
Wolverhampton university tackles water leakage with AI satellites
Water loss is a persistent issue for the UK industry, with an estimated 19% of the supply lost before it reaches consumers, according to Water UK, costing £3.2bn annually across the utilities sector.The university said traditional detection methods, such as acoustic monitoring and tracer gas detection, are labour-intensive and inefficient, typically locating fewer than one leak per day per crew and costing between £250 and £2,000 per inspection.
Other satellite-based technologies have improved detection rates, but high operational costs and image refresh rates of between seven and 14 days still limit their effectiveness.Using the £1.3m funding from water regulation service Ofwat's Innovation Fund, the team said they can create high-frequency imaging and have fresh data every six hours with sharper resolution to pinpoint leaks.The AI-powered detection then reduces costs and enables rapid deployment beyond the UK, the university said.Professor Mohammad Patwary, director of the university's digital innovation and solution centre (DISC) and project lead, said: "This Ofwat initiated opportunity marks a major innovation leap for the UK, enhancing the water industry's efficiency and infrastructure longevity, while creating a platform for critical sectors, like energy, transport, and telecom, and positioning the UK as a leader in LEO satellite-driven innovation and productivity."The team will use six satellites as part of the project called Space Eye and liaise with several other water firms in the UK.

I can use it to stay on track of my sleep schedule, track my calories, and even do general watch things — like check the time. As someone who considers herself a tech nerd, I have tested a large number of wearables — and yes, I upgrade almost every year. The latest wearable that's on my wrist is the Samsung Galaxy Watch8, and it's the AI powerhouse I didn't know I needed. I tested it for close to two weeks to fully integrate this watch into my life, including testing the new antioxidant level feature and AI fitness tracking. Samsung Galaxy Watch8 review The Samsung Galaxy Watch8 is extremely lightweight and easy to sleep with on, even though its initial design felt bulky on my wrist. In fact, it's 11 percent thinner than the last gen and feels considerably lighter. The design itself is sleek and simple, with a round cushioned frame and easy-to-attach silicone bands. The glass display is punchy and durable — it withstood regular wear and tear and the occasional bump as I was moving around the gym and my home. Overall, it's a classic design, with a circular glass display that's both minimalistic and durable. The real power, though, lies inside the watch. Samsung has always been on the forefront of AI, and this watch truly achieves that. The watch has Gemini Assistant integrated (yes, Google 's proprietary voice assistant), so you can easily ask your AI companion any pressing questions or even check on your calendar. I also used it to ask questions like 'What are the best Mexican restaurants near me?' or 'Which workout classes can I take in my neighborhood?' There's also another exciting feature for runners: built-in AI coaching for marathon trainers and beginner runners. It's meant to coach you and is customized to your athletic level. You'll start by doing a 12-minute run assessment; from there, your watch will gauge your level. You'll then get a plan geared to improve your endurance and train you for your next marathon. It's a fun one, especially if you like to run — I unfortunately hate running and prefer cycling as my cardio. I did, of course, try the running coach, though, and truth be told it was tough to keep up with! It really pushed me out of my comfort zone, and the added pacing updates let me know how slow or fast I was going. All in all, it was very fun to test, and I like to think it improved my pace as a whole. Running does not scare me as much as it used to, and I do seem to enjoy it just a little bit more than before! That's a win for me. It's also great that this is not a paid feature — unlike its competitors — which makes this accessible to everyone who purchases the watch. There are two more new features that make this a well-rounded watch for me — the vascular load feature and the antioxidant test feature. For vascular load, you'll need to wear the watch to bed for at least three nights. This will then essentially test your circulatory system's health. Mine stayed steady consistently, which felt good. You can also get additional insights through the health app, like what to do to keep your vascular load low — which is what you want. Apart from vascular load, wearing the watch at bedtime will also get you other metrics like your daily energy score, sleep stage analysis, and bedtime guidance (which is honestly not something I used, as my bedtime changes daily). The other new feature that was super fun to test is the antioxidant feature. You do need the Samsung Health Monitor app on your mobile to get this to work, but once you have it all downloaded, all you need to do is press your thumb down to the back of your watch and it will measure your current antioxidant levels. Mine kept saying 'very low' and asking me to eat more fruits and veggies — instead, I ate a bag of Skittles. If you're a health junkie, the Samsung Galaxy Watch8 is the right wearable for you. From antioxidant measures to sleep scores and more, this watch keeps you on track for a healthier you — if you follow the measurements and actually act on them (instead of continuing to devour candy like me). And yes, if you log in seven days of sleep data with your smartwatch, you can get your personal sleep animal — I apparently sleep like a walrus. Apart from health stats and a comfy fit, Samsung also upgraded the battery life on the latest gen. It easily lasts a full day without the need for a charge — Samsung says it should last 30 hours before it needs to juice up again. The watch itself is snappy, responsive, and easy to use. You can play with the tiles on your watch, edit them or rearrange as you see fit, and the large, clear screen is easy to read both outside and indoors. It's just as customizable as you need a smartwatch to be, and feels tactile enough without taking up too much real estate. Our Verdict I absolutely adore the Samsung Galaxy Watch8. It's quick to set up, offers massive health functionality, and still manages to be extremely lightweight and unintrusive. This is the watch for those who have put wearables off for the longest. It's smart and intuitive, and offers the kind of snappy performance that actually makes your life easier. I was a skeptic when it came to Android watches, but this gen's Watch8 might've just won me over for good. How We Test I wore the Samsung Galaxy Watch8 consistently for a period of two weeks. I used it during workouts, sleep time, and integrated it into my daily routine. I tested its effectiveness when it came to checking my health, as well as how comfortable it was for my day-to-day routine. I also played around with the health features (including antioxidant level stats) on a daily basis to see how they compared over time. I only recommend the Ultra if you're someone who lives on the go and wants to track health stats no matter where you are — otherwise, this pick is a little too bulky for daily use in my opinion.

Missing out on £54m research fund ‘undermines' northern universities, say mayors
Universities in northern England face having their contribution to the economy undermined after they missed out on a share of £54 million, eight mayors have warned. A total 12 institutions have access to the money to help attract 60 to 80 leading researchers into the UK. But the mayors, including Labour's Andy Burnham in Greater Manchester, Steve Rotheram in Liverpool and Tracy Brabin in West Yorkshire, have called on the Government to build a 'new funding model that truly reflects the strengths and aspirations of all of our regions'. They warned that investment was 'concentrated disproportionately in London and the South East'. According to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the money is intended to bolster industrial strategy by helping universities to back research in sectors such as life sciences, defence and the creative industries. Beneficiaries include Oxford and Cambridge universities, the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, which is also based in Cambridge, Imperial College London and the University of Birmingham. Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland, the University of Strathclyde in Scotland and Cardiff University in Wales are also listed as being in line for money from the fund. But northern universities' 'exclusion from the Global Talent Fund undermines their contribution to the UK's economic success, as well as the Government's stated commitment to rebalance our economy', the mayors wrote in a joint statement. They said: 'We are deeply disappointed that universities in the north of England, some of the best and brightest in the world, have once again been overlooked in the allocation of national innovation funding, despite their research credentials. 'The North is home to some of the UK's most innovative, high-performing universities. These institutions drive the development of life-changing technologies and work hand in hand with industry to create good jobs and grow the economy.' The cross-party group added: 'As mayors, we stand ready to support the Government in its mission to make the UK a global science superpower. 'But to truly deliver on that mission, investment in innovation must reflect the full breadth and depth of talent that exists across the country, not continue to be concentrated disproportionately in London and the South East. 'We are calling for urgent reform to ensure greater transparency and fairness in how public research and innovation funding is allocated. 'Strategic funds like this must support national growth, and that means recognising and investing in the full potential of the North of England and the 15 million people we collectively represent. 'We urge UK Research and Innovation to think again, review this disappointing decision and work together with us on creating a new funding model that truly reflects the strengths and aspirations of all of our regions, to build a brighter Britain that works for us all.' Reform UK mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire, Luke Campbell, and Conservative mayor of Tees Valley, Lord Houchen of High Leven, joined the Labour politicians – who also include the South Yorkshire, North East and York and North Yorkshire mayors Oliver Coppard, Kim McGuinness and David Skaith – in signing the statement. Backing the fund last month, science minister Lord Vallance said 'genius is not bound by geography'. He continued: 'But the UK is one of the few places blessed with the infrastructure, skills base, world-class institutions and international ties needed to incubate brilliant ideas, and turn them into new medicines that save lives, new products that make our lives easier, and even entirely new jobs and industries.'

Tourists issued warning as new airport scanners are mistaking these common items for BOMBS
Tourists travelling through Gatwick this summer are being asked an unlikely question when their hand luggage is flagged as a potential security risk by the airport's new scanners: 'Have you got an apple in your bag?' The CT scanners - short for Computed Tomography - were introduced at the major UK hub in March across all of its security lanes, meaning passengers no longer need to put liquids in plastic bags or remove electrical items. However, while the technology is state-of-the-art - and designed to finally ease the congestion that's been present since 2006, when the rules on liquids over 100ml were first introduced - it seems it can't identify that an apple isn't likely to pose a major security risk. Tourists jetting away on summer holidays in recent weeks have faced lengthy waits at security - with the humble granny smith and other varieties often found to be the culprit for the additional checks, including swabbing hand luggage. A Daily Mail reporter travelling through the North Terminal on July 26th revealed that a long line of frustrated flyers looked bemused when security staff asked those waiting for hand luggage facing extra checks if they were carrying an apple. They said: 'It was the last thing I expected to hear but I was asked "are you carrying an apple?" by the security staff member charged with going through my rucksack.' The reporter added: 'I didn't realise I had an apple in there but sure enough he fished one out, offering little explanation except saying "The scanner doesn't like apples"'. It isn't just fruit that sparks over zealous responses; another Daily Mail journalist says they've had a similar experience - this time with a book-style daily diary. The journal has, they said, triggered the CT scanners on multiple occasions at different airports - with security staff telling the frequent flyer it's because 'it's dense'. Gatwick Airport declined to comment. The CT screening uses 3D technology to identify potentially harmful materials and were described as 'cutting edge' by the airport when they were launched in March as part of a multi-million-pound project to cut security screening times - and bolster efforts to avert potential terrorist attacks. It's been almost a quarter of a century since a foiled terrorist attack prompted airports around the world to introduce a ban on liquids over 100ml. On August 10th 2006, more than 20 people were arrested after a suspected plot to blow up several planes leaving the UK - potentially using liquid explosives carried on-board in hand-luggage - were uncovered by police. In the immediate aftermath, hand luggage was banned completely overnight. No liquids could be carried into the cabin and laptop computers and other electronic gadgets had to be packed in suitcases in the hold. By November 2006, many of the rules were relaxed but the 100ml liquid ban remained until this year, when the new technology was rolled out across airports in the UK, with Gatwick, Heathrow, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford, Luton, Newcastle, Southend and Teesside now all using CT scanners. While liquids still have to be under 100ml in size, they no longer have to be separated out from other luggage in transparent plastic bags. At the time the CT scanners were introduced at Gatwick, Cyrus Dana, head of security, said: 'More than 95 per cent of passengers already pass through security at London Gatwick in under five minutes. 'This is a positive change, with the scanners allowing our passengers to travel through the airport with more ease. 'As we continue to grow, our top priority is the safety of our passengers and the security of the airport. 'This cutting-edge technology ensures a safe and robust experience for our passengers.'
