Violet Affleck argued with mom Jennifer Garner over California wild fires

Perth Now21-05-2025

Violet Affleck was stuck in a hotel room arguing with her mother Jennifer Garner during the California wild fires.
The 19-year-old student opened up about her family's experience of the disaster in an essay written for Yale University's student-run Yale Global Health Review in which Violent revealed her mother was "astonished" by the destruction in the family's neighbourhood of Pacific Palisades back in January.
She wrote: "I spent the January fires in Los Angeles arguing with my mother in a hotel room. She was shell-shocked, astonished at the scale of destruction in the neighborhood where she raised myself and my siblings.
"I was surprised at her surprise: as a lifelong Angelena and climate-literate member of generation Z, my question had not been whether the Palisades would burn but when.
"As I chatted with adults in the hotel where we'd gone to escape the smoke, though, I found my position to be an uncommon one: people spoke of how long rebuilding would take, how much it would cost, and how tragically odd the whole situation had been.
"The crisis was acute, a burst of bad luck. It had come from a combination of high winds and low rains ... "
Violet went on to reveal her younger brother Samuel couldn't understand how climate change could have played a part in the disaster, adding: "What, my little brother asked, did global warming have to do with the speed of the wind?"
She added: "Hopefully, most of us understand the climate crisis better than my little brother."
The teenager is a student at Davenport College and previously spoke out in favour of using face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19 during a passionate speech at a Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting last July.
During her appearance at the meeting, Violet also made a passionate plea for long COVID to be taken seriously - asking for face masks to be worn in public buildings and for increased availability of testing and treatment.
She introduced herself as Violet Affleck, Los Angeles resident, first-time voter and 18."
She went on: "I contracted a post-viral condition in 2019. I'm OK now, but I saw first-hand that medicine does not always have answers to the consequences of even minor viruses. The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown that into sharper relief.
"One in 10 infections leads to long COVID, which is a devastating neurological [and] cardiovascular illness that can take away people's ability to work, move, see, and even think."
She added: "To confront the long COVID crisis, I demand mask availability, air filtration and far-UVC light in government facilities, including jails and detention centres, and mask mandates in county medical facilities.
"We must expand the availability of high-quality free tests and treatment and, most importantly, the county must oppose mask bans for any reason.
"They do not keep us safer, they make vulnerable members of our community less safe and make everyone less able to participate in Los Angeles together. Thank you."
Violet is the eldest daughter of Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, who divorced in 2018. The former couple are also parents to younger children Seraphina and Samuel.

Lizzie McGuire star thinks Disney Plus reboot suffered with 'bad timing'

Lizzie McGuire star Jake Thomas thinks the cancelled reboot was hurt by "bad timing". The 35-year-old actor was set to return as Matt - the on-screen brother of Hilary Duff's titular character - in a planned Disney revival of the hit sitcom, but the sequel series was scrapped five years ago. He told E! News: "We actually filmed two episodes of the reboot, but unfortunately it fell apart. "Sometimes that just happens. It was bad timing with everything. It was right at the beginning of COVID. "It just kinda fell apart. And I was really excited to see where Matt was gonna be today, and more importantly for audiences to see that." Pondering what Matt and Lizzie's sibling bond would be like today, he insisted it would be "much the same". He explained: "They still loved each other, at the end of the day, they just didn't like to show it. "I think it would be that - but maybe they're kinda helping each other deal with the big adult issues of the day. "You can be sure Matt would defintely take the cheapshots when he can, the low-hanging fruit." Jake also hopes he and the fans won't have to wait too long to see the characters on screen together again. Asked about working with Hilary in the future, he said: "I'll never say never. "We went, what, like 17 years between a movie and a reboot? We'll see! [laughs] "Hopefully not another 17 years!" Hilary previously revealed how creative differences caused the Disney+ revival to be scrapped, but she remained hopeful. During an appearance on 'Watch What Happens Live', when a viewer asked her if she would agree to another reboot of the show she said: "Of course! Disney+ was very new and I think they were figuring out we were figuring out our...I'm optimistic!" When she announced the decision to cancel the reboot, Hilary noted that had been an "honour" to play Lizzie but insisted she would want any revival series to be an "honest" representation of her signature character. At the time, she wrote on Instagram: "I know the efforts and conversations have been everything trying to make a reboot work, but sadly [and] despite everyone's best efforts, it isn't going to happen. "I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It's what the character deserves. "We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her. "I'm very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn't align. Hey now, this is what 2020's made of. (sic)"

Sydney Sweeney has a new 'bestie'

Sydney Sweeney's new "bestie" is a horse named Moose. The 27-year-old actress has been filming Echo Valley and during her breaks from shooting her scenes in the thriller, she enjoyed hanging out with the animals on set, and took a particular shine to one of them. She told Extra: 'Every time between scenes, because I had more downtime, of course, they had all the horses in the stalls, and I'd go over and there was this one horse in particular named Moose that I just hung out with and we became besties. I wanted to take Moose home." In Echo Valley, Julianne Moore plays Sudney's mother and they found it "so easy" to work together. Julianne said: "Sydney's so terrific, she's so available, she's so professional, she's so talented, and we just had a really good time, you know, building the relationship and being with each other, and I think we're aware of how important this relationship is, the mother-daughter bond, and how much it can hold, how elastic it is, and how far you can push it with each other. "It can be volatile, especially when kids are younger, when girls are teenagers and you realise they've had this tremendous history. "But it was fun. I think we were able to match each other's energy, and we really enjoyed each other's company, and it worked." Sydney added: "Everyone had always told me you are the kindest person they've ever met, and it's true, like, absolutely beyond kind and generous and thoughtful and just present for everyone on set." Julianne, 64, was gripped by the script from the minute she read it. She said: "I remember when I read it, because I was sick in bed with COVID and I was kind of going through scripts, and I was like, 'This is extraordinary!'... All the human drama was there, but then there's this incredible twist. It satisfies my need for, like, domestic, dramatic situations and the scary thriller part. I was really surprised by it, just blown away." Meanwhile, Sydney teased the long-awaited upcoming third season of Euphoria and promised fans won't be disappointed. She said: "I can't get too into detail about it, but I think people are gonna be really, really happy. "I mean, it's crazy. It's like, you're happy 'cause it's crazy."
