The Proton X90 remains the default choice for buyers looking for a D-segment SUV, with 194 units sold in April, bringing YTD sales to 873 units.
The Proton S70 remains as the dominant C-segment sedan model in Malaysia with another 1,716 units sold in April to boost its YTD total to 6,181 units.
As for Proton X70, its YTD sales stood at 2,839 units after it sold 682 units last month.
As for the other models, the Proton Saga achieved 5,213 sales last month, the Proton Persona finished the month as the second ranked B-segment sedan with 1,328 units
sold while the Proton Iriz posted 290 sales and currently sits fourth for B-segment hatchback sales.
Proton also saw export growth gathered momentum in April as the company had its best month for export sales in 2025.
A total of 520 units were exported last month led by the Proton X50, Proton Saga and Proton e.MAS 7, the latter being previewed at The Car Expo in Singapore during the first weekend of May.
"Export sales remain a vital area of focus for Proton as we view it as the main driver of sales growth in the future. We continue to lay the groundwork for our expansion by adding our EV offerings to our export markets, which will help keep us ahead of the curve when EV adoption takes off overseas," added Roslan.

Musk's X accuses Britain of online safety ‘overreach'
PARIS: Elon Musk-owned social network X on Friday accused Britain's government of 'overreach' with a new law designed to protect children from harmful online content such as pornography. The Online Safety Act's 'laudable intentions are at risk of being overshadowed by the breadth of its regulatory reach,' X said in a post to its Global Government Affairs account. 'A plan ostensibly intended to keep children safe is at risk of seriously infringing on the public's right to free expression,' it added, arguing that the impact 'shows what happens when oversight becomes overreach'. Beyond the law, X criticised a separate new code of conduct for online platforms as 'parallel and duplicative' as well questioning the free-speech impact of a new police unit tasked with monitoring social media. The social network nevertheless last week introduced formal systems for age verification in response to the British law as well as new rules in Ireland and the wider European Union. Its options range from estimating the age of a user based on the date their account was created or their email address, to requesting a selfie whose age would be determined by artificial intelligence, or uploading an official ID document. Media regulator Ofcom says such age checks -- required since July 25 -- must be 'technically accurate, robust, reliable and fair'. Platforms failing to comply risk fines of up to 18 million pounds ($24 million) or 10 percent of their global revenue -- whichever is larger. Serious infringers could be blocked from British territory. The fight over age verification to access sensitive content in Britain echoes months of debate in France over new rules requiring pornography sites to verify users' ages -- a step also required by many US states. While hailed by child safety campaigners, opponents say such requirements risk compromising legitimate users' privacy -- or even exposing them to scams such as identity theft if the personal details used to verify their age were to be hacked. Many people resort to virtual private networks (VPNs) to get around territorial restrictions on access to online content. The most popular free apps on Apple's UK download store since last week have been VPNs, with one, Proton, reporting earlier this week a 1,800 percent rise in downloads, according to British media. - AFP

Proton X50 debuts world's first Bahasa Melayu Voice Recognition system
PROTON has unveiled the world's first Bahasa Melayu Voice Recognition (VR) system, integrated into the newly launched All-New Proton X50. This development positions the national automaker as a global pioneer in intelligent in-car technology, seven years after it first introduced its English-language 'Hi Proton' voice assistant in 2018. At the core of the new Proton X50's advanced digital interface is a 14.6-inch infotainment screen, now capable of understanding and responding to voice commands in both English and Bahasa Melayu. This bilingual feature sets Proton apart as the only car manufacturer in the world to offer such dual-language voice command functionality, providing a more inclusive, intuitive and safer driving experience tailored to Malaysian motorists. The Bahasa Melayu VR assistant has been given the name 'Aisyah'—a personable and approachable female persona designed to evoke the warmth of a companion or trusted family member. The system was developed in just seven months, well ahead of its original year-long schedule. Between October 2024 and May 2025, engineers and language experts worked intensively to develop the technology, collecting over 4,000 unique voice command phrases in both Bahasa Melayu and English. The project, undertaken in collaboration with ACO Tech—a Proton joint venture specialising in smart mobility solutions—involved more than 336,000 manhours. To ensure the system's accuracy across different speech patterns, voice data was gathered from more than 200 native Bahasa Malaysia speakers, evenly balanced between male and female voices. The result is a system that understands various natural language inputs such as 'buka tingkap' and 'bukakan tingkap' (open the window), reflecting the everyday way Malaysians speak. Proton's journey into voice recognition began with the original X70 in 2018, which debuted the Geely Smart Ecosystem (GKUI). In 2022, the X50 became the first connected vehicle in Malaysia to introduce the ATLAS (ACO Tech Local Automotive Services) infotainment operating system, along with an English-based voice assistant optimised for Malaysian usage. This feature allowed drivers to control essential functions—including phone calls, music, navigation, climate control, and windows–without taking their hands off the steering wheel or eyes off the road, significantly improving driving safety. The utility of Proton's voice recognition system continues to be evident in its popularity among users. In June 2025 alone, Proton recorded 2.8 million voice command interactions from 228,046 active users. 'Hello' was the most spoken word, followed by questions starting with 'What'–such as 'What is the weather like today'–and commands using 'Call,' with 43,896, 40,779, and 24,647 instances, respectively. The company has confirmed that future improvements to the VR system will be delivered via over-the-air (OTA) updates, ensuring a continuously evolving and smarter in-car experience. These updates will include expanded vocabulary, smarter natural language comprehension–such as interpreting 'I want to see the sky' to trigger the sunroof–and additional voice options, including male voice recognition. Proton is also exploring the inclusion of other languages and local dialects to further enhance its accessibility. With this groundbreaking feature, the All-New Proton X50 represents not just a step forward in vehicle connectivity but a bold declaration of Malaysian automotive innovation on the world stage.
