Why a top Cabinet secretary was glaringly missing during Trump's marathon meeting with his closest advisers

Daily Mail08-07-2025
One of the most prominent and publicly-recognized members of President Donald Trump 's Cabinet was missing from Tuesday's meeting at the White House.
Health and Human Service Secretary Robert F. Kennedy was glaring absent from the table at the president's marathon sit down in the Cabinet Room.
Kennedy was on international travel, a spokesperson said.
'Due to long-planned international travel, the Secretary couldn't attend today's Cabinet meeting. However, he remains in constant contact with HHS leadership and today took decisive action by declaring a public health emergency for the State of Texas,' an HHS spokesperson told Daily Mail.
No additional details were given.
Trump held the sixth Cabinet meeting of his administration.
Other prominent secretaries - including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth - were present to chat with the president about the work of his administration.
Kennedy is one of the most notorious and controversial cabinet members.
His controversial views on vaccines has led to some accusing him of spreading misinformation on the issue.
In fact several leading medical groups are suing Kennedy over changes to federal COVID-19 vaccine recommendations.
The suit - which includes the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Physicians and the American Public Health Association - was filed in federal court and asks for a reversal of Kennedy's decision to remove pregnant women and healthy children from the COVID-19 vaccine schedule.
Kennedy has pushed a Make America Healthy Again agenda - a play off Trump's campaign slogan of Make America Great Again.
But even that plan came under fire when the news outlet NOTUS reported that seven of the more than 500 studies cited in the HHS report - which decried America's food supply, pesticides and prescription drugs - did not appear to have ever been published.
The administration shrugged it off as 'formatting issues.'
President Trump has been supportive of his health secretary.
Kennedy is also moving to ban dyes in food and fluoride in water.
The son of the late Attorney General Robert Kennedy made his own presidential bid as a Democrat before dropping out of the contest and endorsing Trump.

Top Trump aide says India financing Putin's war in Ukraine by buying Russian oil

A top aide to Donald Trump accused India of aiding Vladimir Putin 's war in Ukraine by purchasing Russian oil as tensions between New Delhi and Washington soared over ties with Moscow. India is lately facing relentless American pressure over its relations with Russia, a longstanding defence and trade partner. Just last week, Mr Trump threatened New Delhi with unspecified penalties over and above a new 25 per cent import tariff for buying oil and weapons from Russia. Mr Trump, who had listed ending the war in Ukraine a top priority for his second presidential term, has been threatening sanctions on countries trading with Moscow after accusing Mr Putin of stalling ceasefire talks. The US president has also resumed sending weapons to Ukraine. Mr Trump is threatening to impose a 100 per cent tariff on exports to the US from any nation purchasing Russian oil in defiance of Western sanctions unless Moscow agrees a peace deal with Ukraine and ends the war. 'What he said very clearly is that it is not acceptable for India to continue financing this war by purchasing the oil from Russia,' White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller told Fox News, referring to the US president. "People will be shocked to learn that India is basically tied with China in purchasing Russian oil. That's an astonishing fact." Mr Miller's remarks constitute Washington's strongest criticism yet of one of its key partners in the Indo-Pacific. 'India portrays itself as being one of our closest friends in the world, but they don't accept our products. They impose massive tariffs on us,' he said. 'We also know they engage in a lot of cheating on immigration policies that is very harmful to American workers.' The White House aide said Mr Trump sought a 'tremendous relationship' with India and its leader Narendra Modi but 'we need to get real about dealing with the financing of this war'. 'All options are on the table, to deal diplomatically, financially and otherwise with the ongoing war in Ukraine so we can achieve peace,' Mr Miller said. Russia is the leading oil supplier to India, the world's third-largest consumer of the commodity, accounting for some 35 per cent of its imports. Russia exported nearly 1.75 million barrels of oil to India per day between January and June this year, a rise of about one per cent from a year ago, Reuters reported. And despite Mr Trump's threats, Indian officials said the country would keep purchasing oil from Russia. 'These are long-term oil contracts," a government source told Reuters on Saturday. "It is not so simple to just stop buying overnight.' Justifying oil purchases from Russia, another official said India's imports from Russia helped avoid a global surge in prices, which remained subdued despite Western curbs on the Russian oil sector. Unlike Iranian and Venezuelan oil, Russian crude is not subject to direct sanctions and India is buying it below the current price cap fixed by the European Union, the official told Reuters.

Texas Democrats flee state to block GOP plan to redraw electoral map - and get threatened with arrest

Texas House Democrats fled the Lone Star State on Sunday in order to frustrate Republican attempts to redraw its electoral map to their own advantage ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The Texas House Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting advanced the GOP's proposals on Saturday, setting up a full House vote this week. The conservatives hold a majority in the chamber, as they do in the Texas Senate, meaning the gerrymandering to revise the state's 38 congressional districts would likely pass. It would create five extra right-leaning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, potentially expanding the congressional GOP's majority and easing the passage of President Donald Trump 's legislative agenda. Faced with that prospect, 51 opposition Democrats departed for Illinois, New York and Massachusetts over the weekend in an attempt to deny the Republicans a quorum, with two-thirds of the state's 150-member legislative complex required to be in attendance for business to proceed. 'We're not here to have fun,' Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu told reporters in Carol Stream, Illinois, flanked by members of his delegation and Governor JB Pritzker as he spoke. 'We're not here because this is easy, and we did not make a decision to come here today, we did not make a decision lightly. 'But we come here today with absolute moral clarity that this is the… absolutely the right thing to do to protect the people of the state of Texas.' The representatives have the support of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in employing the tactic, which Texas Democrats also deployed in 2003 and 2021, with DNC Chair Ken Martin saying in a statement: 'The DNC is proud to support these legislators in standing up and showing real leadership. 'We will fight alongside them to stop this anti-democratic assault. And, after this fight is done, we're coming full force for the Republicans' House majority.' House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries likewise expressed support, saying the group was showing 'courage, conviction and character.' The desperate measures will not come without personal consequences for the lawmakers involved in the exodus, each of whom stands to be fined $500 for every day they are away for breaking quorum. They could also face arrest. 'Democrats in the Texas House who try and run away like cowards should be found, arrested, and brought back to the Capitol immediately,' Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, fumed on social media. 'We should use every tool at our disposal to hunt down those who think they are above the law.' Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows, also a Republican, wrote: 'The Texas House will be convening at 3.00pm tomorrow [Monday]. If a quorum is not present then, to borrow the recent talking points from some of my Democrat colleagues, all options will be on the table…' Texas Gov. Greg Abbott presented the rebels with the same deadline and warned they will be removed from office if they fail to show up. For his part, Illinois Gov. Pritzker, speaking alongside Wu, said: 'We're going to do everything we can to protect every single one of them and make sure that – 'cause we know they're doing the right thing, we know that they're following the law.' The redistricting push in question would have an impact on the Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, Houstin and Rio Grande Valley areas and could inspire retaliatory measures by Democrats in blue states. Redistricting typically takes place once a decade to account for natural population shifts and is overseen in many states by non-partisan committees, although not in Texas.

Trump ally's post of muslims praying in NYC park ignites controversy

By Trump loyalist Charlie Kirk (pictured) has sparked debate after sharing a video showing hundreds of Muslims participating in prayer in New York, calling the Democrat city the 'third world'. The controversial political activist shared the footage that showed a large group of people gathered in Washington Square Park in New York City for prayer. 'Import the third world, become the third world', Kirk posted to his social media while sharing drone footage of the gathering, along with the caption 'This is New York City, not the Middle East.' It remains unclear when the video was captured, but Muslims gather in the public park every year to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the end of the holy month of Ramadan - which occurred on March 30 this year. Supporters of Kirk, who has advocated for Christian nationalism, backed his post - with many pointing out that the park and nearby arch was founded to commemorate avid Christian and founding father, George Washington. However, some people in Kirk's comment section said that the scenes were not problematic - and just a sign of the multicultural diversity of the city. 'I'm not sure why anyone is concerned about this, am I missing something?' one person said. Another user came to their defense: 'What is so wrong in this? Let them pray. There are people of good faith in that crowd who would wish you are blessed regardless of which religion you belong to. Respect other religions.' Besides the Islamic prayer that took place, other religions have also hosted public prayer throughout New York City. Last September, thousands of Jewish people in the city gathered to sing Oseh Shalom, the Jewish prayer for peace amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. One of the most iconic symbols of the city, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, is also put on public display in the lead up to Christmas. The annual Islamic gathering in downtown Manhattan each Eid was started by leaders of the Islamic Center at nearby New York University. The center's director Imam Khalid Latif previously told The New York Times : 'We were just trying to conceptualize space that could fit our growing numbers and be a memorable experience. It can be very affirming knowing that in a city as large as New York, you're not by yourself, you're not alone. And it helps people also around us who we share space with, who are our neighbors, to know that we're Muslim, and we are here as well.' It comes after Kirk stirred up outrage after saying women should only go to college to find a husband. He had been taking questions at a Turning Point USA event when a 14-year-old girl asked for his advice on attending college and the pros and cons of higher education. After the girl mentioned that she was interested in pursuing a career in political journalism, Kirk asked all the young girls in the audience to raise their hands if their top priority is to 'get married and have kids.' Many of them did raise their hands, including the girl who asked him the question. 'Interestingly, I think there is an argument to bring back the MRS degree,' he said, referencing the slang term for women who go to college solely to find a husband. 'No seriously. And just be clear that's why you're going to college. Don't lie to yourself, like, "Oh, I'm going and studying sociology." No you're not, we know why you're here and that's okay!' Kirk said, grinning. He specifically cited universities in the Southeastern Conference, many of which are known for being party schools, to find a man. 'That's a really good reason to go to college actually, especially an SEC school. You will find a husband if you have the intent to find a husband at Ole Miss,' he said. 'I say college is a scam, but if you find your life partner that's actually a really good reason to go to college.' His comments did not go over well with critics after a clip of his answer spread online. 'This poor girl. She asks Charlie Kirk about her goal to be a political journalist and he tells her to go get an Mrs degree,' author and columnist Jill Filipovic posted on X. 'Charlie Kirk telling a 14-year-old to go to college just to land a husband? That's not advice - it's a time warp,' another user added.
