5 rare animals to spot in Indian rainforests

Time of India24-06-2025
India's rainforests are some of the most biodiverse regions in the world, home to countless species found nowhere else on Earth. These rich hotspots stretch from the lush Western Ghats to the dense forests of the Northeast.
The green and misty landscapes grow and team up with life, and much of it is still largely unknown to the outside world. Indian rainforests are like stepping into a living, breathing wonderland for someone who loves wildlife or is just curious about nature's hidden treasures.
While many are familiar with tigers and elephants, it's the rare and lesser-known species that often surprise. These animals may be hard to spot, but they play an interesting role in the ecosystem, and seeing even one in the wild can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Here are 10 rare animals that are spotted in the wild
Galaxy Frog
Tiny, elusive, and sparkling like a night sky, the galaxy frog is a true rainforest gem. It was discovered only recently in the Western Ghats, and its speckled skin resembles stars scattered across a dark canvas. This endangered amphibian prefers moist leaf litter and is a symbol of the rich, yet fragile, biodiversity in India's forests.
Sri Lankan Frogmouth
With its wide eyes and unique, frog-like beak, the Sri Lankan frogmouth is one of the strangest birds you'll ever see.

Found in the dense forests of the Western Ghats, this nocturnal bird is a master of disguise. Its dull, leaf-like plumage makes it almost impossible to spot in the wild.
Malabar Grey Hornbill
Found only in the Western Ghats, the Malabar grey hornbill is known for its loud calls and dramatic flight. Unlike its more colourful cousins, this hornbill has a muted grey appearance, but its unique casque and behaviour make it interesting to observe.
It plays a vital role in forest ecology by dispersing seeds.
Malabar Gliding Frog
The Malabar gliding frog is one of the largest tree frogs in India. It uses its webbed feet to glide between trees, almost like a little green parachutist. Living high in the canopy of rainforests, it's a rare sight and a true indicator of healthy forest ecosystems.
Nilgiri Marten
The Nilgiri marten is India's only marten species and one of the most difficult mammals to spot in the wild. Highly flexible and quick, this sleek, chestnut-coloured carnivore lives in the higher altitude forests of the Western Ghats. With its sharp senses and secretive nature, it remains a mystery to most.

Advance booking for safari at R'bore begins today

1 2 Jaipur: People can book tickets in advance online for safari at Ranthambore Tiger Reserve from Aug 1 on the forest department's upgraded online platform. The bookings will be from Oct 1 to Dec 31 department has released comprehensive guidelines detailing the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for bookings. Chief conservator of forests (Wildlife) and field director Anoop KR said that bookings must be made through Bookings for Jan 1 to March 31 begin on Nov 1, while April 1 to June 30 slots open on Feb 1. Gypsy bookings are available seven days beforehand, and canter safaris open at 10am one day prior to morning shifts and at 10am on the same day for evening shifts, he said. Identity verification protocols have been established. A senior official explained, "Foreign tourists must enter their complete passport number but are not required to upload a copy. Indian nationals must upload a clear, legible copy of their Aadhaar card with all digits visible. At the entry gate, visitors must present an original photo ID—such as a passport, Aadhaar card, or student ID—with the full identification number. If the name entered during booking differs from the one on the uploaded ID, the system will issue a warning, and the booking will only proceed after necessary correction." The administration has implemented strict regulations to prevent misuse. Each photo ID permits only one booking per safari shift. Using false identification or attempting multiple bookings with the same ID will result in blacklisting of both the ID and associated mobile number. The use of autofill tools, bots, or technical manipulation will face legal consequences under RTR administration rules. An official stated, "Seats cancelled three days before the safari will be available at 10 AM under the 'instant quota' on a sharing basis. Cancellations within three days will also be redistributed under this quota for current bookings."

Silchar MP raises demand for direct flight to Delhi in Parliament

Silchar: Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya made a strong pitch in the Lok Sabha for the introduction of a direct flight between Silchar and New Delhi, reviving a long-pending demand from the Barak Valley region. Participating in a debate in the Lower House on Wednesday, the BJP MP underscored the urgency of enhancing air connectivity between the remote northeastern city and the national capital, calling it a "necessity rooted in both practicality and regional equity." Currently, air passengers from Silchar are forced to travel to Delhi via either Kolkata or Guwahati, resulting in travel times that often exceed five hours. Suklabaidya termed the lack of direct connectivity as not only an inconvenience but also a financial and emotional burden for frequent travellers, including students, patients, officials, entrepreneurs and tourists. "Silchar is not just a city in Assam — it's a strategic gateway to neighbouring states like Mizoram, Tripura, and parts of Meghalaya," the MP said. "In the absence of direct flights, the region suffers a connectivity deficit that affects mobility, economic development, and access to healthcare," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Foods and Natural Strategies That May Support Lower Back Wellness Learn More Undo Suklabaidya urged the civil aviation ministry to take immediate steps under the Centre's UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme to facilitate a direct flight between Silchar and Delhi. "This is not merely about convenience. It is about fairness, accessibility, and integrating the Barak Valley more meaningfully with the rest of the country," he said. He added that such a move would also support the govt's broader goal of strengthening infrastructure and reducing regional imbalances in the northeast.

British Indian hotelier Surinder Arora in race to expand Heathrow Airport

One of Britain's leading Indian-origin hoteliers, Surinder Arora , on Thursday revealed plans to join the race to expand Heathrow Airport with a cost-efficient solution that offers a fully operational third runway by 2035. The Arora Group , behind some of the UK's prominent hotels and luxury resorts, said its "Heathrow West" proposal to the UK government has been developed alongside American civil engineers Bechtel, who have a track record of delivering airport projects globally. Story to Hear Undo "After a decade working with our world leading design and delivery team, I am very proud that the Arora Group can finally unveil to the UK government our Heathrow West proposal , which directly meets and supports the United Kingdom's primary objective of unlocking economic growth at the UK's only hub airport, with a strong commitment of doing so on-budget and on-time," said Arora. "We are delighted that the government has taken a common-sense approach to invite proposals from all interested parties for the very first time rather than granting exclusivity to the current airport operator, no matter its track record. I want the UK to succeed... Our project will generate employment and skills training opportunities across every region of the UK." Live Events The billionaire tycoon claimed that his plans incorporate simpler and less disruptive construction, enabling earlier delivery of new terminal capacity and avoiding the major disruption of building over the M25 highway. "Heathrow West will have a board that comprises members with proven track records in governance, finance, construction, aviation and sustainability. Furthermore, Heathrow West will be committed to working with airlines to adapt its design to ensure it provides value for money and operational resilience while promoting technological innovation," said Carlton Brown, CEO of Heathrow West. "Ultimately, I want to see Heathrow help Britain become the best-connected nation in the world and facilitate the trade and inward investment our UK economy needs in order to compete with the rest of the world. There is no reason as to why the UK's only hub cannot outcompete not just its European rivals, but also Dubai, Singapore and others." The company said building a shorter 2,800-metre third runway, instead of the full-length 3,500-metre runway planned by the airport, would result in "reduced risk" and avoid "spiralling cost". With a shorter runway, efficient construction programme, fewer dependencies and a clear path to site mobilisation, the evidence provided in the submission strongly suggests that this scheme, and the new runway in particular, can be delivered in the target timeframe of 10 years while offering a more acceptable and cost-effective solution, the property and retail group said. The plan by the British Indian hotel magnate includes building a new terminal, which would open in two phases in 2036 and 2040. Locally to Heathrow in west London, the Arora Group properties include the Hilton Garden Inn London, Holiday Inn Express Heathrow T4 and Sofitel London Heathrow T5. Its portfolio also includes the Fairmont Windsor Park, InterContinental London - The O2, and Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf & Spa - which served as host during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to the UK last week. UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is set to review the Airports National Policy Statement, which provides the basis for decision-making on the Heathrow expansion, the government's agenda to meet the ever-increasing air traffic demands at Britain's largest international airport.
