SHEBOYGAN COUNTY – The first day of school is brimming with opportunities for new beginnings.
It can be a chance to show off that perfectly curated outfit or finally rock a new haircut.
Maybe you took a vacation to England over the summer and are trying on a British accent.
Or, maybe, you finally persuaded your parents to get you a new snack for your school lunches.
As families and students check off the school supplies shopping list and adjust to the "school day" bedtime as the start of the 2025-2026 school year approaches, we want to take a look back on memorable first days of school.

Did you dread the end of summer? Were you excited to meet your new teachers? Were you anxious about new assignments and expectations?
My mom was a teacher when I was in school, so invariably back-to-school shopping was a treat. For me, I always loved getting new pencils, specifically Ticonderoga. They had the best erasers, were already sharpened and came in a bright green box. I felt so fancy!
Some years, I'd also get a new backpack that matched whatever I was into at the time. And picking the perfect backpack was a big decision.
I remember for the first day of second grade, I rocked a bob and had a matching blue horse backpack and lunch box. I moved from central to northern Illinois and was new at the elementary school in my area. I can't remember how I felt, but I'm sure I was nervous about making friends and being one of the "new" kids.
With fresh school supplies and a handpicked outfit, anything felt possible on the first day of school.

From Matcha To Earl Grey, These Are The 11 Cosiest Tea Perfumes To Try

Is it just us or is it feeling just a little chillier these days? Autumn is on the horizon, and while there's always room for a fun fruity fragrance and salty scents, tea perfumes are an excellent transitional spritz as they have the magical quality of bringing comfort and warmth on cold days while cutting through hot weather thanks to their cooling facets. Fragrance expert and co-founder Nick Gilbert of British perfume label Eau de Boujee and the fragrance company Olfiction, agrees. 'I'd suggest tea fragrances to anyone who wants a fragrance that is soft and elegant that doesn't impose on others,' he tells ELLE. 'Fragrances that are centred around tea are especially wonderful to wear if you are travelling somewhere warm, as they cut through the humidity and heat and provide a fresh sensation.' Tea-forward fragrances can include a variety of tea notes, from earthy matcha to bergamot-laced Earl Grey and smokey, freshly-brewed black tea. 'There are real tea extracts available to perfumers, such as de-colourised tea essential oil and black tea CO2 extract plus certain botanical materials like yerba mate and rooibos have tea-like characteristics and are also available as natural extracts,' says perfumer Pia Long, who co-founded Eau de Boujee and Olfiction with Gilbert. 'Some fragrance houses offer tea "bases", mini formulas created to evoke or replicate a type of smell,' adds Long. According to her, perfumery is essentially an act of creating something new out of something existing. 'Perfumers can look up the chemistry of different tea varieties, or take the road of total fantasy and construct their own accords,' she says, name checking Jean Claude Ellena's Eau Parfumée Thé Blanc for Bulgari as a seminal tea scent. Similar to vanilla fragrances and oud scents, tea notes can go in different directions, it can feel airy and fresh when paired with softer florals and musks, citrusy bright or add balance to creamier compositions. Santal 33 and Another 13 maybe the fan favourites, but don't sleep on Thé Matcha 26. Instead of leaning into the bitterness of matcha, this fragrance opens with the same kind of uplifting energy one gets from that first hit of matcha latte. It captures the bright green hue of high quality matcha powder and as the day goes, it turns into a softer, plusher scent of figs balanced with dry cedar. A mood-lifting, refreshing splash of fragrance in done in the most elegant way possible. Thé Vert feels like a tall drink of citrus-infused iced green tea on a hot day. It's sparkling and zesty without any sharp tartness, with a clean, breezy feel to it. Fragrance expert Nick Gilbert is a fan. 'It's soft and fuzzy, steamy and bright, and smells like more perfectly like green tea than real green tea does,' he shares. Picture this: you're lying supine on a plush chair in a dimly-lit lounge area of an upscale spa, cucumber slices on your eyes, string quartet playing softly through the speakers and you're shielded behind a sheer curtain sipping tea after a massage. This is the kind of tranquility Earl Grey & Cucumber offers. It opens with a bright waft of smokey bergamot from the Earl Grey with a splash of creamy milk, balanced with green, dewy cucumbers. It's light, fresh and is understated enough for the office. It is a cologne, so the longevity is shorter. Spritz generously, or carry a smaller 30ml version with you. Escentric Molecules make straightforward fragrances that sit close on the skin; the kind of quiet luxury scent that makes others ask 'what's that nice smell'? The M+ Black Tea version features a gentle waft of smokiness on a clean, woody base (a bit like burying your nose in pristine white paper). It's simple, elegant, and one of the more realistic black tea scents out there. 'I wanted to reference the Mad Hatter's tea party,' says perfumer Pia Long of this pleasantly bright fragrance that's vibrating with tart rhubarb and jammy roses. 'I used black tea CO2 extract for its recognisable tannin character with honeyed tonalities,' she shares. If your cuppa of choice is usually a fruity blend (or if you're still in the mood for sunny, upbeat fragrances), this will do the trick. Jasmine fragrances have a reputation for being heady and opulent, but under the discerning nose of perfumer Alexandra Monet, delicate white petals take on a more ethereal appeal. A Floral Verse is soft, musky and refined; a captivating spritz that whispers rather than shouts. Matcha purists will know that true ceremonial-grade matcha has an earthy bitterness to it; an acquired taste that is irresistible once you understand it. Matcha Meditation is a respectful ode to the sacred tea ceremony, a cooling, earthy composition that opens with a hint of bitter green leaves before settling to a cosy, creamy waft thanks to the addition of white chocolate. This enigmatic composition combines smokey black tea with swirls of sweet and spicy incense. It's opulent and long-lasting, perfect for cool winter evenings and parties that last well past midnight. It might not be books-by-the-fireside season just yet, but Jil Sander captures that warm, cosy feeling perfectly. This is the scent of freshly-brewed tea with a sprinkle of cinnamon, enjoyed in a cocooning cabin by the forest. Most tea-forward scents tend to feel airy and fresh, thus offering shorter longevity compared to an amber or oud perfume. This one by the Merchant of Venice, however, promises to linger for hours on end. It's a perfect balance between warm spices, shimmering citrus and gentle florals; a reassuring, mood-brightening blend that manages cool down the senses in hot weather while offering a cosy embrace in colder months. If a clean, minimalist tea scent isn't for you, Virere's bohemian, free-spirited vibe might just be the one. There's plenty of heat here, which captures the feeling of basking in sunshine, surrounded by ripened figs and woody trees. Polished Rock Is the Nostalgic Aesthetic Taking Over 2025

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. At a certain point over the last half-decade, online attitudes shifted from futuristic to nostalgic, taking personal style along with them. The year 2020 saw the resurgence of McBling and Y2K, which coincided with the explosion of TikTok, sending fashion aesthetics into digital hyperdrive. From there, microtrends took on a life of their own, ultimately leading to intense trend fatigue and the rise (and fall) of quiet luxury. Now, as we come out of the sweeping haze of cashmere cardigans and wide-legged trousers, fashion is once again experimenting with measured extravagance, blending late-20th-century power dressing with the flippant attitude of 2010s grunge and presenting us with a new hybrid. Call it 'polished rock.' It's the result of two phenomena converging: continued nostalgia, on the part of brands and fans alike, for It items of runways past; and a gradual rebuttal of the quiet-luxury-induced quest for aesthetic perfection. 'Younger people [are] obsessed with what they see on social media. And a lot of social media fashion content right now is about the past,' says fashion writer and author Kristen Bateman. Hints of this retromania have emerged of late—Chemena Kamali debuted an updated Paddington bag for Chloé's fall 2025 collection, while Saint Laurent returned to its '80s archive of decadent lace and gold accessories. Isabel Marant artistic director Kim Bekker wanted a reset this season, opting for a tousled but composed look that oozed subtle sexiness. For fall 2025, she turned to British rock bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, as well as Marant herself, for inspiration, leaning into the clash between tailored silhouettes and an IDGAF attitude. A lace blouse paired with a masculine coat evoked this ideal of what she calls 'something very delicate and romantic, with something tough over it.' Achieving the look relies on a balance of gloss and intentional undone-ness. Think a plain white T-shirt and an embellished designer leather jacket, or statement patterned tights with the perfect blowout. Womenswear borrowing from traditionally masculine silhouettes, while far from its original '80s storming-the-C-suite context, feels transgressive once again, says Francesca Granata, associate professor of fashion studies at the Parsons School of Design. Take Vaquera's fall 2025 collection: Much like in the '80s, bigger was better, whether it was off-kilter hats, gigantic pearly accessories, shelf-like shoulders, poufy gowns, or tattered suits. 'This return to [a traditional idea] of womanhood, which we never thought we were going to see again in our lifetime, is being pushed on social media,' Granata says. 'So all of a sudden, these masculine, broad-shouldered silhouettes are going against the grain.' Unlike its late-aughts predecessor indie sleaze, this revival can't help but be more refined and less scrappy-DIY, rebel roots be damned. Mary-Kate Olsen's wine-stained Balenciaga Le City bag might drive nostalgic fans to re-create the look (just probably without the stain). 'When I was younger, I idolized Audrey Kitching—her pink hair and messy eyeliner. But today, I feel like that can't exist, because everything is so curated for social media,' Bateman says. 'I don't know that we would ever experience a real rock 'n' roll culture again, so I think that's why there's a fascination with it.' If designers like Zandra Rhodes, who dressed both rock stars and royalty, helped commercialize countercultural aesthetics, the result of that commingling is finally here. If a single designer could sum up the concept, it would be Hedi Slimane, who in his prior roles as creative director of Dior Homme, Saint Laurent, and Celine had a heavy hand in pioneering glamorous grunge. Slimane has long been captivated by younger generations, even inspiring a movement of so-called Hedi boys who embrace his androgynous rock style. But however deeply Slimane may understand youth culture, his designs also fit squarely in the luxury realm, thanks to their streamlined tailoring and luxe materials. For example, in spring 2021, he staged a runway show for Celine inspired by TikTok Eboys titled 'The Dancing Kid,' long before the industry fully embraced the app. This is the tempered maximalism we saw creep back in on the fall 2025 runways. And the kids are buying into it: 'I know people saving up to buy a $5,000 Celine jacket—they'll sleep in that jacket,' jokes London designer Aaron Esh. For independent designers like Esh who've been operating on the outskirts of the trend cycle, it feels like the post-TikTok fashion conversation is finally catching up. After three runway shows, Esh has carved out a name as the purveyor of grungy yet sleek clothing that is unafraid to contradict itself. He'll pair a tattered baseball cap with an expensively draped dress and a pair of leather thong sandals. The key to that insouciance? Basing many of his looks on people he personally knows, away from the lens of social media trends. 'There's this subconscious, but also conscious, referencing of real people, which makes the fashion authentic,' Esh says. 'The things that we do reference are completely un-rock 'n' roll,' he adds, making note of the timeless luxury found in'50s Cristóbal Balenciaga or Pierre Cardin's cocoon coats. Ironically, both his indifference to trends and his deference to traditional glamour feel in step with the current countercultural attitude. In comparison to the whirlwind personal style cycles of recent years, polished rock feels like it has longevity. It cherry-picks glamorous aspects from numerous eras, allowing fans of each—whether they be boho, punk, or grunge—to craft their own interpretation. 'Especially as we go into the fall, there are so many great staples,' Bateman says. 'Skinny jeans, when worn correctly, can actually be really great.'
