Ships leave Halifax for Operation Reassurance
Crews on the HMCS Edmonton and Yellowknife set off from Halifax for 'Operation Reassurance' on Monday.
Two ships left Halifax on Monday morning on a European deployment for Operation Reassurance, which is currently the Canadian Armed Forces' largest overseas mission.
The HMCS Edmonton and Yellowknife will help NATO identify and dispose of sea mines in European waters from July to October, according to the armed forces' website.
There are an estimated 80,000 vintage sea mines left over from the Second World War in the Baltic and North seas.
'It's been a long time for our ships to get prepared to come to this, not only from a technical perspective but also from a training perspective,' said Lieutenant-Commander Jeffrey Smith. 'We are excited to be leaving here this morning for the next four months to sail with our allies.'

New fire erupts in Spaniard's Bay, residents of Brown's Road to evacuate immediately
CBC News has confirmed that a new fire has broken out in Spaniard's Bay on Tuesday afternoon. Residents of Brown's Road are asked to evacuate immediately. People who live on Rectory Avenue, Casey's Lane and Mint Cove Pond Road are under an evacuation alert. Spaniard's Bay Mayor Paul Brazil told CBC the fire began near the Anglican cemetery on Maul Hill, and he observed flames and smoke in the area. The mayor said one water bomber and a helicopter are overhead in the area, and the Spaniard's Bay fire department is on the scene with crews from two neighbouring communities. No information about damage or the cause of the fire is immediately available. Spaniard's Bay is approximately 30 kilometres from the out-of-control Kingston fire in Conception Bay North.
