Brazilian enforcer Patrick set to be heartbeat of Melaka's midfield

The Star3 days ago
PETALING JAYA: Melaka's new midfield enforcer Patrick Gama is ready to throw himself into the thick of Super League action starting with a debut battle against Penang at the Hang Jebat Stadium today.
The 25-year-old Brazilian, a towering figure at 1.85m, arrived from Vietnamese side Viettel after plying his trade with Ji-Parana, ADESG, Santa Helena-GO, Tupynambas and Vilhenense back home.
And when his manager Valdir Sousa called about Melaka's interest, Gama knew he was in for something special.
'Valdir told me about the club's new project, about being A1 Semi-Pro League champions last season,' Gama said.
'That really encouraged me to come and represent this wonderful club,' he said.
'The competition will be at a high level, with difficult games. Coach K. Devan wants a competitive team and I can help tactically with what he asks me to do. I'm here to play and help the team in the competition.'
His first test? A Penang side who finished 10th last season and also reeling from a demoralising 0-3 defeat against Terengganu on Sunday but have a knack for turning games on their head.
Gama has done his homework and is not underestimating the challenge.
'They're a capable team, and it'll be a great game. My expectations are high and positive.
'I want to play, help the team and have a great debut.
'My vision is to win but I respect the opponent. It's 11 against 11 and these games will be decided in the details.'
Melaka have been putting in the hours at training, with Gama slotting in quickly alongside his new teammates.
His debut, he says, is about more than just three points.
'We're determined for the first game. We want to bring joy to the Melaka fans and to the city whose name we carry with pride.'
With his height, strength, and ability to read the game, Gama is set to be the heartbeat of Melaka's midfield.
If he stamps his authority early, Penang could be in for a long night.

Soccer-Forest face busy season with urgent need for reinforcements, Nuno says

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Premier League - West Ham United v Nottingham Forest - London Stadium, London, Britain - May 18, 2025 Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo reacts Action Images via Reuters/Matthew Childs/File Photo (Reuters) -Nottingham Forest are short of options across the pitch and in urgent need of reinforcements for the start of the season, manager Nuno Espirito Santo said on Friday, warning that a lack of depth could hamper their first European campaign since 1996. Forest are set to play in the Europa League, having been promoted in Crystal Palace's place after the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed the London club's appeal against UEFA's decision to demote them to the Conference League. Forest have signed four players -- forwards Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus, defender Jair Cunha and goalkeeper Angus Gunn, who joined on a free transfer from Norwich City. There have been eight departures, including winger Anthony Elanga's move to Newcastle United and Brazilian midfielder Danilo's switch to Botafogo, with Nuno describing his squad as unbalanced ahead of their Premier League opener at home to Brentford on Sunday. "I am concerned. We need players. Especially about the game on Sunday, we are going to play a tough game against a good team and we are short on options to give solutions that the game might need," Nuno told reporters. "What we want is game-by-game to have as many options as possible. The first points are always vital. Europa (League) will come after and for sure it could be better but for now these games until that happens is a major concern." Forest are reported to be on the verge of completing a few signings, but Nuno said the uncertainty has created an atmosphere of unease at the Midlands club. "Dealing with doubts are the worst thing you can have in football. We have doubts, who is going to be, when are they going to come? All these things create doubts. Not only (for) me but in the club," he added. "Nicolas Dominguez is injured, Danilo is not here so we need midfielders, on the wings also. In front we have Igor, Chris (Wood) and (Taiwo Awoniyi) but maybe another body would be good because of the amount of games. "I think we need another option for the goalkeeper situation, on the defensive line full backs. I think we are OK in the centre halves." Minnows UM-Damansara ready to fight tooth and nail with JDT in FA Cup tie

PETALING JAYA: UM-Damansara are stepping into the Southern Tigers' Den on Friday (Aug 15) for an FA cup round of 16 first-leg tie, with most expecting Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) to roar to victory long before the first whistle. But the A1 Semi-Pro League side aren't just going to roll over as they are plotting an unlikely upset. Their preparation included a dress rehearsal of sorts last week against JDT II in league action, a narrow 0-1 defeat that offered both lessons and warnings. Centreback and former national Under-23 defender A. Shivan Pillay knows the challenge ahead and is under no illusion. "We did well against JDT II but the main team is 100 times better," said the 24-year-old, who has featured for Super League sides like Petaling Jaya City, Perak and Selangor. "We've trained hard for this game, focusing on our plan. The goal is simple – keep the scoreline tight and make the most of any chances." UM-Damansara, led by coach Ridzuan Abu Shah, will take inspiration from Negri Sembilan, who stunned JDT by taking a 2-0 lead before eventually falling 3-5 in their Super League clash. "We must defend stronger and hit them on the counter. We've seen how their backline sometimes plays high - there are spaces to exploit," Shivan added. "We have to run for every ball, give every ounce of effort, and hopefully, we can score." Originally slated for UM Arena in Kuala Lumpur, the match was moved to the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium after the Malaysian Football League deemed UM-Damansara's home ground below standard. That means facing JDT not once, but in effect twice on their home turf. Shivan admits the squad have talked about the scale of the challenge and the likelihood of a long night as they prepare to face a star-studded attack featuring Brazilians Bergson Da Silva, Jairo Da Silva and Heberty Fernandes, along with national striker Joao Figueiredo and Malaysia's golden boy Arif Aiman Hanapi. "It's going to be a long game because these are top professionals," Shivan said. "But playing against players like this makes you better. We'll cherish the exposure and do whatever it takes to limit the goals." Ahead of the tie, UM-Damansara received a timely boost with the arrival of winger Sean Gan Giannelli. The 28-year-old, formerly with Kuala Lumpur from 2023 to 2025, was part of the JDT set-up between 2016 and 2019. "Sean has Super League experience and knows what it's like to play for JDT. He'll be key for us, especially on the break," said Shivan.

Selangor FC drawn in all-Asean ACL Two group for 2025/26 season

LAST season's Super League runner-up Selangor FC will compete in an all-Southeast Asian group in the 2025/26 Asian Football Confederation Champions League Two (ACL Two). The Red Giants were drawn into Group G alongside Thailand's Bangkok United, Singapore's Lion City Sailors FC, and Indonesia's Persib Bandung. All four teams in the group hail from the ASEAN region, ensuring a balanced competition with familiar opponents. Selangor manager Mahfizul Rusydin expressed hope that the team can progress beyond the group stage this time. 'We are looking forward to a second consecutive participation in the competition and hope will not exit at the group stage,' he said. 'Our hope is to proceed to the round of 16 where we can meet clubs from the west zone.' Selangor finished third in Group H last season and failed to advance to the knockout rounds. The 2025/26 ACL Two group stage draw also placed Al Nassr, Beijing FC, and Gamba Osaka in separate groups. Group G promises intense regional rivalries as Selangor seeks redemption in continental competition. - Bernama
