LOS ANGELES - Jake Paul acknowledged his upcoming fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will be a step up from his previous opponents but the former Disney star said on Wednesday he would embarrass the Mexican in the ring and make him quit.
Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) has mainly boxed mixed martial arts fighters and a 58-year-old over Mike Tyson since making the switch from YouTube influencer to professional boxing.
His fight with former heavyweight champion Tyson last November was streamed live on Netflix and while it was a huge letdown for fans it drew an audience of some 60 million households worldwide, according to the company.
"This is his toughest fight to date, and I'm going to embarrass him and make him quit like he always does," Paul said of Chavez Jr. (54-6-1, 34 KOs), who last held a major world title in 2012.
"This guy is a great fighter, and I want to test myself against the best in the world."
Chavez Jr. said he feels "refreshed and renewed" heading into the June 28 bout at Honda Center in Anaheim, California and aimed a dig at Paul's record.
"Jake is crazy. I think he's overrated. He hasn't fought anybody in his life. On June 28th, he's going to see what's up," he added at the press conference at Avalon in Hollywood.
The 39-year-old's father, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., said he had never seen his son train as hard or be as focused for the upcoming fight.
"With all due respect to Jake Paul, there is no way that Jake Paul can beat my son," said Chavez Sr., who won world titles at three different weights and is one of Mexico's most revered boxers.
Paul is likely to face his most hostile environment yet in the ring, with many at the press conference confident that fans of Chavez Jr. would be out in full force to support the Mexican.
Mark Solis of San Dimas, California said he wanted to see Chavez Jr. knock out the American.
"I am not a fan of Jake Paul. I think he's fake," said Solis.
"True boxing is, you're warriors. You're going to go out there to battle. And that is what Julio Jr. is going to do."
Gabriel Northway described Paul as a "disruptor" and anticipates another victory for the 'Problem Child'.
"Not that it'll maybe easy, but I think Jake has what it takes to get the win," he added.
Sports marketing analyst Bob Dorfman said Paul's love-him-or-hate-him quality is part of his appeal.
"People still love boxing, and they still love him," he said.
"And a lot of people may watch just to hope he loses. You've got people who are fans and people who are kind of anti-fans and want to see him get his comeuppance.
"So in that sense, it'll be a big draw." REUTERS

McIntosh became the first swimmer to break three different individual long-course world records in one meet since American Michael Phelps at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when she achieved the feat at this week's Canadian swimming trials. The 18-year-old, who headlines Canada's 28-member team named on June 12 for the World Championships in Singapore in July, believes she can go even faster. 'I can go over with my coach and see where to make improvements and really just use this as motivation and validation for my training so far,' McIntosh said. 'Just keep pushing and moving forward and work even harder.' In a stunning statement ahead of the worlds, the triple Olympic champion continued her record-breaking over a glorious five days in Victoria, shattering world marks in the 400 metres freestyle plus the 200m and 400m individual medleys. In addition to her three world records, she set five Canadian marks, came within two seconds of Katie Ledecky's 800m freestyle world record set in May and clocked the fastest 200m butterfly time since super suits were banned in 2010. Moments after completing her hat-trick with the 400m IM on June 11, she made a beeline for fellow Canadian swimming great Penny Oleksiak, who once described McIntosh as 'all gas, no brakes'. Oleksiak, Canada's most decorated Olympian with seven medals, lifted McIntosh off her feet in a huge embrace. Then, as she had done all week, McIntosh gave her gold medal away to an awestruck young fan in the stands. She did not compete on the last day of the meet on June 12, withdrawing from the 200m freestyle. Instead, she posed for photos and chatted with the large gathering of fans outside Saanich Commonwealth Place. 'What a week Victoria! Had so much fun in the pool this week,' McIntosh wrote on Instagram. The swimmer, who raced at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 as a 14-year-old, credited coach Fred Vergnoux – with whom she has been training in Antibes, France since January – for 'the best meet of my career'. '(Vergnoux) has been absolutely amazing throughout this whole journey these past few months,' McIntosh told the CBC. 'He's really taken me to the next level in the sport and pushed me farther. I've gone way faster than I ever could have imagined. 'So props to him, he's done absolutely amazing with me. And we've only known each other for so long, so I feel that connection so quickly.' McIntosh's mother Jill Horstead swam for Canada at the 1984 Olympics while her 20-year-old sister Brooke competed for Canada in pairs figure skating before switching allegiance to Spain, winning the Spanish national championships with partner Marco Zandron. They recently split. McIntosh is expected to compete in five individual events at the World Championships, which begin on July 14 with open water events before shifting to the pool on July 26. She could continue her assault on the record books, as Phelps is the only swimmer to win five gold medals in a single worlds (2007). Raducanu not satisfied with level at Queen's after quarter-final exit
Emma Raducanu said she was not too pleased with the level she displayed in her 6-2 6-4 defeat to Zheng Qinwen at the Queen's Club Championships on Friday, but the Briton dismissed any fears of a serious back injury. In an entertaining battle, Raducanu had a few bright moments and secured a double break to go 3-0 up in the second set after taking a medical timeout for a back issue, but she was eventually overpowered by the Chinese world number five. "I've played five matches in a pretty short amount of time. NEW YORK - Ye made a surprise appearance at Sean "Diddy" Combs' criminal trial on Friday (June 13), expressing support for his fellow rapper as he defends against sex trafficking charges. Dressed all in white, Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, arrived at the Manhattan federal courthouse in a Maybach, and entered through a public entrance. Ye nodded when asked by a reporter whether he was there to support Combs. He left the courthouse about 35 minutes later. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and transportation to engage in prostitution, and if convicted could face life in prison. He has been held in a Brooklyn jail since his September arrest. Ye has also faced controversy for antisemitic and pro-Nazi remarks, prompting businesses such as Adidas to sever ties. Friday's testimony included an appearance by Jonathan Perez, who had been a personal assistant to Combs for three years, as a prosecution witness. Perez said he helped set up sex sessions for Combs, referring to them as "king nights." Other witnesses have called those sessions "Freak Offs" and "hotel nights." He also said getting drugs for Combs was part of the job, and he ensured a Gucci pouch containing cocaine, Adderall and other drugs was in Combs' backpack when the rapper travelled. Under cross-examination from Combs' lawyer Brian Steel, Perez said he never thought a former Combs girlfriend, who testified for six days under the pseudonym Jane and complained of abuse, resisted participating in the sex sessions. Earlier on Friday, a Homeland Security special agent testified about firearms and other items that law enforcement found in a March 2024 raid of Combs' Los Angeles home. After jurors were dismissed for the day, US District Judge Arun Subramanian, who oversees the trial, said he plans to dismiss one of the 12 jurors for making inconsistent statements about his residence, and replace him with an alternate. Subramanian said the inconsistencies gave him "worry about deception and lying," and whether the juror might be unable to follow instructions. Combs' lawyers expressed concern about the dismissal, and the court is further discussing the matter. During an earlier trial break outside the jury's presence, prosecutor Maurene Comey renewed her complaint first made last week about Combs' "nodding emphatically" at times about testimony he agreed with, on concern it might influence jurors. Steel denied that Combs' conduct was improper. The judge said he would try to watch for inappropriate gestures, but that it was normal to react to testimony and "impossible to police" everyone. Prosecutors are expected to continue their case next week, after which Combs' legal team can begin his defence. Also known in his career as Puff Daddy and P.
