Fishing season faces slow start due to heavy rain, labour shortage
Goa's fishing industry is struggling to get fully under way as many boat workers from other states have yet to arrive. Heavy rainfall and persistent rough weather conditions are being blamed for the delayed arrival of labourers, which in turn has limited the number of boats able to venture out to sea.

At fishing jetties like Vasco and Cutbona, only 50-60% of regular operations are functional, while the Malim jetty has seen a mere 10% activity. Many boat owners at Malim are anticipating a slow ramp-up, planning to start full-scale fishing operations only after Sep, especially with Ganesh Chaturthi festivities approaching.
'With only half the workforce here, we can barely manage 50% of our usual fishing trips.
The weather really set us back this season,' said a boat owner from Betim.
The seasonal fishing ban, imposed annually from June 1 to July 31 by Goa govt, restricts fishing activities using mechanical propulsion, trawl nets, and purse seine nets along the seacoast and territorial waters. This mandatory pause aims to allow marine life to replenish.
Following the lifting of the ban, most trawler owners operating from Malim jetty kept their vessels anchored, awaiting better weather conditions and a full workforce.
In contrast, a few boat operators from Betul and Vasco started limited sea ventures with a smaller labour force.
'Despite the challenges, a few of us started venturing into the sea with the limited crew we have, but it's not sustainable for long. Safety is our priority. We strongly advise fishermen not to venture into the sea during the forecasted squally weather to avoid any mishaps,' said another boat owner.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Aug 20 and 21, forecasting heavy rainfall in both North and South Goa districts. The IMD also warned of squally weather conditions along the south Konkan-Goa coasts.
The IMD advisory warns fishermen not to venture into the sea during this period.

Rain in parts of Delhi on Thursday, max temp settles at 34.8 deg C

Konkan Rly intensifies ticket checks ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi
Margao: With the Ganesh Chaturthi approaching and expected passenger traffic surge, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has announced plans to intensify ticket-checking operations across its entire route to ensure smooth travel for authorised passengers. Konkan Railway has been conducting anti-ticketless travel campaigns since the beginning of the current financial year. A KRCL spokesperson said that from April 2025 to date, 3,765 ticket-checking drives have been conducted, resulting in the detection of 40,600 unauthorised travellers, who have been fined Rs 2.4 crore in penalties. 'We appeal to all passengers to kindly travel with valid tickets to avoid any inconvenience,' the spokesperson said. Passengers are advised to purchase tickets before boarding and carry proper identification to avoid penalties and travel disruptions. Five extra special train services to meet festival rush
To cater to the extra rush of passengers during the forthcoming Ganesh Chaturthi, Dasara, Deepavali and Chhath festivals, South Western Railway, Hubballi, has decided to operate special train services from Yesvantpur and Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal Bengaluru towards various destinations. These services will help decongest regular trains and provide convenient travel options for festival-bound passengers. Train No 06563 Yesvantpur-Dhanbad Weekly Express Special will run every Saturday from August 23 to December 27, leaving Yesvantpur at 7.30 a.m. and reaching Dhanbad at 11 a.m. on Monday. In the return direction, Train No 06564 Dhanbad-Yesvantpur Weekly Express Special will run every Monday from August 25 to December 29, leaving Dhanbad at 8.45 p.m. and arriving at Yesvantpur at 9.30 p.m. on Wednesday. Both trains will make 19 trips in each direction. En route, the train will halt at Yelahanka, Dharmavaram, Anantapur, Gooty, Dhone, Kurnool City, Mahbubnagar, Kacheguda, Kazipet, Ramagundam, Balharshah, Nagpur, Itarsi, Pipariya, Narsinghpur, Madan Mahal, Katni, Satna, Prayagraj Chheoki, Mirzapur, Pt.
