"We are not intimidated by cowardly acts of terror": CM Omar Abdullah after Cabinet meet in Pahalgam
The cabinet meeting was held over a month after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people, including one Nepali national, were brutally killed by terrorists.
This is the first time that a Cabinet meeting was held outside Jammu or Srinagar, since his government took office.
'This morning, J&K cabinet meeting was convened in Pahalgam. Though we worked as per the agenda of our government, we did not have a cabinet meeting in Pahalgam for just an administrative or government function. The agenda of development and happiness in J-K, the agenda to represent the people in J-K will not stop due to bloodshed,' the Chief Minister said during a press conference.
'This is the first time this government has held a cabinet meeting outside Jammu or Srinagar,' he added.
Posting about the meet on X, he said, 'Chaired a Cabinet Meeting at Pahalgam today. It was not just a routine administrative exercise, but a clear message--we are not intimidated by cowardly acts of terror. The enemies of peace will never dictate our resolve. Jammu & Kashmir stands firm, strong, and unafraid.'

CM Abdullah also thanked the people of Pahalgam for raising their voice against the bloodshed on April 22 when Pakistan-sponsored terrorists brutally killed 26 people, mostly tourists.
The Chief Minister said that the Cabinet also discussed tourism in the valley, as it is a big source of revenue for locals in Pahalgam. CM Abdullah said that a group of tour operators from Maharashtra are also in Pahalgam and will also be visiting Srinagar.
'Since we are in Pahalgam, tourism is also on our agenda.. A group of Maharashtra tour operators is here in Pahalgam. They will also visit Srinagar. What encourages us is that earlier the group was going to be of 20-25 people. But, around 60 tour operators from Maharashtra have come to see how the travel and tour industry can be resumed here... I want to thank these people...'
The Pahalgam attack had severely affected the region's tourism, leading to widespread fear among visitors and a sharp decline in bookings and trips. The meeting addressed these concerns and reinforced the government's commitment to combating terrorism and reviving tourism in the area.
Earlier, on May 15, responding to the challenges faced by the tourism sector after the terror attack, CM Abdullah chaired a meeting with the Hoteliers Association at the Civil Secretariat. During the meeting, he assured stakeholders of the government's full support and pledged to consider their suggestions for reviving tourism in the region.
The Chief Minister emphasised the need for a comprehensive tourism revival plan to be developed jointly with the Tourism Department after the conclusion of this year's Shri Amarnath ji Yatra. He proposed that the package include support for hotels, houseboats, shikaras, taxis, handicrafts, and innovative initiatives like unique shopping festivals inspired by those in Dubai.
Abdullah also expressed concern for small-scale entrepreneurs who have recently taken loans to invest in tourist taxis, deluxe minibuses, and guest accommodations, highlighting their vulnerability amid the downturn.
The April 22 terror attack not only resulted in the tragic loss of life but also cast a long-term shadow on Jammu and Kashmir's tourism sector, one of the key contributors to its economy. Many local businesses dependent on tourism have suffered heavy losses since the incident. (ANI)

Kishtwar: Chashoti village in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district has turned into a site of outpouring grief, as families wait anxiously for the bodies of their loved ones who were killed or buried alive under the slush during Thursday's flash flood. At least 60 people have been confirmed dead in the cloudburst that flooded the village that marks the starting point of an annual Hindu pilgrimage - Machail Mata Yatra. As rescue operations entered the third day, the grief turned into anger. A man from Jammu, who is waiting for the bodies of over a dozen relatives, alleged that the rescue site has become a place for photo ops for the politicians, and that's hampering the relief work. "20 JCBs are here, but only two are functioning. The rest aren't. The ministers and MLAs are visiting multiple times. They are not letting the police and army do their (relief) work. It has been three days and only two rocks have been removed. Is this work? Whenever the ministers visit, they turn off the JCBs. Don't we have families?" he told NDTV. Another man chipped in, "Our little children are missing." "If not alive, give us the dead body," urged the man from Jammu, adding, "The MLAs are bringing 10 others with them; they are stopping the (relief) work to get their photos clicked." Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who happened to visit the cloudburst site this morning, arrived at the spot at that moment and enquired, "What happened? Tell me" He reiterated the same complaint to the Chief Minister and urged, "Please give us the dead bodies." "That's what we are doing since the day this tragedy occurred," replied the Chief Minister. As he tried to reassure him, he cut the politician in between, "Sir, meri suno (listen to me). The police and the army are working. Each MLA is getting a minister 10 times, and (saying) 'stop the JCB and click our photos'. Are photos needed everywhere? We are helpless and worried." He told the Chief Minister that 13 members of his family are missing, including his mother and her sister (mausi). Another man said his wife, two children, and two other relatives have gone missing since the cloudburst on Thursday. "The JCB down there - it started after you arrived. Only two JCBs have been working since yesterday. We don't want anything, just give us the dead bodies," appealed the man from Jammu. When told that everyone was impacted by the tragedy, he replied, "If it had occurred to an MLA or minister, if it had happened to you, then action would have been faster." Mr Abdullah had visited the cloudburst site in Kishtwar earlier this morning and taken stock of rescue and relief operations. Speaking to NDTV, he assured that every effort was being made to retrieve the bodies. At least 80 people are still missing, he said.

Kishtwar cloudburst: J&K CM Omar Abdullah reaches Chasoti village to assess damage
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday (August 16, 2025) reached Chasoti village in the Kishtwar district to assess the damage caused by flash floods triggered by a cloudburst that left 60 people dead and over 100 injured. A coordinated rescue and relief operation is underway in the village where 75 people have been reported missing by their families, even as locals and witnesses claim that hundreds may have been swept away by the flash flood and buried under giant boulders, wooden logs, and rubble. The Chief Minister, who arrived in Kishtwar on Friday evening, left for Chasoti by road early Saturday. He is accompanied by his political advisor, Nasir Aslam Wani. A senior army officer, supervising the relief and rescue operation, briefed Mr. Abdullah at the scene about the ongoing operation. The Chief Minister was also provided with a virtual reality headset to understand the extent of damage caused by the flash floods. Tragedy struck Chasoti — the last motorable village en route to the Machail Mata temple — around 12:25 p.m. on August 14. It flattened a makeshift market, a community kitchen site for the pilgrimage, and a security outpost. At least 16 houses and government buildings, three temples, four water mills, a 30-meter-long bridge, and over a dozen vehicles were also damaged in the flash flood. The annual Machail Mata Yatra, which began on July 25 and was scheduled to conclude on September 5, remained suspended for the third consecutive day on Saturday. The 8.5-kilometre trek to the 9,500-foot-high shrine starts from Chasoti, around 90 kilometres from Kishtwar town.

Jammu and Kashmir's opposition parties have criticized Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's proposed signature campaign. The campaign aims to restore statehood. Opposition leaders call it a betrayal of public trust. They accuse Abdullah of normalizing the 2019 decisions. These decisions revoked Article 370. Sajad Lone suggests a resolution in the assembly. They are not even admissible.'The PC chief also referred to the 2007 signature campaign 'Safr-e-Azadi' of the jailed Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front leader Yasin Malik. 'The signature campaign for independence was carried out by Yasin Malik also. How far did that campaign go,' Lone asked. He accused Abdullah of showing, 'disregard, disdain and contempt for the assembly that has made him the CM.''I beg you. Please stop this childish and immature attitude. We will support any campaign unconditionally. But please ensure that a resolution from the state assembly is also passed and sent to the Supreme Court,' said Lone, adding, 'Don't set the stage for denial of statehood. Act like a leader. Don't throw tantrums…This is a real ideological battle. This is not a video game.'The PC legislator from Handwara, who served as a minister in the last PDP-BJP government, asked Abdullah to explain 'whether he was shielding and protecting the state BJP and giving them the luxury of not taking a position on statehood, by not passing a resolution on statehood?'The PDP legislator from Pulwama, Waheed Para said that Abdullah owes an apology not a signature campaign for normalising 5th August. 'With 50 MLAs behind him, he has reduced the fight for J&K's statehood to token gestures, after seeking votes door-to-door on the promise of restoring pre–5th August status,' said Para, adding, 'This is not just retreat, it is betrayal.' The PDP leader said that the people of J&K gave Abdullah a historic mandate to fight for Article 370 and statehood, not to stage political theatre. 'If he has already surrendered, he must admit it and apologise to every citizen of J&K for selling promises he never intended to keep,' said Para.
