TikTok blocks use of popular hashtag after concerns it promotes eating disorders

On June 1, TikTok blocked search results for 'Skinnytok' following a rising trend of dangerous content promoting eating disorders on the platform and concerns raised by European regulators
TikTok has implemented a worldwide ban on a popular hashtag for its link to the promotion of extreme diets and exercise regimes. The company said the block is part of a regular review to 'address evolving risks' on its platform but comes after concerns were raised by European regulators.
As of June 1, TikTok has blocked search results for 'SkinnyTok' and removed the hashtag globally. Content associated with the hashtag typically included videos targeting young women promoting extreme thinness and unhealthy ways to lose weight.

"[We] have blocked search results for #skinnytok since it has become linked to unhealthy weight loss content," TikTok spokesperson Paolo Ganino said in a statement issued on Monday, June 2. Ganino said the move is part of a "regular review" of TikTok's safety measures "to address evolving risks".

Users who now search for the hashtag will be directed to mental health support. The ban follows a boom in the trend in recent months, which saw the platform flooded with videos for and by young women glamourizing eating disorders like anorexia.
The rise in the dangerous content reached the attention of both the European Commission and the French digital regulator Arcom. The European Commission investigated the 'Skinnytok' trend after France's Digital Minister Clara Chappaz lobbied for an investigation and created a public petition entitled to 'Stop Skinnytok'.
After news of the ban was made public, Chappaz shared her excitement on X. 'Skinnytok is OVER!' the minister posted. 'This is a first collective victory. I salute it. However, the fight to protect our children online doesn't stop there. And I won't give up. Banning social media before 15 is my priority.'
The protection of kids online is growing priority as countries consider proposals for new EU rules to curb children's social media use. TikTok's duty to guard against the harmful effects of the SkinnyTok hashtag were a feature of a call between the EU's Consumer Protection Commissioner Michael McGrath and TikTok CEO Shou Chew, as reported by Politico .
Currently any search for 'skinnytok' or even 'skinniertok' yields the following message: 'You're not alone. If you or someone you know has questions about body image, food or exercise – it is important to know that help is out there and you are not alone. If you feel comfortable, you can confide in someone you trust or check out the resources below. Please remember to take care of yourselves and each other.'

The message is followed by a help phone number and a link to the platform's Eating Disorder Safety Centre page.

While it's a step forward, the ban will not necessarily mean the 'Skinnytok' trend is over. The TikTok community has a strong track record of pivoting with agility to navigate new regulations and user guidelines with new hashtags and code words.
Still, social media platforms are being forced to take more accountability for the wellbeing of young users. A legal responsibility for online services to make their sites safe for children will finally come into force in this summer. Under the Online Safety Act, social media firms will be ordered to ensure they tame toxic algorithms, take faster action on removing harmful content and introduce proper age checks on their platforms.
Tech companies will now be expected to begin assessing the risk of harm to children on their platforms after Ofcom's final children's safety codes were published today. From July these protections will be fully enforceable and services that don't comply could face serious enforcement action from Ofcom.

A vet has urged dog-lovers not to get a certain dog breed in the future, claiming it is an 'animal welfare issue' Dogs are the most beloved pets in the UK and there's one breed that's particularly popular. ‌ The French Bulldog is one of the most popular dog breeds in the UK, although according to The Kennel Club, figures have dipped slightly in recent years. Taking a look at registrations of French bulldog puppies between early 2018 and mid-2019, there was an 8% drop. That being said, the breed remains of of the nation's favourites. ‌ This dog breed is recognised for being playful, intelligent and adaptable, thriving with couples, families and single people. Despite the broad appeal, a vet named Ben has urged dog-lovers not to get a French Bulldog in the future. ‌ He regularly shares pet advice, information and his own opinions on social media. In a recent post on TikTok he said: "I am a practising small animal vet and I want to use the time that I have your attention for in this video to convince you never to get a French Bulldog, a bulldog or a pug. "Yes, they make wonderful companions but the fact that the French Bulldog is the most popular dog breed in America right now is a massive animal welfare issue because these breeds are not anatomically, physiologically or behaviourally normal dogs, and that causes a lot of suffering." ‌ Ben noted that studies have documented the lifespan for French Bulldogs to be as low as four-and-a-half years and seven to seven-and-a-half for bulldogs and pugs. The animal expert explained that these breeds are "not a wise choice" for those wanting a long-term canine companion, adding: "They're really expensive not just to buy but to own. Pet insurance premiums are extremely high because of all of their predictable, well documented health problems." He claimed that due to the costly insurance, many owners opt out and when a major health issue arises, they can't afford treatment, often resorting to large loans or credit card debt. The small animal vet further revealed that male dogs of this breed often have difficulty mating, leading to breeders resorting to artificial insemination. He added that many French Bulldogs cannot give birth naturally, meaning if you get one of these puppies, it's likely the mum has had to be "anaesthetised and cut open just for you to have the dog that you want to have." ‌ In his TikTok video caption, he wrote: "America's most popular dog breed is a health disaster. But information is power. "This is my attempt to convince as many people as possible who see this video not to get one of these dogs in future." ‌ Despite this, he recognised that there are dogs of the breeds he mentioned in his video that need rescuing and require loving homes. He encouraged owners to care for their flat-faced dogs as best they can. The PDSA backs this up, saying: "Frenchies are a flat-faced breed, which can often cause breathing problems and means they overheat quickly especially when they exercise in warmer weather. If you're looking for a dog to go on long walks with, a Frenchie probably isn't the best breed for you. In general, we'd recommend considering a different breed or a cross-breed to try and reduce some of the problems Frenchies have. If you're still looking specifically for a Frenchie, always make sure the parents of your pup have had all the necessary screening and try to pick a dog with a longer nose and wider nostrils." Several dog owners responded to the video, with one sharing: "I had my beautiful Frenchie Luna put to sleep in May just shy of her 14th birthday. Too many back street breeders around because they increased in popularity. I wouldn't buy one now, but don't regret the wonderful life we had together." Erin* has been using weight loss jabs for over six months. Desperate to lose 20kg, the 33-year-old first turned to Mounjaro at the end of last year. However, although it helped her shed the pounds, it also made some of her hair fall out, so the retail worker decided to seek out another treatment. 'Like everyone on weight loss injections I was all over social media looking at reels and TikToks to see what everyone else was using,' Erin tells Metro. 'That's when I heard about 'Reta'.' A new weight loss jab, Reta – real name Retatrutide- is making big waves on social media. Despite TikTok community guidelines making clear that the platform does not allow content that facilitates the trade or marketing of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, including weight loss or muscle gain products, the hashtag #reta has been used more than 44,000. On Instagram, there's nearly 100,000 mentions. Documenting their progress online, some fitness influencers have declared 'Reta is the Meta', while one brags that after using Retatrutide he didn't eat for most of the day and even just the smell of a burger he cooked at 3pm left him feeling full. @davetrains @Overdrivepre ♬ Mozart/Requiem 'Lacrimosa'(1394506) – Mint Coming from the same manufacturers of Mounjaro, this latest jab making waves is believed to be up to three times stronger than Ozempic in terms of tackling food noise and suppressing appetites. 'Everyone seems to have such incredible effects from it, not even a normal type of hunger like you get on the traditional weight loss jabs. The fact it's so fast acting made me want to give it a go,' explains Erin. 'It was easy enough to buy via some click through links. It costs me around £180 for 10mg which I inject a small amount of weekly. I have been on it a couple of weeks, now.' Every time she uses Retatrutide, however, Erin knowingly takes her life into her hands – as it's not approved for use. She's buying it illegally from unlicensed suppliers who have no authority on how it should be used. 'I know it's a risk, but there's been so much success on social media, it seems quite a small one,' Erin insists. As it's yet to be licensed by the MHRA – the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency – experts are desperately warning Retatrutide users they are playing with their lives by buying the unapproved drug online. 'The issue is, we don't really know what the risks are and we don't know the dosing either,' Dr Helen Wall, from the Oaks Family Practice in Bolton, tells Metro. 'It's certainly not just a stronger version of Ozempic and Mounjaro. It's working on a different pathway, so that needs exploration in terms of, what the safety is, what the risks are and what the side effects are. 'It's been developed by Eli Lilly, who are a reputable, well known pharmaceutical company, so ultimately, it may well end up on the market, but at the moment it's still in clinical trials.' Dr Helen explains: 'It belongs to the class of drugs called triple hormone receptor agonists; which means it works on three different metabolic pathways. All three either suppress your appetite, stabilize your blood sugar or your insulin response, and make you feel full, and boost fat burning. 'Doing all three in one pathway means Retatrutide looks more potent than existing treatments like Ozempic and Mounjaro. Ozempic is a GLP 1 agonist only, and Mounjaro works on two of the pathways, so Retatrutide will probably the first one that would work on all three metabolic pathways.' The results from the early stages of trials suggest people are losing up to almost a third of their body weight, but Dr Helen says that itself comes with risk. '30% is obviously a lot more than the existing weight loss injections but that's expected because of the metabolic pathways it works on,' she explains. 'As with plenty of drugs though, there's lots of illegal counterfeit versions circulating online and you never really know what you're getting.' When Metro got in touch with TikTok about the prevalence of Retatrutide on the platform, a spokesperson told us they had reviewed the hashtags shared and removed content that violated Community Guidelines, as well as banning the hashtag #retatrutide. Erin, however, inists she's glad she discovered the controversial jab – despite suffering some side effects: 'I had some heart palpitations when I first went on it, but I made dinner for the kids the other day and even the smell of lasagne cooking in the oven made me feel so full – like I'd had a big Christmas dinner.' While the trial results are yet to be published, early reports suggest Retatrutide may increase heart rate, says Fr Helen. 'In addition, there's also some concerns being raised about increasing potential bone fracture risk and kidney stones. She warns that any illegal use mixed with a blase attitude could result in serious long term health issues. 'You're running the risk of all sorts of problems. You could end up with electrolyte imbalance, which is dangerous for your heart rhythm. 'You can go into sudden cardiac arrhythmia, and in a worst case, you could suddenly die. We know pancreatitis is a real issue with these medications, and it can be very serious. 'It's simple science too, if you're losing weight that rapidly, it'll be at physical cost. You're looking at potential electrolyte imbalances and issues with bone health to name just two. We also don't even know what dosing is safe – that's part of the trial process. More Trending 'I've seen plenty of patients when I worked in hospitals with life threatening pancreatitis, and sadly, some of them do die. 'Medications take a long time to be approved for a reason and until we get the official trial data and approvals no one should be buying illegal versions. 'Put bluntly, right now, Retatrutide is really unsafe.' Lilly UK tells Metro: 'Retatrutide is an investigational molecule that Lilly is studying for the treatment of obesity – it is in phase 3 clinical trials and is not available to patients outside of these trials. Retatrutide has not been reviewed or approved by the FDA, EMA, or any regulatory agency anywhere in the world, and therefore at this time no one can sell retatrutide for human use. Any product falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet approved by the FDA, like retatrutide, may expose patients to potentially serious health risks. Lilly aims to take all necessary actions to safeguard public health. We continue to support international educational efforts by joining forces with non-governmental organisations such as the World Health Organisation, World Health Professionals Association and World Customs Organisation, to warn patients and healthcare professionals about the dangers of buying medicines from unregulated outlets.' This follows Donald Trump's call for US pharmaceutical companies to address price inconsistencies compared with European markets as he slammed 'freeloaders' relying on Americans to pay more for medicines. As a frantic scramble for the drug gets under way, Paige, 30, reveals why she is hoarding as much as possible before the price rise hits in September, in a move that could create a shortage for others. Admin worker Paige lives with partner, sports coach Ads Jenson, 38, in Birmingham, West Midlands. She says: Signing up to a second online chemist last Friday, I could barely catch my breath as I frantically typed in 'Mounjaro'. Stress pulsated through my body as I clicked 'buy again'. When I saw the price was the same as last month - £160 - I burst into joyful tears. I was buying 7.5mg and had been panicking that it was going to cost two or even three times as much after learning overnight the price had suddenly gone up. Online weight loss forums exploded with panicked users fretting they wouldn't be able to afford it. Some people said they were heartbroken. I understood how they felt. I've been on the weight loss drug since June, having battled the bulge for most of my life. At my heaviest aged 18 I weighed 22st and wore size 24 clothes. Undercover at a black market 'skinny jab party' Hamburgers, chips and pizza, Chinese and creamy Indian curries and sugary soda were my go-to meals. I was a yo-yo dieter trying everything from the milkshake or soup diets, food replacement meals, keto and Atkins. I'd lose a few pounds and reward myself with takeaway and cake. I underwent a failed gastric bypass in June 2018 but developed a hernia and 'weight recidivism', which is where you regain weight after surgery. I plateaued at 16 stone. I needed a different plan so weight loss jabs were a Godsend for me. Stockpiling health risks Professor Claire Anderson, Royal Pharmaceutical Society President, says: 'Weight loss medicines should only ever be used exactly as prescribed, with medical supervision. 'We strongly advise against stockpiling as it can create unnecessary pressure on supply and may prevent others getting the treatment they need. 'It's unsafe to attempt to alter or divide doses by using pens of a different strength than prescribed. Taking these medicines in a way that has not been recommended by a healthcare professional can put your health at risk. 'Anyone worried about the cost or availability of these medicines should speak to their pharmacist or prescriber for advice on safe alternatives. 'We strongly discourage people from trying to source medicines from unregulated suppliers, as they may provide fake or harmful products which are unsafe and carry serious health risks.' Initially I was prescribed Ozempic privately but I switched to Mounjaro as it was rumoured to be more effective. The initial dose in January cost £130 and even then I'd struggle to put aside enough cash to buy the jab. But I went down to 9st 4lbs and a size 8 in five months. The 'food noise' I'd suffered from all my life vanished. I was able to go to the gym and buy nice clothes. I was no longer the 'fat friend'. I intended to stay on it for life… I need to. But like more than a million other UK users, my world came crashing down on Friday when price hikes were announced overnight. Mounjaro mayhem and a race to borrow cash and stockpile ensured. I had already stretched myself to afford what I am on at the moment, but some months slipped £550 into debt because I wasn't working overtime. But even so I knew I had to buy more before the cost spiralled. My partner Ads supported me, knowing how much it meant to me. For me stockpiling a supply before the price almost doubles is the difference between staying slim or piling on the pounds. 4 Paige weighed 22st at her heaviest before she plateaued at 16st, pictured Credit: Supplied 4 She managed to drop 7st on the weight loss drug 'These are not cosmetic treatments' Andy Morling, MHRA Deputy Director of Criminal Enforcement, says: 'We see people offering weight loss medicines for sale as a quick fix, without a healthcare professional's prescription, from beauty salons, websites and on social media. "These are not cosmetic treatments; they are powerful medicines that can only be legally and safely dispensed against a prescription issued by a healthcare professional.' Although I look thin, if I stop taking it for even a week, the food thoughts come back and the weight creeps on. I don't overdose on it, I take it sensibly but I am not naturally light-boned. So last weekend I spent £700 on my credit card, Klarna and borrowed from Ads, to finish building a Mounjaro supply before the hikes hit in September. Most people have two pharmacies prescribing privately. Some months my supplier didn't have the medication, so I used an alternative provider. I opened accounts with a number of online prescribers, filled in a quick form and even had the option to inform my GP or not. Some didn't even request proper ID. It's not illegal, because of Britain's strict patient confidentiality laws under the Data Protection Act and UK GDPR. The online pharmacy can only see my health history if I give consent and then I get to choose what parts they can access. By then I'll have seven pens worth around £2,000 which I will use sparingly and should last me seven months. After that I don't know what I will do. I have two choices. Stop the jab and get fat. Or stay slim and face financial ruin I have two choices. Stop the jab and get fat. Or stay slim and face financial ruin. It's lose-lose. The wealthy stay skinny. The rest of us face bailiffs, bulges or the black market. I don't want to go down that route but I understand why people have been freaking out, saying they are 'heartbroken' on online forums and eking out the last of their pens. More than ever people are talking about buying illegally. Of course that isn't safe - you don't really know what you're getting. I have my main online pharmacy and a backup one. But I know other users who have signed up to even more. I've already been juggling bills and falling behind on gas and electricity just to be on Mounjaro. I can't afford to stockpile. But it's essential now - it's obesity discrimination and it makes me sick.
