Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Chenab rail bridge on Friday (June 6) in Jammu and Kashmir. He will also flag off two specially designed Vande Bharat trains between Srinagar and Katra.
Touted as the world's highest railway arch bridge, the Chenab rail bridge is a part of the 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. It could be a game-changer for India. Here's how.
Chenab bridge
Built at a cost of about Rs 1,400 crore between Bakkal and Kauri in J&K's Reasi district, the Chenab bridge stands 359 metres above the river bed level. It is 35 metres taller than the Paris' Eiffel Tower and roughly five times the height of Qutub Minar.
The architectural marvel has been built across a gorge of the Chenab Bridge in Reasi.
It is part of the all-weather railway line – USBRL – that will pass from Jammu to the Kashmir Valley.

The construction of the Chenab bridge was greenlit in 2003. However, there were several challenges to building the bridge due to the region's harsh terrain, safety concerns and court cases.
One of the biggest obstacles was to construct it without blocking the flow of the Chenab River.
Engineers had to walk on foot or by mule to work on the infrastructure project during the early stages of construction. 'Logistics was another major challenge given the inaccessibility of the location and the narrow roads. Many of the components of the bridge were built and fabricated on site,' Giridhar Rajagopalan, deputy managing director of Afcons Infrastructure, told BBC.

The bridge's design and construction have been done by a joint venture comprising Afcons Infrastructure, South Korea-based Ultra Construction & Engineering Company, and VSL India.
With a lifespan of 120 years, the Chenab bridge can resist high-velocity winds with speeds up to 260 kmph, extreme temperatures, earthquakes, and hydrological impacts if water levels rise.
The bridge, which can support trains running up to 100 km per hour, is also blast-proof as Afcons claims it can withstand high-intensity 'explosion of up to 40 kg of TNT' and trains could continue to run even if there was damage to a pillar, albiet at reduced speeds.
Why Chenab bridge is a big deal for India
The Chenab railway bridge will be a big strategic boost for India. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project will provide all-weather rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country.
Earlier, the only land route linking the Valley to the rest of India was a 300-kilometer Srinagar-Jammu national highway. However, it has to be shut down often in winter when roads are blocked due to snowfall. Landslides also make the Jammu-Srinagar national highway inaccessible.

'The rail bridge will permit the transport of military personnel and equipment around the year to the border areas,' Rajagopalan said to BBC.
The Chenab rail bridge , built as part of this project, will provide a safe and reliable way of crossing the Chenab River, which is vulnerable to flash floods and landslides.
Experts say the rail link could boost Kashmir's economy by facilitating trade. It will offer a hassle-free transport of goods such as apples, dry fruits, handicrafts, etc. to other parts of India.
The inauguration of the Chenab rail bridge also assumes significance as it comes in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, wherein 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed.

The J&K government has since tried to promote tourism, which took a hit because of the April 22 massacre. A direct train between Jammu and Srinagar would be cheaper and reduce travel time, which is likely to give a fillip to tourism.
The travel time between Srinagar and Jammu will come down to between three and three-and-a-half hours from the five to six hours experienced during road travel.
The Chenab rail bridge could bring not just tourists but also hope to Kashmir.

India's next goal is to be among world's top defence exporters, says PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (June 6, 202%) said Operation Sindoor demonstrated the strength of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), and pledged to make India one of world's top defence exporters. 'Today, the world is recognising India's defence ecosystem,' Mr. Modi said in his speech at Udhampur's Katra. Mr. Modi said India had emerged as a leading defence exporter over the past decade, and 'the next goal is to position India among the world's top defence exporters'. 'The faster India moves towards this objective, the more employment opportunities will be generated nationwide, benefiting millions,' he said. 'Choose products made in India' The Prime Minister said that just as the nation honoured its armed forces on the borders, it must also uphold the pride of 'Made in India' in the market, ensuring that India's strength is reflected in both defence and commerce. He said the recent military success was due to the armed forces' trust in 'Make in India'. 'Every Indian must now emulate their commitment. The Mission Manufacturing initiative, announced in this year's budget, was aimed at accelerating India's manufacturing sector,' he said. He called upon young innovators and entrepreneurs in Jammu and Kashmir to join this mission. 'India needs their modern thinking, innovation, ideas, and skills to elevate national security and economic growth,' he added. Calling upon every Indian to make a commitment to prioritise products made in India, Mr. Modi said that these goods are a true reflection of the hard work and dedication of fellow citizens. 'Choosing Indian-made products is the real service to the nation, strengthening the economy and empowering workers,' he added.

'I'll tell you why not': Shashi Tharoor snubs Trump's mediation claim over ceasefire

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is leading the Indian diplomatic outreach programme in the Americas, dismissed the idea of any mediation between India and Pakistan, stating that there "can be no negotiation with unequals." Tharoor, while responding to a question during a conversation at the Council on Foreign Relations, said that negotiations 'cannot happen, especially when one side consists of terrorists and the other their victims.' "Mediation is not a term that we are particularly willing to entertain. I'll tell you why not. The fact is that this implies, even when you say things like a broker or whatever, you're implying an equivalence which simply doesn't exist," Tharoor said, as quoted by news agency PTI. "There is no equivalence between a country that provides a safe haven to terrorism, and a country that's a flourishing multi-party democracy that's trying to get on with its business," Tharoor added. Also Read | Shashi Tharoor's fresh 'don't test India's patience' warning to Pakistan over terror attacks The Congress leader's remark came amid repeated claims by US President Donald Trump that he "helped settle" the tensions between India and Pakistan. Since May 10, when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a 'full and immediate' ceasefire after a 'long night' of talks mediated by Washington, he has repeated his claim over a dozen times that he 'helped settle' the tensions between India and Pakistan. Details here Trump also claimed that he told the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours that America would do a 'lot of trade' with them if they stopped the conflict. However, the Indian government has already rejected Trump's claim of mediation between India and Pakistan to stop military actions from both sides. About two weeks after the horrific April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir in which 26 civilians were killed, India launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7. 2 Militants Killed In Gunfight With Security Forces In Arunachal Pradesh

ITANAGAR: Security forces neutralised two militants during a fierce gun battle in Arunachal Pradesh's Longding district, bordering Myanmar, officials said on Friday. A Defence spokesperson said that the slain militants were suspected to be from the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-K-YA) faction. The gunfight occurred on Thursday when during the patrolling party of the security forces came under attack from militants believed to be operating across the porous India-Myanmar border in Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh. 'In response, the security forces effectively retaliated against the attack,' the spokesman said, adding that during the intense firefight, the armed cadres withdrew across the International Border towards Myanmar. The NSCN (K-YA) faction has been active in cross-border operations despite ongoing peace negotiations with various other Naga outfits including dominant faction NSCN (IM). Meanwhile, on May 14, ten militants were killed during an encounter with the Assam Rifles in southern Manipur's Chandel district, which shares the unfenced border with Myanmar and a large cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot. The cache comprised seven AK-47 rifles, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, a M4 rifle, and four single-barrel breech-loading rifles, ammunition and other war-like stores. On April 27, three militants of the NSCN-K-YA faction were killed during a fierce gun battle between the security forces and the extremists in Arunachal Pradesh's same Longding district. Meanwhile, the Army and Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Assam Police, earlier apprehended a wanted top cadre of the NSCN-KYA from Assam's Charaideo district. The NSCN-K-YA has earlier served an extortion notice of Rs 20 lakh to the public sector oil major Oil India Limited (OIL). The notice was signed by the outfit's self-styled Major, Tha Aung and sent to OIL's office in Manabhum, located in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The OIL has its operational site at the Manabhum reserve forest in eastern Arunachal, and the thickly forested reserve forest areas fall under both Changlang and Namsai districts. On April 29, three militants of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) were killed during an encounter with the security forces in Assam's mountainous Dima Hasao district. However, the faction of the NSCN they belonged to is yet to be known. Two AK series rifles and a pistol were recovered from the forested areas. The NSCN-K-YA has not signed a ceasefire agreement with the Centre. Four northeastern states – Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km) and Mizoram (510 km) -- share 1,643-km unfenced border with Myanmar.
