City leaders to announce takedown of group connected to drug trafficking in south Baltimore
Baltimore City leaders, including Mayor Brandon Scott, and Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown will announce the takedown of a group who they allege is connected to violence and fentanyl overdoses in South Baltimore.
The takedown is one of multiple recent busts as a result of Baltimore's Group Violence Reduction Strategy.
In a major takedown dubbed
'Operation Tornado Alley'
, police targeted four criminal organizations operating in Southwest Baltimore.
The six-month-long investigation that ended in Nov. 2024 involved collaboration with between city and federal law enforcement led to the recovery of nearly $400,000 in cash, large amounts of cocaine and fentanyl, and the seizure of nearly 70 guns.
The evidence also included 15 stolen cars. After the takedown, police said they put a stop to a planned murder.
The bust resulted in the indictment of nearly 40 individuals, ranging from ages 16 through 60. Investigators said the group operated in the 2000 block of West Pratt Street; the 500 block of Millington Avenue; the 1700 block of Lemmon Street; and the 2800 block of Edmondson Avenue.
Baltimore's GVRS program has been credited as
being a driving force
behind the reduction of violent crime in the city. Baltimore City Mayor Scott says the program has helped Baltimore achieve significant drops in gun violence.
Homicides went down 23% in 2024, with a total of 201 compared to 261 homicides in 2023.

Man, woman shot in Baltimore's Fells Point neighborhood
A man and a woman were injured in a shooting in Baltimore's Fells Point neighborhood early Friday, according to police. Around 3:22 a.m., a 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman walked into a hospital with gunshot wounds, officers said. Baltimore reports drop in crime Despite the recent shooting, Baltimore has continued to see a drastic decline in crime over the past few years. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott reported a 23.6% drop in the city's homicides, with 55 cases reported so far in 2025, compared to 72 cases reported at this time in 2024. In April, the number of monthly homicides hit an all-time low in Baltimore, with only five cases reported, according to the mayor. In April 2024, there were 13 homicides reported in the city. Violent crime rates in the city have also seen progress, with nonfatal shootings down 43% since 2020. So far in 2025, there have been a total of 141 crimes reported in the Fells Point neighborhood, according to Baltimore Police data. The crimes were mostly theft and robbery cases. Cleanup underway after 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel leaks into Baltimore's harbor
BALTIMORE (WDCW) — Emergency crews in Baltimore are working to clean up roughly 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel that leaked into the harbor on Wednesday. Maryland officials said the spill started around 11 a.m. local time, when fuel began leaking from the Johns Hopkins Hospital's facility in East Baltimore. While investigating the spill, officials learned that the fuel began leaking into the marina from the facility, which was about 1.3 miles away. The Maryland Department of the Environment said the water affected by the spill had been tinged red because of the dye in the oil. Officials added that the leak would not impact drinking water in the area. Officials said the U.S. Coast Guard and a private contractor are working to clear the oil from the water by using oil absorbent materials and skimmers that will feed into a 4,000-gallon pump truck.
