(Reuters) -Liverpool manager Arne Slot said it is completely normal for his side to be viewed as favourites to retain their Premier League crown, citing last campaign's success rather than their close-season transfer activity.
Liverpool, who won the Premier League last season to secure a record-equalling 20th English title, have bolstered their squad with the arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and others.
The Merseyside club, however, have also had Trent Alexander-Arnold leave for Real Madrid, Luis Diaz move to Bayern Munich and Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, while their Portuguese forward Diogo Jota died in a car crash last month.
"It's completely normal that we are one of the favourites, because we won it last season," Slot told reporters ahead of Sunday's FA Community Shield showdown against Crystal Palace.
"And we brought in good players. Like all the other teams did, by the way. This is what makes this league so nice."
Liverpool had only signed forward Federico Chiesa from Italian side Juventus in the close-season window last year.
"Every team in the Premier League is spending money. So if we are only favourites because we've spent a bit, I would see that as weird because we've lost a lot as well. But that we are favourites because we won it last season and we played so well, that's clear," Slot said.
"And the ambitions haven't changed, because the ambition of this club is always to compete for every trophy."
Liverpool, eyeing a 17th Community Shield title, face FA Cup winners Palace at Wembley.

Cricket-Coaches trust Australia's hard-hitters, says David

Cricket - Fourth One Day International - South Africa v Australia - SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium, Centurion, South Africa - September 15, 2023 Australia's Tim David in action REUTERS/Siphiwe Sibeko (Reuters) -Australia's T20 batters are backed by their coaches to go "all guns blazing" and will likely continue their attacking ways, middle order blaster Tim David said. David produced a sparkling 83 off 53 balls to guide Australia to a 17-run win in the series-opener against South Africa on Sunday and a record ninth victory in succession. "We've been playing together as a group now for a while, so there's not a great deal of instruction from the coaches,' said player-of-the-match David in Darwin. "They trust the players. "We trust ourselves to go out there and we understand the game situation. We make decisions on the fly because that's the nature of T20 cricket. "I think if you'd watched our guys bat over the last period, wherever they bat around the world and when they play for the Australian team, it's close to all guns blazing. "You can probably expect to see that a little bit from our team. That's how we think we play best." David has been in top form, racking up 215 runs in his past three T20I innings, which includes a 37-ball century against the West Indies in St Kitts last month. His hot streak has revived queries on whether he might consider reviving an ODI career that lasted only four matches against South Africa in 2023. However, David was not included in the ODI squad for South Africa and poured cold water on the idea of a return in the near future. "That's not part of the plan for me," David said. "To be honest, the things I've been building towards is the T20 World Cup next year and the major tournaments that are leading up to that. "Honestly, I don't operate much further than the next day ahead." Australia will look to seal the three-match T20 series against South Africa with another win in Darwin on Tuesday. Rugby-Crusaders to show off new roofed stadium in Christchurch 'Super Round'

(Reuters) -Super Rugby Pacific champions Canterbury Crusaders will host the return of the competition's 'Super Round' in Christchurch next season and show off their new home stadium. Super Round, which sees all teams descend on a single city for a weekend of matches, was scrapped last season following the demise of the Melbourne Rebels, who hosted previous editions at their home stadium. The concept's return will see the Crusaders open the 11th round of the 2026 season on the Anzac Day weekend (April 24-26) at the new One New Zealand stadium. Anzac Day is a public holiday celebrated in Australia and New Zealand, commemorating military service members who fought and died during wartime. The One New Zealand stadium, which boasts a roof and 25,000-seat capacity, has long been in the making following a 2011 earthquake that devastated Christchurch and ruined the Crusaders' old home ground, Lancaster Park. The Crusaders have played out of Rugby League Park since the earthquake. "This event is bigger than rugby, it's a celebration of One NZ Stadium coming to life," Crusaders boss Colin Mansbridge said in a statement on Monday. Super Rugby Pacific have yet to confirm the full draw for the weekend but the Queensland Reds will play the Auckland Blues and the ACT Brumbies face the Wellington Hurricanes on April 25. Liverpool undone by Palace's penalty perfection in epic Community Shield final

LONDON, Aug 11 — Crystal Palace twice came from behind to stun a new-look Liverpool and win the Community Shield for the first time on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Wembley on Sunday. New signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong scored for the Premier League champions, but Palace responded through Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr before winning an error-strewn shootout 3-2. Mohamed Salah blazed over from the spot, while Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott were denied by an inspired Dean Henderson as Palace built on winning their first ever major trophy by beating Manchester City in May's FA Cup final. 'We were on the same level as Liverpool and it was a big performance. I'm proud of the team,' said Palace boss Oliver Glasner. The traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season was given extra significance after a summer marked by tragedy for Liverpool. Forward Diogo Jota was killed in a car accident alongside his brother Andre Silva. Reds legend Ian Rush and Palace chairman Steve Parish laid wreaths on the side of the pitch before kick-off, while the Liverpool end was awash with banners and flags paying tribute to the Portuguese international. A minute's silence, however, had to be cut short due to disturbances in the crowd. Jota's death has dampened the excitement over Liverpool's transfer spending spree to build on a squad that romped to a record-equalling 20th league title last season. All four of their new signings at a cost of £260 million (RM1.48 billion) — Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Frimpong and Milos Kerkez — started. Ekitike's role this season could depend on whether Liverpool are successful in their pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. But the Frenchman — signed from Eintracht Frankfurt last month for an initial £69 million — did his case to be Slot's preferred number nine no harm at all. Wirtz also bagged his first assist for the Reds when Ekitike spun onto the German's pass and fired into the far corner after just four minutes. Palace were making their first ever appearance in the fixture but the Eagles again showed their ability to match one of the Premier League's giants over 90 minutes. Mateta missed a glorious chance to level when he failed to beat Alisson Becker when one-on-one. Mateta coolly sent Alisson the wrong way from the penalty spot to equalise. Liverpool's players were sporting a 'Forever 20' emblem, referencing Jota's now-retired shirt number, that they will wear all season. The Liverpool fans had risen to chant Jota's name as the game entered the 20th minute when their side retook the lead. Frimpong's chipped cross caught out Henderson and flew into the far corner. Ekitike wasted a great chance for his second early in the second half from another Wirtz pass as this time he fired over. However, Slot's new-look side are still to find the right balance between attack and defence as has been evidenced during pre-season. 'The combinations look sometimes sharper now,' said Slot on the difference in his side to last season. 'We are able to create more but we are conceding at the moment more as well. If you want to compete to win the league, you cannot concede these chances. 'We conceded too much today to win the game.' Palace were a constant threat with balls in behind the Reds' defence and levelled again 13 minutes from time. Sarr sped onto Adam Wharton's through ball and calmly slotted past Alisson for his fourth goal in seven games against Liverpool and sent the game to a shootout without extra-time. Youngster Justin Devenny was the unlikely hero as he blasted the winning spot-kick high past Alisson, showing Salah, Mac Allister and Elliott how it is done. — AFP
