Gordon aiming to end career on high with Hearts and Scotland at World Cup
Craig Gordon is aiming to end his illustrious career on a high by having a good season with Hearts and helping Scotland to the World Cup.
The veteran goalkeeper, who will turn 43 in December, has signed on for another year at Tynecastle in a bid to help his boyhood club improve on a disappointing campaign.
He also has his sights set on a swansong in North America where the World Cup will be held next summer and believes the current squad have enough to reach the biggest stage of all.
The national team haven't qualified for the tournament since 1998, and Gordon believes it would mark the perfect end to a storied career.
Hearts will take on newly promoted English Premier League side Sunderland to mark his testimonial year on July 26.
Speaking about his decision to keep playing for another year, he said: 'As last season wore on, towards the end, when things started to calm down a bit and we were down to one game a week, the workload was still manageable.
'For most of the first part of the season, I thought that would be my last season, but as the season progressed I still felt good and decided I still had another year left in me.
'So, it was a good decision, I think. I am excited again to get back to pre-season and ready to go again.
'It wasn't a great season for anybody at the club, so there was always that in the background, but personally for me I didn't think it was too bad, I had some good moments throughout the season and I think not having that good last moment, to be able to go out on a high, I am still really motivated to get out there and do as best as I can and be the best goalkeeper I can be.
'So there was that, and with Scotland as well the World Cup is going to be decided over the next six games within four or five months of the season starting, so it's not that far away.
'That was all the reasons I needed to keep going and keep giving it my very best.'
Gordon first signed for the Jambos in 1999 and made his professional debut while out on loan at Cowdenbeath as a teenager in 2001.
In a career that has spanned 24 years, he has also played for Sunderland and Celtic, winning three Scottish Cups, five Premiership titles and five League Cups while helping the Hoops to a historic quadruple treble between 2017 and 2020.
He has also earned 81 Scotland caps and insists he is motivated as ever for further success domestically and at international level.
He said: 'I am motivated on both fronts. There have been a lot of changes at Hearts, and there's a new management team coming in. Also, we have six games with Scotland, and I believe in that squad.
'I think we can beat anybody on any given day, so we have got great ability there and the chance to get ourselves to a World Cup.
'It will be difficult, there are other good teams in the group, but I still think we have that opportunity and it's an exciting time at Hearts with the new manager and a host of new players.
'So there is a lot to be positive about on both fronts.'

Red Roses launch national yarn art campaign to inspire a generation ahead of Women's Rugby World Cup 2025
England Rugby stars Abby Dow and Tatyana Heard have today called upon the nation to show its support of the Red Roses as they aim for World Cup glory on home soil this summer. Dow and Heard are leading a creative initiative inviting youngsters to get into rugby union and back the England team by contributing to spectacular Red Rose yarn art takeovers across the country. A sea of knitted and crochet rugby themed artwork is expected to be displayed across community rugby clubs, host cities, and local communities, and Red Roses winger Dow is encouraging the nation to get involved with their local project. 'Whether you are a lifelong rugby fan, a dedicated crafter, or someone who just wants to play a part in something special, we are encouraging fans across England to get creative and show their support this summer,' Dow said. 'Crochet is a mindful hobby that we use as a squad to bond and create meaningful connections. We want fans new and old to connect with our sport through rugby crochet and knitting, while being part of an inspiring national movement. 'We are in a golden age of women's sport and we feel a responsibility to maximise this incredible opportunity to inspire the next generation of female players and fans across the summer.' Inspired by the Red Roses love of crochet as a team bonding activity, the yarn art takeovers form part of the RFU's engagement activities designed to inspire female players and deliver a lasting legacy for Women's Rugby World Cup 2025. Fans wishing to get involved and contribute to displays across their local communities, clubs and cities can download crochet patterns via the England Rugby website. The patterns available are a red rose, bunting and a rugby ball square. Full details of national display points and submission deadlines will be available via the RFU website HERE. Supplied creations will then be stitched together by dedicated teams of volunteers ahead of a national unveiling of Yarn Art in early August.

St Mirren consider swoop for keeper who played for Premiership rivals last season to be their new No1
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ST MIRREN are considering a swoop for Swansea City keeper Andy Fisher. The Buddies were hoping to persuade Middlesborough shot-stopper Zach Hemming to return to Paisley on a permanent deal after two successful loan stints. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Andy Fisher in action for St Johnstone last season Credit: Kenny Ramsay But as SunSport revealed yesterday, Hemming has agreed to move to English League Two outfit Chesterfield after the clubs agreed a £150,000 deal. Now the Saints have had to turn to a list of other potential new number one targets. And SunSport understands Fisher, who spent the second half of last season on loan with relegated St Johnstone, is high on their wishlist. The 27-year-old, who came through the youth ranks at Blackburn Rovers, joined new Rangers boss Russell Martin at Swansea on a four-year deal from MK Dons back in January 2022. With just six months now left on his contract, St Mirren are hoping they can persuade the English goalie, who made 18 appearances in Perth, to make an immediate switch to the Paisley club. The Buddies are also confident they will be able to announce the signing of Richard King in the near future. The Jamaican international has been busy representing his country in crucial World Cup qualifiers against Guatemala and the British Virgin Islands. While the 23-year-old still has three Concacaf Gold Cup group stage matches to tackle later this month, Saints don't foresee any issues with getting international clearance for the highly-rated Cavalier stopper once those games are completed. King will help to fill the gap left by Richard Taylor, who let his contract run down at the end of the season. The 24-year-old defender remains in the hunt for a new club. SunSport revealed earlier this week that the £2million Nordsjaelland attacker was on Brendan Rodgers' wishlist. The Hoops have now made a move but face some stiff competition in the race for the 23-year-old's signature from clubs in the Bundesliga and MLS. Hibs had already kicked off their summer transfer business by the time their push for a place in European competition came to a successful end. The first part of a unique summer transfer window came to a close earlier this week as Austrian goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger completed a move to Easter Road two months after Aberdeen midfielder Jamie McGrath put pen-to-paper on a pre-contract agreement to become part of David Gray's squad. There have also been some departures confirmed as Nohan Kenneh and Max Boruc both left the club after their contracts came to a close and experienced striker Dwight Gayle brought an end to his playing career. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A number of former Hibs players have also completed moves during the last week - and Drey Wright joined that list on Thursday when he agreed a two-year deal with Premiership rivals Dundee. The 30-year-old started his career with English club Colchester United before making a free transfer switch to St Johnstone during the summer of 2018. Wright moved on to Hibs two years later and made over 50 appearances before returning to the Saints on a free in July 2022. Former Hibs star joins Dundee After his departure from McDiarmid Park was confirmed earlier this month, Wright has now joined Dundee on a two-year deal and he revealed former Celtic and Scotland manager and current Dee technical director Gordon Strachan has played a key role in his decision. Speaking to the official club website, he said: 'It feels really good. As soon as I knew of the interest I was keen on the move and I spoke to a few people at the club and I'm really happy to get it over the line now. The move just felt right, I spoke to Gordon Strachan a few times and I felt it was a good fit with me for this time and I'm excited about the direction the club is going. 'My message to the Dundee supporters would be just to back us and for me personally to show me some faith at the start and I can repay that. The game is made a lot easier if your fans are onside. I've noticed that strong support playing at Dens over the years, it's hard for the opposition when the Dundee fans are right behind the team, so I would just ask the fans to back us as much as you can.'
