Turkish police detain dozens at banned Istanbul Pride march
Footage obtained by Reuters showed police scuffling with a group of activists holding rainbow flags in the city center before rounding them up and loading them into police vans.
Kezban Konukcu, a lawmaker from the pro-Kurdish DEM Party who attended the march, told Reuters that at least 30 people had been taken into custody.
Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Istanbul governor's office had earlier deemed the march unlawful and said groups promoting the event were operating 'illegally.'
Authorities have banned Pride marches in Turkey's largest city since 2015, citing public safety and security concerns.
President Tayyip Erdogan's AK Party has adopted increasingly harsh rhetoric against the LGBTQ+ community over the past decade.
In January, Erdogan declared 2025 the 'Year of the Family,' describing Turkey's declining birth rate as an existential threat and accusing the LGBTQ+ movement of undermining traditional values.
'The primary goal of the gender neutralization policies, in which LGBT is used as a battering ram, is the family and the sanctity of the family institution,' Erdogan said in January.
Rights groups have condemned Turkey's stance. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have warned that government rhetoric and actions are fueling a hostile environment for LGBTQ+ people, contributing to rising discrimination and violence.
Despite the bans, small groups of activists continue to mark Pride Week each year. Organizers say the increasingly aggressive police response reflects broader crackdowns on dissent and freedom of assembly in Turkey. — CNN

Israel Approves Gaza City Offensive Plan, Calls Up 60,000 Reservists
The Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, on Wednesday approved a plan for the full takeover of Gaza City, the enclave's biggest urban hub and shelter to nearly one million Palestinians. Katz also authorized the call-up of nearly 60,000 reservists and extended service for others for the fighting in Gaza. 'As part of the next phase of Operation 'Gideon's Chariots', ~60,000 reserve orders were issued this morning, and 20,000 reservists had their service extended,' the Israeli military said in a statement. A military official told Reuters that the reservists would report for duty in September, adding that the expanded offensive in Gaza would include five divisions and that most reservists would not take place in the Gaza City operation. Earlier this month, the Israeli security cabinet approved a plan to expand the offensive in Gaza, including occupying Gaza City. As a result, the Israeli military has intensified its air strikes and ground operations in Gaza, preparing for a 'prolonged operation of several months that will run into 2026,' according to Israeli army radio. Moreover, the Israeli military announced it would start relocating Gaza residents to the south of the enclave, intensified operations in Zeitoun neighborhood, southeast of Gaza City, and started to concentrate its firepower on nearby Sabra, reported AFP. 'We will be moving into a new phase of combat, a gradual, precise and targeted operation in and around Gaza City,' a military official told reporters. He confirmed that the Israeli military had already begun operating in the neighborhoods of Zeitoun and Jabalia as part of the initial stages. The move comes as Hamas agreed to a new ceasefire proposal by mediators Egypt and Qatar, while Israel has not submitted its formal response, with officials suggesting Tel Aviv will only accept a deal that releases all hostages at once. US Charity Says Suspending Visitor Visas for Gazans Will Harm Wounded Kids
US-based charity HEAL Palestine and other rights groups criticized the State Department's move to suspend visitor visas for Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, according to Reuters. On Saturday, the US State Department announced that it has halted the issuance of all visitor visas for Gazans, pending a 'comprehensive review' of procedures for granting temporary medical visas to Gaza residents. 'All visitor visas for individuals from Gaza are being stopped while we conduct a full and thorough review of the process and procedures used to issue a small number of temporary medical-humanitarian visas in recent days,' the department wrote in a statement posted to X. HEAL Palestine said that the decision would harm wounded children seeking medical treatment on short-term U.S. visas. Loomer's Claims On Friday, Loomer posted several claims alleging that Gazans were being flown to the US with the help of HEAL Palestine, a humanitarian group that evacuates and provides medical care for Injured Gazans —especially children —wounded by Israel's ongoing aggression on Gaza. Through a vast array of posts, Loomer criticized the program, demanding that 'the Trump administration needs to shut this abomination down ASAP before a family member of one of these GAZANS goes rogue and kills Americans for HAMAS.' In a response, HEAL Palestine noted that it does not operate a refugee resettlement program, as claimed by Loomer, but rather a medical treatment initiative funded entirely through donations without any financial support the U.S. government.
