Ex-girlfriend charged in Baton Rouge boat fire incident
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Baton Rouge Fire Department arrested a woman accused of setting her ex-boyfriend's boat on fire.
Firefighters responded around 7:45 a.m. on May 16 to the 8200 block of Greenwell Springs Road, where a boat fire had already been extinguished. According to BRFD, a witness reported seeing Zhanea Lee, 30, identified as the victim's ex-girlfriend, near the boat shortly before the fire began.
The same witness told investigators that Lee had previously made multiple threats, including one to set the boat on fire.
Surveillance footage later confirmed Lee's vehicle entering the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex, parking near the boat, and then leaving quickly while the fire was burning, BRFD said.
The boat, valued at approximately $6,000, was parked just feet from an apartment building and was deemed a total loss.
Lee was arrested and charged with aggravated arson. She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Tuesday, May 27.

EDITORIAL: Going all the way to the big event
Jun. 11—Last weekend, a student from Lawrence County took part in a major event and getting to do so was an honor in itself. Joseph Keffer, who will be entering the sixth grade at Chesapeake Middle School his fall, traveled to the Washington, D.C. area, where he took part in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. Getting to the bee first required Keffer to win his individual school bee, then to qualify, through a test for the regional bee, held in Athens, and then win that competition. Along the way, he also won the county's spelling bee in December. In the national bee, Keffer made it to the third round, tying for 100th place, putting him in the top half of the bee's 243 competitors. It was an impressive showing for him and, with three more years of eligibility for the bee left, he has a good chance to do it again. And this is the third time in the last 15 years that our county has had a student make it to the national event, with Felicity Jenkins and Meredith Dunlap preceding Keffer. It is a testament, not just to their abilities, but of the education they received from our local schools. We congratulate Keffer for his achievement this year and look forward to what else he accomplishes. WBRSO deputy hurt in crash on I-10, officials say
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office confirmed that one of their deputies was hurt in a crash on Wednesday, June 11. The sheriff's office said the crash took place a little after 11:15 a.m. on I-10 near mile marker 152. According to WBRSO, the deputy is believed to have minor injuries and is seeking medical attention.
