Shubman Gill Backs 'Good Mix Of Experience & Talent' To Do Well In England

Shubman Gill, who will lead Team India in the upcoming five-match Test series against England, has backed his boys to do well and end India's 18-year-long wait for a Test series win in England. India, which failed to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final, last tasted success in England in 2007 when the Rahul Dravid-led side defeated England with a scoreline of 1-0 in a three-match series.
In the upcoming series, India will miss the services of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who retired from Test cricket last month. According to Gill, it will be difficult to replace the duo, but the 18-member squad picked for the first series of the WTC 2025-27 cycle has a good mix of experience and talent, and he has full belief that his teammates will do well.
'Pressure is there on you in every tour as a team to win. Definitely two players (Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli) who have played for us for a long time and won multiple matches over the years are not there. It is very difficult to fill in their place, but as such, there is no different pressure this time. There is pressure on us in every series we play, and in every series we are used to of how to play under pressure and win," Gill said during the presser.
'Two experienced players are not there, but the batting and bowling combination that we are going with has a good mix of experience and talent."
'Always under pressure'
India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir, was also asked if he is feeling any pressure after India lost the last two Test series, and he said he is always under pressure as India coach, and this series is no different.
'I am always under pressure, irrespective of whether we got the results or not. If you had asked me this question after New Zealand (series), I would have said, 'Yes, I am under pressure.' After Australia (tour), I would have said, 'Yes, I am under pressure,' " he said.
'After the Champions Trophy, I am still under pressure because, being the coach, you always want the results. Every game you are part of this team; you want to get the results," Gambhir added.

'Whether that's KL (Rahul) or Karun (Nair) at No.3, and then Shubman might end up being that No.4 player, which will probably make life for him a little bit easier as a captain as well.' Ponting believes that opening the batting or playing at no.3 – which had been Gill's designated role in Tests so far – will put pressure on the youngster. 'Not having to be opening or batting at No.3 as a young captain might make it easier. Their top five will probably be Sudarshan, Jaiswal, KL, Gill and Karun Nair for the start of the England series,' said the Aussie great.
