Midwest Honor Flight returning tonight
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — More than 80 local veterans are due back in Sioux City around 8:30 p.m. after spending the day in the nation's capital, where they saw memorials built in their honor.
The end of Mission 26 of Midwest Honor Flight completes a multi-year effort to have veterans depart from Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City.
Community-wide fundraising has been ongoing, helping to make this dream a reality.
Siouxlanders helped Midwest Honor Flight raise nearly $200K to pay for this trip. This was the nonprofit's first flight out of Sioux City since 2010.

Veterans, including Michael Simoni, who served in the army during the Vietnam War, were looking forward to what was expected to be a welcoming experience. This welcoming experience is different from how he was welcomed home after the vietnam war.
'It means an awful lot. It was different when we came home from Vietnam. We flew into California, and there were a lot of protests. Truthfully, this is an honor. There are a lot of veterans here. It's an honor to be with them,' said Simoni. Simoni is traveling with his son, who is also a veteran.
The veterans will return to Hawthorn Aviation tonight around 9 p.m. Hawthorne is located just north of Sioux Gateway Airport on Mitchell Street. Everyone is encouraged to come and join in for the 'Operation Welcome Home' ceremony honoring the veterans and capping the emotional day.
Doors at the Hawthorne will be opening at 7:30 p.m. If you are unable to take part in person, KCAU 9 will also live stream Operation Welcome Home on our website.

Disability rights advocates encourage senators to vote against Big, Beautiful, Bill
IOWA (KCAU) — Disability rights advocates joined forces on June 5. They encouraged Iowa senators to vote against the president's so-called 'Big, Beautiful, Bill' due to the ramifications Iowans would face. The group 'Protect Our Care Iowa' said that the bill would cut Medicaid to over 600k Iowans, including 81k people with disabilities. Advocates for the bill say it cuts waste, fraud, and abuse, but the group says it's a way to cut services to the most vulnerable and offer tax cuts to the wealthy. Zach Mecham, medicaid recipient and disability rights advocate, said, 'I know throughout my history of disability advocacy that all of these policies, whether they're aimed at efficiency, or fraud, or abuse, or privatizing healthcare. I know that they all, based on my personal experience, trickle down and harm people like me.' The bill is in the hands of the U.S. Senate. Protect Our Care Iowa speaks out about Big, Beautiful, Bill
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A Sioux City City councilmember is speaking out about President Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act and the proposed Medicaid cuts in the measure. Alex Watters spoke in a 'Protect Our Care Iowa' press conference on Zoom earlier this morning. According to a recent report by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, about 8 million people would lose Medicaid coverage because of added eligibility checks and strict work requirements in the next decade. 'Protect Our Care Iowa' says that 81k of those people face disabilities. Council member Watters says the bill shifts the wealth in the U.S. 'We're asking our elected officials to do what's right. They need to keep these essential services and stop hiding behind excuses of waste, fraud, and abuse. This is just an opportunity to take advantage of those that have little and are working hard, and give it to those that have plenty.'
