ALISTAIR JOHNSTON has revealed he had to see a psychologist to help him cope in the Old Firm goldfish bowl.
The Celtic right-back moved to Glasgow from Canada in January 2023 and was handed a baptism of fire by Ange Postecoglou, making his debut against RANGERS at Ibrox just days after he arrived in Scotland.

He wasn't given much time to get his bearings in Scotland with fixtures coming thick and fast as he started 19 out of the 25 remaining games - missing four through injury and benched for wins against Hearts and Kilmarnock.
The Canadian, 26, still managed to hit the ground running in the SPFL, though, and quickly became a fan favourite at Parkhead as he finished the season without being on the losing side.
Not many players have had such an impact so early in their Celtic careers - especially after moving thousands of miles to a new home across the globe.
But Johnston has admitted that he struggled to stick with the same tempo and fire in his second season after learning just how much pressure was on his shoulders.
He lived in the West End of Glasgow for the first few months but had to move out when the stress of being a celebrity in the city started taking its tole on his performances and mental health.
Asked about the pressure that comes with playing for Celtic, Johnston told One Soccer: 'It's something that I actually learned as I got to Celtic. It was something that you hear about, you know, it's a fishbowl, all these different things.
'You never really truly feel it or can understand or grasp it until you're actually living it.
"So, I think through about the first six months to a year, I just kind of was taking everything in. And after that, it started to weigh on me.
'I could tell performances were lagging a little bit and I just felt like I was a little overwhelmed.
"That's when I actually started speaking to a sports psychologist and they really helped me with understanding, okay, yeah, being out in public in Glasgow is really difficult. It's taxing and understanding that.

'And don't feel like you need to constantly put on a face, but understand that, okay, that is when you leave your front door, it's gonna be like that. So, you need to have alternate ways to just completely decompress.
"That's when I decided I was gonna move from a flat in the West End and move out and get a house with a private garden and everything, so that we could have the dog running about and just have a bit more privacy.
'And that's something that I learned is that it was those smaller sacrifices, kind of things like that, that made a big difference for me.
"Having your own personal space and just finding ways to get away from it. And again, I'm only famous in a 20-mile radius of Glasgow.'

New Rangers loan star Max Aarons vows to repay Russell Martin for taking him under his wing at Norwich City

Max Aarons plans to use his time at Rangers to repay the debt of gratitude he owes Russell Martin for getting his career up and running. The 25-year-old full-back was an emerging talent at Norwich City when the current Ibrox boss and his right-hand man Matt Gill were mainstays in the team Carrow Road. Having been taken under their wings, Aarons progressed and went on to join Bournemouth in a £7million deal two years ago. On the back of a six-month loan deal at Valencia last season, he has now agreed to move to Ibrox under Martin for the coming season. Determined to demonstrate to his manager exactly the kind of player he's become, he said: 'When I was coming through at Norwich, Russ and Gilly were both huge in my development. 'They gave me little bits of advice and help along the way. Those two believed in me and initially, I believe, kick-started my career at such a young age. They were huge in that. 'That was very important for me having a relationship with a coach. Knowing how they work is huge for any player. 'That was massive (in moving to Rangers) alongside the size of this club. I think everything just matched up perfectly. 'Hopefully, now we can build and have a really, really strong season.' Aarons joins fellow new boy Lyall Cameron at the club as Martin's new-look squad starts to take shape. The former England Under-21s player will challenge captain James Tavernier for a starting place in the absence of the injured Dujon Sterling. And he feels Rangers fans should be excited about seeing him in a Light Blue jersey. 'I can't wait to get going,' said the Londoner, who agreed the move amid interest from the English Premier League and Championship. 'I've got a lot of experience in different leagues and I have played a lot of games. The Bournemouth full-back signs on the dotted line as Rangers confirm his loan deal 'I think I can bring that experience, I can bring a new energy and I think Rangers fans can be excited. I am really looking forward to it.' The player feels the pressure of delivering at a club of Rangers' size will bring out the best in him. 'I was speaking with one of my family members last night and I actually said that the pressure of playing for a club of this size is something that really excites me,' he said. 'It was the main thing in coming here. I feel like I play my best when I have that. It's a huge club and you realise that when you walk through the doors. I can't wait to get going.' Aware that there was a possibility of joining Rangers a few weeks ago, Aarons curtailed his summer plans. 'As soon as I'd broken up from the loan at Valencia, I had a few weeks away,' he added. 'But as soon as I knew the move here could be coming about, I knew all the boys were back in a little bit earlier than what was planned at Bournemouth. 'So, I stepped up the training even though I was on holiday. So, I've come in, fit and ready to go. 'It's about getting fitter now as quickly as possible and getting ready for that first qualifying game and for the season. It's time to step everything up, get to know my team-mates and the club.' Aarons might well have worked under Martin sooner, but Southampton had a £6m bid to Bournemouth for his services rejected when the new Rangers head coach was in charge at St Mary's last July. Having remained at Bournemouth, he went to Spain on loan and made four appearances for the side who finished 12th in La Liga. Martin was delighted to get the chance to work again with the former Canaries kid. 'Max is a player who I have always kept a keen eye on since he was emerging while I was coming to the end of my time at Norwich as a player,' Martin said. 'He is a wonderfully talented player who is hungry to develop, improve and help deliver success for his side. I believe he will be a fantastic addition to the squad.' It's understood that Rangers don't have an option-to-buy clause built into the loan deal. The club are still locked in talks with Leicester defender Conor Coady about a move to Glasgow. Peterborough defender Emmanuel Fernandez is also on the radar, although Posh winger Kwame Poku is said to be leaning towards a move to Queens Park Rangers.

Max Aarons' first Rangers words as fans told 'be excited'

After a £7 million move to the Cherries, he eventually fell out of the picture and spent the second part of last season on loan at La Liga side Valencia. He will now spend the upcoming campaign in Scotland with the Ibrox side. The 25-year-old has been taken by the magnitude of the club since his arrival and aims to excite the large fan base. "Delighted to be here," he said. "It's a huge club and you realise that when you walk through the doors, so delighted to be here and can't wait to get going." Asked what he will bring to the team, he went on: "I think I've got a lot of experience now. Different leagues and I've played a lot of games so hopefully that experience, a new energy and Rangers fans can be excited to be honest, I'm really looking forward to it." Aarons had other options on the table from clubs down south but made the choice to head to the Light Blues for the season. He says his decision was two-fold - the pull of Rangers but also the chance to get to work with Martin. 🎙️ Watch our exclusive first interview with Max Aarons as he spoke to @RangersTV after joining the club. — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) June 25, 2025 He told Rangers TV: "I think as soon as you know a club like this, the size of this club, is interested, I think it's always going to be at the forefront of your mind. "As soon as I knew Rangers were interested and linking up with the manager here, knowing what this club is capable of as well was huge for me." Asked how big a factor Martin and his assistant Matt Gill were in his decision, Aarons said: "They were huge. I think first and foremost the size of the club was the main thing. "And Russell when I was coming through at Norwich, Gilly as well, were both huge in my development. "Little bits of advice and help along the way and those two believing in me initially, I believe, kickstarted my career at such a young age. "They were huge in that and hopefully we can build on that and have a really, really strong season. "That was very important for me, having that relationship with a coach and knowing how they work is huge for any player." Despite spending almost his entire career down south, the former England under-21s star is not ignorant to Scottish football. He says he has watched games, and in particular the Old Firm derby. He added: "I've obviously watched it over the years, especially obviously the Old Firm games. "Any game with Rangers involved is a huge game. Honestly, I can't wait to take in Ibrox and the fans. "The whole thing, walking through the door here I definitely felt the weight of the shirt and how much it means to everyone. "I was speaking with a family member and I said 'that pressure of playing for a club of this size really excites me'. I feel like I play my best when I have that."
