Investigation underway after baking soda spills on I-110 South Friday afternoon

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — An investigation is underway after the Baton Rouge Fire Department (BRFD) and its Hazardous Materials unit responded to reports of baking soda being dumped on the interstate Friday, June 6. The powder was found scattered across multiple southbound lanes of I-110, just south of Airline Highway near the Weller Avenue exit. The substance was also found on several nearby surface streets. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and the Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) helped shut down impacted lanes of travel. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LADEQ) was notified and responded to the scene. Louisiana State Police were also notified. BRFD's Hazardous Materials team conducted field testing of the substance, and after multiple presumptive tests, it was identified as sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda. There is no threat to public safety, officials confirmed. The scene has been turned over to LADEQ, and BRFD units will be clearing shortly. The interstate is expected to remain closed while cleanup efforts are underway. Appropriate agencies will be conducting an investigation to determine how the material was released and to identify the responsible party. Ex-girlfriend charged in Baton Rouge boat fire incident

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Baton Rouge Fire Department arrested a woman accused of setting her ex-boyfriend's boat on fire. Firefighters responded around 7:45 a.m. on May 16 to the 8200 block of Greenwell Springs Road, where a boat fire had already been extinguished. According to BRFD, a witness reported seeing Zhanea Lee, 30, identified as the victim's ex-girlfriend, near the boat shortly before the fire began. The same witness told investigators that Lee had previously made multiple threats, including one to set the boat on fire. Surveillance footage later confirmed Lee's vehicle entering the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex, parking near the boat, and then leaving quickly while the fire was burning, BRFD said. The boat, valued at approximately $6,000, was parked just feet from an apartment building and was deemed a total loss. Lee was arrested and charged with aggravated arson. She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Tuesday, May 27. Baton Rouge man charged with aggravated arson after setting fire to family's home

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A Baton Rouge man has been arrested and charged with aggravated arson after allegedly setting fire to his family's home following a dispute. On Feb. 13, the Baton Rouge Fire Department investigators responded to a residential fire on Cable Street. Authorities found that the fire was intentionally set in several parts of the house. Jermar Lee Crawford, 23, is accused of starting the fire following an argument with his mother. The fire caused an estimated $20,000 in damages. BRFD said Crawford is the homeowner's son. Since the fire occurred near an occupied neighboring structure, BRFD said Crawford faces a charge of aggravated arson. He was booked Friday into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. No injuries were reported in the incident. The case remains under investigation by the Baton Rouge Fire Department. Hurricane season is just a month away. Are you prepared? Baton Rouge man charged with arson after house fire kills dog

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A Baton Rouge man was arrested after being accused of intentionally setting a fire that claimed the life of a dog. According to the Baton Rouge Fire Department, Chavelle Holliday, 42, was arrested on charges of simple arson, unlawful communications and simple criminal damage to property. On Jan. 16, fire investigators responded to a structure fire in the 2000 block of Kaufman Street. Upon arrival, investigators conducted an exam of the scene. The fire resulted in total loss and the death of a dog. According to the BRFD, the fire was determined to have been intentionally set. An affidavit states investigators interviewed with the victim who said she and Holliday have had previous incidents which led to a restraining order against Holliday. The victim could not confirm Holliday's role in the fire but believed his involvement was likely, considering their history. On March 24, investigators obtained recordings of Holliday admitting to burning the victim's home and damaging the victim's vehicle. Holliday was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. No bond amount has been set, according to jail records.
